Todays event was not a scheduled themed event but rather one of
our ordinary "run-what-you-brung" days. An event were we can
cast whichever weights we want to - under UCC rules of course
and a day for practice and maybe a little experimenting.
We actually had a whole field to ourselves today with no sheep
or cows to contend with. Of course it did happen to be the top
sloping field on the left and with the wind forecast from the
NNW - read, anywhere from NW to NE. We ended up casting with
the slope rising sharply from left to right and the court had to
run uphill but we managed it and had very few problems
considering that the grass is getting long and thick to add to
       the problems of the slope.
There wasn't too much to get excited about in the way of big
distances overall but we did have a couple of pb's later in the
day on the 18g plug. These were in the fixed spool category but
the wind was blowing over the official limit so these fall in
the all conditions listing. Well done to MC and Stevie on their
       plug pb's.

Well today was a great day for us to do anything other than
casting. This was an ordinary day for us so we could cast
whatever we wanted to but the conditions had other ideas about
that. Two fields were available but with the wind direction it
was safer for us to use the top sloping field, or at least we
thought so. Unfortunately that meant casting across the slope
with it rising from left to right fairly sharply. This means
modified casts to cope with the rise and to hopefully not smack
the ground with the weights. That didn't work out too well for
some of us today and a lot of time was spent (read - wasted) in
the search for the resulting snap-offs. The fact that the grass
was also reaching towards knee height didn't help things at all.
It made it heavy going to try and walk over the field when
retrieving your weight - and it was wet. It got to the point
that it was decided to cut our losses and wrap it up early as
today wasn't a scheduled theme day and we headed home. With a
bit of luck the grass may be cut for our next event, but we're
       not too hopeful on that.
Five members turned up today for a chance to get a bit of
practice in but the conditions took the edge of that idea and
most of us reverted to casting the skinnies. The idea in that
was that we wouldn't have to walk as far through that grass to
get them back after casting. Stevie did battle it out with the
200g and finished just over the 240 yard line casting across the
slope and slightly up hill but it wasn't pretty! Not much else
in the way of decent distances was recorded today as looking for
snap-offs took more time than we liked and ate into our
       enthusiasm.
       19-05-2019 results -
       Stevie - 200g /241y PB

Got word on Thursday that the grass had been cut and gathered
in, so the word was sent out and 8 member turn up 7 of us where
there to do battle with the 125g lead. With the wind coming from
a southwest changing to westerly later, the upper field was the
only one suitable. So we set up on the sloping upper corner and
put the court out and started the first round. Soon after start
the wind went westerly so we had a slope and a cross wind to
deal with but at last the grass was cut.
       Results for 30/6/19 125g day.

Today was our scheduled "Light Line Day". That means casting
       100g, 75g and 50g - all on O.25mm main line with a 50lbs minimum
leader. It was a great day weather wise with sunshine all day
and a light breeze that actually stayed in the direction we
wanted. It was only a light breeze of 2 to 5mph but anything is
better than nothing. We also had high air pressure which did us
       no favours.
The light line event consists of four casts on each weight with
your best cast from each weight being added together to give
each caster their overall aggregate score - the longest
aggregate score being the overall winner of the event. It was
an interesting day with the final result not what some were
expecting but maybe a lesson or two learned in the process.
       Time will tell maybe.
We had seven members turn up to take part today. We were also
able to get into the second field that is more or less flat
which gave us high hopes of some decent distances but that
wasn't to be. On the plus side it did provide some close
competition right up to the end of the day. In the end there
wasn't that much distance separating the top three or four
aggregate distances and the results could easily have been
different. Still is was a great day to be out slinging some
       lead about the place.
Results for the Light Line Day - 14-07-2019

With our next scheduled event being the Ultralite Challenge on
August 25th today was our last chance to get some much needed
practice in for it. The ultralites are the 18g plastic plug and
the mighty 1oz lead weight but for some reason though several
members chose to start off chucking great big lumps of lead
around the place. Whatever - some people just don't read the
       memo it seems...
Thankfully the forecast showers and rain stayed away for the
time we were there and we did have a reasonable breeze. It was
a bit gusty at times and it wasn't blowing directly down the
court but we were happy to have it. It does mean that the plug
distances go down in the wind assisted column for today but
that's ok As the day went on more casters switched to the plug
and 1oz with the idea of getting reels set up for the challenge.
It looks like the plug will be cast in seperate multiplier and
fixed spool categories at the event for the first time. It
seems several members may see this as the easier option over the
vagaries of setting up a multiplier for it. The Ultralite
Challenge is shaping up to be an interesting event. Now all we
need is the grass cut at the oche!
       Todays results -
       Stevie  =  18g plug(fs)/108y PB
       175g/259y
       M.C.  = 18g plug(fs)/97y

