Stick a solitary £1.50 order on your van run every week until
they withdraw it. See how long they can maintain that service.

As a physical retail only outlet I am not that concerned with
what Glenway do. Going direct to the public is not allegedly a
new departure for them anyway, they are just doing it with a bit
more guile, so they can be say they are being “honest”. We have
only ever used them on a very limited basis because of this.
Those that decide to give their customers details away for the
sake of a short-term commission payment will commit business
       suicide.
More importantly, in my view, certain other “exclusive” trade
only suppliers need to up the quality of their service
substantially to protect the custom from the likes of us. Having
early cut off times for next day delivery, supplying wrong
items, supplying broken items, the list goes on, is a guarantee
that they too will alienate us. Sometimes you need to look
internally rather then externally as to how you are going to
increase or protect market share. Service improvements coupled
with high integrity and a decent product will ensure success.
Reverting back to the Glenway situation: I would suggest that if
anybody is bothered then un-following them or blocking them
following you on social media platforms may help prevent them
mining those that you have an interest in or at least make a bit
of a point. Clearly if anybody is really pissed off then they
are going to stop buying from them at all! In the meantime we
have ditched their 2018 catalogues that have their WEBSITE
       ADDRESS SPASHED ACROSS THE FRONT!!!
Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

       Hi all,
Re Glenway, not happy at all, been dealing with them over ten
years, spend a lot of money with them and always pay our bills
on time, been in the sports business nearly 50 years.
I'm based in the Manchester area and this is the thin end of the
wedge to coin a phase, although to be fair to them there is
another very large firm within 20 miles of Manchester with three
letters in their name (No names no pack drill) who will supply
anyone who walks through the door, clubs, schoolteachers etc and
       are quite blatant about it.
Definitely not happy, looks like Glenway's competitors will be
getting a lot their business in the future.
       Dan.
Merry Christmas to all on the forum X

If the industry follows the same path then our own local
employees will no longer be needed, our own local customers will
no longer need us. We need and want to retain experienced staff
more than we need greater profit.
Armed with a few thousand Glenway coded stickers in theory we
can now target sports clubs outside of our own area, at random
and without any exposure of our own customer list. Others
outside our catchment area can do the same to us. Who wins
       there?
Perhaps the biggest reason why we won't partake in this scheme
is down to the lost opportunity to upsell when taking an order
be it clearing some old stock, offering a better price on one
line and offsetting the loss against the huge silver plated cup
       sourced from Swatkins etc.,
Finally we don't have any customers that would want to fiddle
around placing their own order for a 2% saving and would suggest
that full sale prices won't cut it in this day and age. Who's
margin will be trimmed first, your's or Glenways?

I take everybodys' comments on board and I have been in the
Trophy business for 30 years and currently deal with Glenway so
this is a legitimate cause for complaint from me. You can't cut
of your nose to spite your face as someone has already said and
yet the idea of a boycott seems reasonable if you feel that your
business is under threat. There is enough loss of retail sales
to the internet already, without your suppliers absconding to
swell the enemy ranks. So what to do...
Well how about a month of action, lets say February 2018.
Every one who wants to protest should boycott Glenway for the
entire month of February. You won't ruin your business with a
month of action, but you will certainly give Glenway a bloody
nose. It will give Tim and crew a pause for thought, they
should not be undermining their principal customer base by
direct sales to end users. February is also a good choice
because it gives plenty of retailers time to question Glenway
face to face at Trophex and bring their answers back to this
forum so that we can all be in a position to make a final
judgement in time to take a boycott action in the following
month. If it does not cause Glenway to think again then perhaps
we could repeat the boycott on a second month during the year,
say April. We can keep that up until they change their policy
or in time it might be possible to make a gradual ship to
another supplier. Certainly it would not be wise to do NOTHING.
So, how about it, do we start the campaign with a February
boycott or not, what say you.....

Interesting points raised and it seems we all have the same
       concerns.
My main concern is that if Glenway get any support with this new
strategy it will show the other wholesalers that trophy
retailers in general are ok with them competing directly with
them in the retail market. If this happens then long standing
trophy retail shops like us will struggle to survive.
I can only see one way to stop the trend and that is we ALL have
to STOP buying and supporting ANY wholesaler who advertises in
retail market NOW. In my opinion the majority of wholesalers
play by the rules with the odd exception so there are enough
good guys to provide a decent enough range and service that our
businesses won’t be affected by dropping a supplier.
With regards to the reason why glenway or any other wholesaler
would go direct is baffling. There is enough retail trophy shop
business out there that if they produce enough good product at
the right price which is backed up with a good service they can
       make a killing.

::) ::) Come on guys if you think that Glenway is the first to
being doing this then perhaps you really do not know what really
goes on in this industry, behind closed doors, trade counters
       etc.
This has been going on for a long time, the companies that are
concerned have been doing it for years, the difference is
Glenway are shouting about it., they have never kept it a secret
that they will deal with every tom dick or harry as it is well
       known.
Glenway are not the first, R ad D went that way years ago, the
difference this time is Glenway are using the internet to there
       advantage.
Don't get me wrong its a disgrace and wrong to be going against
your own customer base, and they only know why they never did it
a different way like setting up a sister company which most
businesses would have done and do in many other industries.
What it actually needs is the biggest clients of theirs to
boycott them at the same time, if they don't Glenway are
laughing at every person and company that uses them, as in ten
years they will have your clients in there pockets.
The internet is bigger than just one company, bad publicity can
reach a bigger audience and quicker, All I would say is don't
make it easy for them by lining there pockets, but remember, if
you think they are the only ones doing it, then you have been
brain washed to think trade means trade as it sure does not.
I tried highlighting this years ago but the main magazine would
not accommodate my editorial in light that they may fall out
       with wholesalers in the industry.
One question I ask is the likes of some of there big national
accounts know what they are doing like Timpsons, Sportsdirect
       and many other.
My advise, market your own company, customer service and your
USP and ban from using them if everyone does this they will find
it harder than they think it really is, I can see Trophex now
all the bedroom sellers viewing Glenway being told they will
earn a lot of money from it and they will be the people who have
       no clue about business.

We started supplying trophies at about the same time Glenway
started, while it's great to see success in a business I hate to
see the greed that is consuming Glenway. This new retail site
is just Glenway sticking two fingers up at the companies who
have stayed with them and made them the company they are today.
They must be mad to think I'll will just pass on my customers to
use their website and not expect Glenway to poach them for any
future business. You may get your 30% off the first order but
that's the last you'll see of that customer.
I can only urge other Trophy shops and businesses to boycott
Glenway straight away and any other so called trade suppliers
       who try the same idea.

Just doing some back of a fag packet calculation here:-
Customer, (Say for arguments sake your local school) comes in
with Glenway catalogue last year and orders from (say) £500
worth of trophies for their sports day.
You would make around £300 profit from the sale if you sold
       everything at catalogue price.
In addition, when the school come in to your shop to pick up the
order, they may see a couple of trophies in your display and say
"Oh, I'll take a couple of those as well...an impulse sale)
In 2018, same school ordering "direct" with your "unique" code,
YOU will receive just £147...............That is 30% of (£500
       less 2%)
       A massive difference.
Then of course, Glenway have this school's address on their
       database for mailshots etc.
I really don't think Glenway have thought this through, it's a
shame because they are a very good firm, with first class
service, but they risk alienating their retailer customer base
who have been loyal for years.
I do hope they will reconsider this silly move, otherwise they
will certainly be losing all (or most of) Dan's business.
