Today was the last of the scheduled events in the UCC 2018
calendar. This was the secret pairs event and is usually well
looked forward to. But this years event was to follow on it
seems in the pattern of most of the rest of this years scheduled
events with poor attendance. Only four members were able to
make it today and that is the least number we've ever had for
this competition and the minimum number we need to run it.
For this event all that is needed is your longest cast of the
day. Each caster is free to use whatever size weights they
want, abiding by the clubs rules of line diameters of course.
Each casters name is put into a "hat" and at the end of the
casting pairs of names will be drawn to form team pairs. Their
longest casts will be added together and the pair with the
longest total wins - simple! Of course there is also the other
end of the stick - or should I say the wooden spoon prize. This
prize is for the pair with the shortest overall combined
distance. This year the wooden spoons were proudly (?) won
after a hard battle by Benny and MC - well done! To be fair
there really wasn't much between everone and it could easily
have been a different result but that's the joy of this event.
You don't know how you've done until all the names are called
and distances added up.
After the heavy rain yesterday we were a little worried about
the condition the fields would be in but they were fine and for
the most part fairly dry underfoot. Even the sheep stayed off
the court today! Of course the forecast 15 to 22mph SSW wind
never turned up and we were left with a light breeze at best
that at it's strongest barely touched 4 or 5mph before dying
away completely, and it came from the south east for the most
part. Still, we did get into No.3 field which is fairly flat
and we angled the court as best as we could. Still had a bit of
a crosswind but with no strength to it, it caused no real
problems.
It was not a great day for big distances for us and we all
struggled to even reach the 200y line for various reasons. But
in the end even with limited numbers there we enjoyed the day -
and it stayed dry!!!
Results for the secret pairs event :-
1st place - Sean & Tommy =407y
Wooden spoon masters - MC & Benny =396y

For those interested there is one final event this year on
Dec.30th. It's just an ordinary event but this years prize
giving will be held at the end of casting so please try to
attend.

Today was our last event of 2018. Not so much a proper
competition event, rather an end of the year get together and
also our yearly end of season prize giving. A rather fitting
end to the year saw us in the top left field for one last time
casting across the slope. At least it stayed dry but of course
we had an annoying cross court wind that played havoc with the
plugs and 1oz casts, blowing many out of court to the right. It
became a mini competition just to try and keep the wee weights
in court.
There wasn't much in the way of notible casts today but with a
few new bits of gear on show there may be a few new pb's next
year, especially with the lighter weights! Most of us chose to
play with the smaller weights and have a bit of fun rather than
try to blast the bigger weights across the slope. It also meant
less walking to do for most of us - a little blessing for those
of us getting older and maybe not in the fullness of health.
It was nice to see a more generous turn out today for the last
event of 2018 with 7 of us taking up the challenge to bend some
carbon. It looks like the annual light line challenge next year
between Benny and MC could be a little more interesting with
both adding new reels to their armoury. MC might now have the
equipment to finally take the fight to Benny and make him work
for that prize of a bottle of whisky. We all look forward to
see the results of that one! There were several new club
records set this year in the 1oz and 18g categories in both
multiplier and fixed spool and that looks like continuing
With tomorrow being the last day of 2018 the Ulster Casting Club
would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy and
healthy 2019 - Have a happy New Year!

Today was the first event of 2019 for the club and a chance to
practice for the up coming 175g day. There were 7 members in
attendance to brave the conditions. The day was mainly dry with
only a few very light skiffles but we had a great wind gusting
up to over 40mph at times and it was cold. But of course it was
almost directly blowing accross the field - typical! We angled
the court as much as we could to account for the wind direction
but it still caused a few problems, especially for those playing
with the plastic fantastic. On the up side we did get to see a
new fixed spool 1oz club record set by Benny using his new toys.
Well done Benny!

A very cold and windy day and to top it off plenty of light snow
showers. Not enough to lie but enough to chill us to the bone.
The wind was very blustery and was blowing from NNW to WNW
causing a few peoblems when swinging the lighter weights. Today
was the last practice session for the 175g day coming at the
next event. The first half of the day was spent using the 175g
but as the cold got the better of us most moved on to lighter
weights, including the 1oz and 18g plug. They proved
challenging in the heavy gusts but in the end there weren't many
noteworthy casts with any of the weights used today. It was
just too cold and uncomfortable.

Today was the first scheduled event of the 2019 season and it
was for the mighty 175g. Of course the weather was doing it's
best to spoil our happiness, as usual with the wind very much
stuck blowing from the west and cold with it. That's directly
across the four parallel fields leaving us next to no wiggle
room with the court. Fortunately with only 8 sheep in the top
righthand field we were able to use it today. The west wind was
manageable in that field but it was bitterly cold. It stayed
dry up until around 2pm then the rain started, light at first
but of course it got heavier as did the wind. With the wind
chill factor added on that rain turned to sleet and light snow
at times and was being driven hard so with the main event over
we measured up, packed up and headed home for a bit of much
needed heat.
There were 5 members present today with 4 competing in the 175g
event. But with the conditions trying to turn us into icicles
and the oche becoming more slippery there wasn't much in the way
of big casts put down. There were a couple of personal bests
though and another new 1oz multiplier club record for good
measure so the day wasn't all bad.