Today was the day some hate and others . . . well - don't hate
as much. THE SKINNIES! In other words this was the clubs
sceduled Ultralite event. A day set aside each year were we
cast only the 18g plug and the mighty 1oz. Usually a good laugh
if nothing else but there's also another competition hidden in
the proceedings. This competition is a personal event between
MC and Benny. It follows along the same lines of the main event
but they must cast each weight 4 times with the fixed spool and
4 times with the multiplier. The longest distance wins bragging
rights for the next year as well as a bottle of whisk(e)y.
Their distances also counted for the main skinnies event.
The forecast was for a steady breeze up to around 10mph from the
southwest - wrong! We did enjoy a cloudless and very hot and
sunny day though. We set the court up with the very light
breeze of about 2mph running down the court with the hope that
it would pick up - it didn't but it did turn and blow straight
across court and at times coming back up the court towards the
oche a little. We put up with it for the duration of the 1oz
event but for the 18g plugs we changed the court around.
Unfortunately the breeze decided to change its direction as well
       - back to straight across court. It was only blowing at around
2mph or so but it was annoying and did the plugs no favours if
there was any height in the cast. For the last round on the
plug we ditched the court and cast with the light breeze, more
out of frustration than anything but it did show how much
distance even this light breeze was stealing from us. An
enjoyable day for some of us but a painful one for others -
can't wait for next years event!

A free day to play and, yes - it bloody rained for the most of
it. Typical! We also had to use the second field from the
road. It having the least amount of livestock in it but the
wind direction at the start of the day was wrong and was blowing
directly toward the farmers house. For safety's sake we had to
set up with the wind blowing across the court. It wasn't that
bad and as this was just a practice day it didn't present much
of a problem - except for those casting plugs. Later in the day
the wind died away so we got a few plugs away to decent
       distances.
We also had the oportunity to welcome new caster, Jonathan Kerr
to the club meeting. For someone relatively new to distance
casting he put down some nice looking casts using the
off-the-ground style. With more practice and a little tweek
here and there he's got a lot of potential and some very long
casts ahead of him. Todays conditions weren't going to do him,
or the rest of us any favours though. It didn't take very long
before we were all soaked, or at least very damp and wishing we
       were somewhere else.
There wasn't much in the way of big distances today thanks to
the rain, wet gear and initial wind direction but we still had a
go and had the odd laugh along the way.

Today was a free day, as in we could cast whatever weights we
wanted to - within the club's rules of course. A chance to get
some practice in for up coming events and get some work done on
       techniques.
We got to use the second field in from the road again with the
wind blowing from the north west all day. We weren't able to
angle the court enough to have the wind blowing directly down
the court but it was near enough for what we wanted. More
importantly for us was that it didn't rain in the time we were
there and the ground stayed firm under foot and didn't turn to
mud. It was cold in the wind to start off but it turned into a
       nice day.
There were six members in attendance today with every weight
from 18gs to 175gs being used. There was also a little
competition between MC and Tommy on various weights to add a
       little interest.

it was a chance for members to get some much needed parctice in

everything from 18g plastic plugs all the way up to 175g lead
       weights - as usual!
We actually had a very pleasant day with the sun doing its best
to keep us dry and warm - as long as we were in the shelter of
the hedge. We also had the benefit of the wind blowing more or
less straight down the court - nothing dramatic but a steady 10
to 15mph for the time we were there. Much appreciated compared
to what we usually have to contend with. Even with the rain
we've had over the course of the week the field was reasonably
       dry and firm under foot.

Today was a mixture of highs and lows, high expectations with
low pressure. There was a little breeze enough to ruffle the
flags at times and the sun shone bright all day. All this sounds
like it could've been a good day but also meant the field was
covered in money spider webs which soon transferred to our lines
causing a few snap offs. As the day went on the amount of web
material built up causing line to rattle as it passed through
the eyes, it also was causing line drag cutting distance.
With the 100g event in two weeks most members choose to practise
that lead and stayed on it all day and as always the craic was
good even if the casting wasn't. No doubt all the other members
are doing the same as me and stripping spider silk off the reels
for the competition in two weeks.
