Today was our annual 100g event. This is one of our scheduled
events we hold through out the year. We were able to use the
second field in which is fairly flat and with the forecast wind
coming roughly from the north we set up casting away from the
lane and farmers house - that's a good thing. Unfortunately the
wind failed to rise to the forecast strength of up to 18mph or
so but on the plus side we only got hit by a couple of quick
showers. The casting pretty much went as expected with only one
snap-off. There were six club members in attendance with five
entering the 100g event. We also had the pleasure of Graham
attending as a day caster.

Today we got to use the third field and there was cows in the
flat field. This field is a bit soft so no cars could enter,
therefore we had to pack light and walk, thankfully a north wind
was forecast which meant we could set up close to the gate.
There was only three members in attendance today due to other
commitments and car trouble, hopefully they will be at the next
event. Anyway the forecast wind didn't show up until later in
the day and then it went cross court for a while and brought a
chill with it, but on the plus side it stayed dry for a change.
With fewer member we got more casts in and at the end of the day
we ran out of steam, not as young as we used to be.

Today was the last scheduled event for 2019 - the mighty "Secret
Pairs" event. Usually a fun day as it's held at the end of the
year. It's not usually taken too seriously and usually a good
laugh. Each caster is free to cast whatever weight they want
with the onus on recording your longest cast. At the end of the
event each casters name is drawn out of a hat, or whatever, to
set the team. Then a second name is drawn to make each team.
The longest casts of each team member are added together to give
their combined distance - longest overall distance wins. Today
the winning distance went to Stevie and Tommy - congratulations
to you both! We had six members attend today so we had three
teams all viaing for the win.
With plenty of livestock in most of the fields we ended up in
the top sloping field for this event. With the oche set up and
casting under way it was surprising that nobody managed to smack
the ground around the oche. The forecast said it was to remain
dry for the time we were there and that's how it stayed - but it
was bitterly cold with all and any water frozen. The wind,
whilst not as strong as forecast earlier in the week was blowing
from left to right as it travelled down the court and did its
best to freeze us.
This was also our annual prize giving for the clubs scheduled
events held throughout the 2019 year. Overall club champion for
the 2019 season went to Stevie - well done! There were
individual 1st, 2nd and 3rd place wins for each of the clubs
scheduled events as well.

Today was the last event of the UCC year and indeed of the
decade! Of course it was never going to be well attended but
there were 4 hardy souls (read - sad idiots with nothing better
to do) who did manage to turn up for a chuck or three.
Today was just an end of year gathering as all the formal club
days are now behind us, so it was a day to cast whatever you
wanted and hopefully take advantage of what wind there was. Of
course we did end up in the top field casting across the slope
again but we managed to cast with the court running on a
downhill slant. I think we are getting too used to casting
across the slope in this field as no one hit the ground at the
rear of the oche. Casting across the slope tempered whatever
gain there was from the advantage of casting slightly downhill
but the 10 - 20mph wind was nice to have blowing down the court
and helped with the distances a little i'm sure.
Casting was good today with the rain staying away from us and
there where several personal bests gained for three of us as a
bonus. An interesting day but it remains to be seen if we can
duplicate these results in the new year. Anyway, the Ulster
Casting Club would like to thank all who turned up this year to
support the club and we look forward to seening you all in 2020
- hopefully!

Today was the first event for the UCC in 2020. The forecast was
for a cold but dry day with a predominatley westerly wind
blowing from around 15 to 25mph in gusts. That is what we got
but the windchill factor put the temperature way below the
forecast 3 degrees - but at least it stayed dry with the
exception of one light shower.
We again ended up in the top field casting across the slope but
there wasn't enough room to angle the court to take advantage of
the cross wind so we put up with it. The rain over the last
couple of days had made the ground very soft and the oche became
slippery fairly quickly. Just another problem to contend with
as the day progressed.
Seven members turned up today with 5 casting. As it wasn't a
theme day we were free to cast whatever weights we wanted so
that's what we did.

Just a practice day for the upcoming 175g scheduled event on the
9th of next month. Back in the sloping field today but with a
bitter cross wind reaching up to around 20mph to contend with
which eased a little as the day went on. At least it stayed dry
for us. Congratulations to Tommy on a surprise 175g PB. Not a
favourite weight of his but he managed pull one out today - well
done!

Today was the first of the clubs scheduled weight days, kicking
things off with the 175g. Not a weight liked by many but it is
one of the main core weights we cast so it has it's day just
like the rest of them.
With the storm sweeping over this corner of the world we had our
work cut out for us. The only field we could use was the
sloping top field as the rest had flooding, new ponds / lakes
and standing water enough to drown the farmers sheep dogs! The
wind wasn't particularly cold but it was blowing from the mid
20mph right up to the high 40s and low 50s - straight across the
court. This plus the lack of grip under foot made for a rather
challenging day. It was never going to be a day of big
distances for us as the wind made it hard enough just trying to
keep the weights in court. But Tommy Mawhinney managed to yet
again claw out another personal best on the 175g for the second
event in a row - well done Tommy.
There were 4 casters doing battle today but with the conditions
and weather taking their toll on us the day ended early and we
headed home.

Well today was our first day back in the field since February
and what a day it was. The past two weeks we have had great
summer weather but the casting gods laughed and sent heavy rain
and a strong cross wind. Not to be put off 5 casters turned up
to do battle, some had been training and practicing durning
lockdown others turned up with cobwebs on the rods. With the
wind direction blowing southwest (across the court) and animals
in the other fields we had no choice but to use the sloping
field, which meant an uneven oche and that hampered distances
but we didn't do too badly with a few pbs achieve.

Well today was our TRC event in honour of the late great Terry
Carroll of zziplex fame, it was held later this year due to the
worldwide pandemic. It was a beautiful day with a nice wind
blowing down the court for a change, with the wind going south
we had to set up in the top field but on the flatter section
which meant casting over a rise. The grass was getting long and
due a cut hopefully soon so ground casts where difficult but
that didn't stop some of us. It was a mixture of fortunes for
some with several personal bests achieved while other struggled,
we even had a new Ulster record today on the 125g with a 277yard
cast by Stevie Ratcliffe. The rules are simple you cast all four
core leads one of which you must use the off the ground cast,
which you nominate early, the winner has the best aggregate
distance.

It was a beautiful day the sun was shining and there was hardly
any breeze, which meant a bad day for casting but we made the
best of it. We are very grateful to the farmer, Robin for
getting the grass cut and letting us cast. Well most of us used
the time to practice for the upcoming light line day in two
weeks but with the high pressure and little wind distance would
be down but it was ideal for setting up reels to run for the
skinnies. Six of us casted today but some had to leave early, I
hope your father is OK Graeme? One thing I did learn today was
to pack sunscreen as I am a little bit burnt.