Not a great day for some and worse for others but it was a free
day to get on with some practice. We had to use the top sloping
field today as the flat field next to it had a bull in it and he
didn't look like he wanted to share. His loss as we're such
nice folks!
There wasn't the wind that was forecast although it was bitterly
cold but at least it stayed dry. The SSE wind direction meant
that we had to cast uphill across the slope and to top it off
the fields were enveloped in a heavy mist for most of the day.
It was heavy enough that we couldn't even see half way along the
court and it felt like we were casting off of the end of the
earth and into white nothingness. Later in the day the wind
direction changed round to blow from the SW, across the court
just to add to our misery. To add to the conditions we also had
to be careful where we stepped as the fields had very recently
been muck sprayed - delightful, and slippery!
Nothing much in the way of big distances today as this field
always takes it's toal on us with the slope but a few decent
casts were made in court as well as out of it. Hopefully we
will get to use the flat field for the next event as it's our
scheduled "TRC" event.

Well this years TRC competition got off to a great start - by
being cancelled and postponed. Only four club members were able
to make it today of which only two were fit enough to cast the
weights required for the event. So it was decided to postpone
the TRC event until our next meeting in two weeks. Not a bad
decision given the weatherwe were faced with.
As is the usual case for us the forecast for today changed
slightly as the week progressed. The westerly wind direction
remained but it's strength was greatly reduced from an early
forecasted 80 odd miles per hour down to a still very blustery
mid thirties plus. The freezing temperature also made it to
today as did the threat of rain and snow. It all made for a
very cold and uncomfortable day. The blustery wind caused
problems at the oche especially for the lighter weights and was
a real nightmare for the 18g plug and 1oz. We got into the top
righthand field today but we still had to set the court up with
the wind blowing down the court but very much left to right.
That meant that hitting the light weights high for distance
meant the wind blew them far right and out of court. Extra
clothing to combat the cold didn't help either. Still we did
manage to see a new personal best for the 18g plug (multiplier)
and also a close threat to the recent 1oz multiplier record as
well.
Regarding the casting of the 18g plastic plug the club has
decided to add an additional listing for it to the club's record
list. There already are listings for the 18g that follow the
ICSF rules regarding maximum wind strength and there are club
records for both multiplier and fixed spool in that category.
But the club has decided to add a listing for casts made
regardless of wind speed. These casts are more caster oriented
personal best based records rather than full on Ulster records
for that particular weight.

Today we held the TRC competition that was meant to be held at
the last event. Of course it wasn't that simple. For a start
we were faced with a severe cross court wind all day that
eventually turned slightly to blow back up the court as the day
went on. We also had to put up with showers all day long with
some heavy enough to call a halt to the casting until they
passed over. We did get a day full of rainbows though, but
that's another story! The only field we could get access to was
the top sloping field on the left of the lane. Casting from a
sloping oche, across a sloping field withlots of rain and a
fierce cross court wind - yeah, par for the course for us.
We had a few big hitters attend today including Scotland's Billy
Russell and Adam Scholes as well as our own Stevie Ratcliffe,
but even these guys had real difficulty in passing the 200 yard
line at times. The aim of the day was to have four casts on
each of the core weights with at least one of them being cast
otg - casters choice. Then their longest cast from each weight
will be added together to give the caster his overall distance.
That was the plan but the field and conditions decided to have a
little fun with us and it was interesting to see the panic and
confusion take hold as the day progressed. In the end Stevie
Ratcliffe had the longest aggregate distance of the day so won
the 2019 TRC event. Billy Russell earned a well fought second
place with Adam claiming third place overall.
Well done to all who attended today and braved the conditions.

This was a real tester of a day for us. The forecast was for a
straigh easterly wind averaging up to around 18mph. That's
directly accross the four main fields we use and none of them
are wide enough to allow us to angle the court enough to allow
for the wind direction, plus they all had a mix of sheep, cows
and bulls in them. that meant that the only field available to
us today was the field to the right of the lane. This is a
field we seldom get into but it does allow us to east to west
and west to east. Unfortunately it is a field on a slope and
with todays forecast it meant we were going to have to cast
uphill again.
The number of sheep already in the field did a good job of
staying out of our way and we got the court set up to account
for the wind direction. But of course as we set up for round
one the wind died away to barely a light air movement. When
there was any movement it barely managed 1 to 2mph but we were
set up and that was us for the day. This was just an ordinary
day anyway to get some practice in and not a specific event so
we just got on with it. Our 150g day is looming so most
practiced with that for the first half of the day before moving
on to other weight sizes.
Of course with casting up hill and with next to no following
wind distances were nothing to write home about. I think
actually having an almost level oche to cast from sort of threw
most of us a little as we've become more acustomed to casting on
a slope. Still, it was the same for everyone there but it'll
spoil us for the next event, probably!

Today was the clubs annual 150g challenge event. A glorious day
with sunshine and a nice gentle breeze, even if it was blowing a
little across court. We ended up having to use the road side
field today as the rest had sheep, lambs and cattle in them.
This isn't our favourite field to use but it beats having no
field to cast in. It demands a bit more than just brute force
casting with a public road running down the side of it. The S/W
breeze blowing across court towards the road didn't help much
either and with the field not being that much wider than the
court is at 250yards, it takes a bit of thought and practice to
keep everything in court. Still, we ran the event and there
were no problems with wayward weights - except for the odd
snap-off that landed well in court. Six members turned up to
participate with the 150g.
