What is optimum rod length ?
By: Jeremy Schrader Date: May 29, 2018, 3:30 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Had a relaxed session with shaik down at Studd road the other
day and it got me thinking of what is the ideal rod length and
how can we get the most from them ? I have been using my full
length Century T1000 for the past number of months but also was
leaning towards my shorter TT Sport.
At the recent WA state and national titles I got my best
distances on the Sport finding that easier to get moving at
speed for me being only 5'6" tall. so this posses a simple
question what rod lengths have people found produce the best for
them and what height are you ?
Here is the link to the casting with the TTR ?

Good question. I always thought it was much of a muchness move a
short rod quicker or a long rod slower.
However I am finding my best distances were on a shorter rod
       13'2 - 13'6. I am 6ft exactly.
Currently I am using my T1000 at around 13'10-14'. Maybe I am
not casting as well at moment tho so hard to say.
I am planning to get another Zziplex maybe a Full Tournament or
       possibly a TRC.
When I get another shorter rod I will do some back to back
       testing.

Theres def an optimum rod length for everyone within an inch or
       2.
A longer rod is not always better. A 13ft rod will cast much
further than a 9ft rod of similar construction but at what point
do you start losing gains from using a longer rod.

IMO its fairly obvious one is not going to move a 20ft rod fast
enough. U guess its finding the sweetspot which seems to be 13
       to 14'4 or so.
Then again we have to take effective length into consideration
too based on the action and stiffness of the rod.
Wasnt Paul Kerry still managing 290+ yards on a rod under 12ft?
       What are your thoughts Jeremy?

       Steve ,
I am feeling more and more that it is how fast you can get the
lead moving. I understand the physics about a longer rod
allowing a larger arc but the speed at which the caster can get
the lead around that arc needs to be factored in. Longer rods
moved fast add considerable strain on the caster with both spool
grip and load on the body . You have to be in peak form to get
that control. At this stage in my casting career the shorter rod
       is doing it for me.
I will be doing some side by side comparisons in the coming
weeks and will see how it goes.
       Regards

I have two Friends 1.75 tall. One with 4.10 and 4.20 mts rods
(tt) both casting 245 plus. I read once a facebook comment " a
faster lead wont goes out from a slowly rod" so fast is the goal
buddys. Im using at 4.10 all my rod. My two friend you can see
then at the fips this year waldemar Fernández and Juan Pablo
       Peralta. Cheers

Cast looks good Jeremy. Will you stick with the shorter rod for
       a while?

I'm the same height as you Jeremy
       Iv'e always fished with 13'6'' rods,so when i started casting,i
       purchased the T1000 @ 14'10''...didnt like it,so its now 13'6''
       and much easier to use.
But now im thinking id like to use a more softer rod due to
age,and probably still leave the length at 13'6''.

The shorter rod is working better for me and I just shortened
the grip length a little more as well to allow or a faster pull
in with the left. Thsi coming Sunday I will see what I can get
out of her and am hoping the conditions are a bit better than
       our last session.

       Just my thoughts:
I believe the optimum length can be arrived at by:
Holding the rod (normal hand position) directly above one's
head, then (moving only the top hand) place tip on the ground.
Measure the angles at rod tip/ground, bottom hand/rod.
It is my belief these angles should be 45 degrees.
If the angles are not 45 degrees the rod should be shortened/
lengthened (by moving hand position up down the butt) until 45
       degrees is arrived at.
There should be no attempts with the hacksaw, it is unnecessary.
Changing hand position until many trials have been completed is
       sufficient.
