Gluing Glass Trophies

How do the manufacturers glue glass awards together? (and
unglue) For example, say a glass octagon, the main part is glued
to the base.
Where can the items needed be bought?

Graham,
I mount glass plaques using glue that is cured with UV light.
This gives a bond that in theory can be stronger than the glass
ie if you try to break the two pieces apart the glass (top
and/or bottom) can fracture before the join.
The two surfaces need to be very clean and flat. If the vertical
part is very narrow you may need to support it until the glue
starts to grip.
I have never had reason to separate pieces. I'm told a heat gun
is helpful and maybe a rubber mallet but I haven't tested this
at all.
I'm out of the workshop at the moment but will check suppliers
and post again sometime.
Hope this helps.
David

Thanks David, would appreciate the details if you could find
them
We've used the glass glue from Loctite before. Sometimes it's OK
but sometimes not. You can also see where it's been glued.
Could me me of course!

after a quick look on google I found these guys, looks like they
sell the UV activated glass bonding adhesive, they may even have
information on how to 'unglue' something...

Graham,
I use UV-TEK UV-116 adhesive.
HTML http://www.glassparts.co.uk/regalead-range/bevels-and-bevel-applications/uv-and-white-light-adhesives/uv-116-adhesive-lv
I bought a 200g bottle more years ago than I care to remember
and it still seems to be working. I just expose for a tad
longer.
Any adhesive that is squeezed as the two pieces come together
can be removed by a razor blade held FLAT on the surface
although as you do more you will find that you will judge the
amount of adhesive more accurately. You certainly do not want
too much.
You will be surprised how little glue is needed each time as it
spreads out very well.
I apply the glue to the plaque bottom that is being mounted and
usually have registration marks on both the base and top part
for positioning. Although latterly I've just been doing it by
eye. There is a little 'slip' time which allows you to position
correctly until the adhesive grips.
As I mentioned if you're working with 6mm glass you might have
to support the upper piece until the glue takes effect.
I was lucky and had a spare UV cabinet which I use so didn't
have any added expense in this respect.
Maybe check out CR Laurence:

They have a range of adhesives too....
Hope this helps.
