This recipe produces a soap that is great to use as it is. And
it can also be used as an excellent base to make Glycerin,
Transparent, Melt & Pour Soap.
Ingredients:
Coconut Oil (60%):
Coconut oil produces a hard and stable Soap. It's highly
cleansing as it produces rich and creamy foam and lather.
Coconut oil is rich in antibacterial properties. Coconut Oil
Soap can help remove blemish-causing dirt, bacteria and dead
skin. But since that Coconut Oil produces a strong soap, if
Coconut Oil were used alone for making Soap, it will turn out to
be harsh and slightly drying to the skin. This is why other
conditioning oils such as Castor can be included in the formula
with Coconut Oil to produce a more balanced Soap.
Average fatty acid composition of Coconut oil:
Saturated acids:
1- Caproic acid (0.2%)
2- Caprylic acid (8.0%)
3- Capric acid (7.0%)
4- Lauric acid (48.0%)
5- Myristic acid (17.5%)
6- Palmitic acid (8.8%)
7- Stearic acid (2.0%)
Unsaturated acids:
1- Oleic acid (6.0%)
2- Linoleic acid (2.5%).
Castor Oil (30%):

Once turned into Soap, Castor Oil produces very little, soft and
gentle foam. That's why it's good to use along with Coconut Oil
for making Soap. This is because Castor Oil balances any harsh
or drying effect of Coconut Oil Soap. Castor Oil improves blood
circulation. It helps in reducing Acne because of its
antimicrobial (Ricinoleic acid can inhibit growth in the
bacteria that cause acne.) It enhance smoothness and softness of
the skin. It's helpful in restoring uneven skin tones. Castor
oil has a (low comedogenic score), this means it is unlikely to
clog pores in the skin and reduces the risk of developing
blackheads, making it appropriate for use on sensitive skin.
Stearic Acid (10%)
Stearic Acid helps to thicken and harden the other ingredients
to form a solid Soap.
Sample Coconut & Castor Oil (+ Stearic Acid) Recipe Using 1 kilo
of Total Oils:
600 grams Coconut Oil
300 grams Castor Oil
100 grams Stearic Acid
Saponification Value:
600 grams of Coconut Oil needs 110 grams of Naoh dissolved in
240 grams of water to turn into soap.
300 grams of Castor Oil need 90 grams of Naoh dissolved in 130
grams of Water to turn into soap.
100 grams of Stearic Acid need 7 grams of Naoh dissolved in 15
grams of Water to turn into soap.
Total Naoh:
207 grams
Total Water:
385 grams
Stage 1 / Process:
1- Mix the Sodium Hydroxide with the water in a separate Glass,
Plastic or a Stainless-steel container.
2- Place the oils and the Stearic Acid in a Stainless-steel pan
and heat up to 150 Fahrenheit.
3- Turn off the fire, and start pouring the water/lye solution
slowly to the oils mixture.
4- Start stirring the mixture until it becomes hard to stir
anymore.
5- Pour the mixture in a plastic container and leave it to cool
down.
Stage 2/ Process:
Notes:
1- This stage can be done in the following day, or anytime later
on.
2- The purpose of the second stage is to complete the
saponification reaction. Since that this soap is made using a
high percentage of Coconut Oil and Stearic Acid, it would be
difficult to finish the reaction over direct fire. This is
because the mixture can turn into a very hard paste during the
reaction. And it would be difficult to stir it. Also the
reaction of this mixture is very strong, which might cause an
eruption (boils out of the pan)
Method in Stage 2:
1- Prepare a hot-water bath by placing water in a larger pan.
2- Place the soap in a smaller stainless-steel pan, and place it
in the water.
3- Start heating. Avoid reaching boiling point.
4- Continue heating until the mixture binds and turns into a
paste.
5- Stir the mixture occasionally until it becomes hard
6- Before the mixture becomes very hard and difficult to pour -
pour the mixture into a large plastic container (or into molds)
7- Keep the soap in a cool and ventilated place to allow any
remaining Naoh to neutralize.
Notes:
1- You can turn the fire off and have some rest in between and
continue anytime later.
2- During setting the soap, water might come out of soap and
rests in the bottom. This is normal as the soap tends to
neutralize and balance when it's set.
3- If you wish to repeat the hot-water bath, place the settled
water with the soap as it still contain Naoh that is necessary
for completing the reaction.
3- If you wish to speed up the curing time, repeat the hot-water
bath until you become sure that all of the Naoh has reacted to
the oils.
