Well today was never going to be a serious event, more of a
practice session for the up coming 125g day on the 9th
September. It was not a great day weather wise, actually it was
down right miserable to be honest. It rained all day for all
but the last half hour or so. The wind was little more than a
slight movement and added nothing to the days proceedings. It
was a very humid, misty and muggy day which robbed the energy
out of the casts and us and many yards from the distances. This
coupled with us having to use the top sloping field made for a
hard and unrewarding day. We also had a very low turn out with
work and the weather getting in the road but at least those who
did turn up gave it a go.
Not much worth measuring today with the conditions but there
were a few distances recorded -
MC = 125g /209y
Benny = 125g /189y
Sean = 18g / 124y

Thankfully today was for practice rather than a main event. It
rained for most of the day and with the grass growing well it
was hard work trudging through it. With 4 of the 5 fields
unavailable we were forced to use the roadside field. It is not
a favourite field to use but it was either that or go home.
Seeing as we were there we stayed and got some practice in. By
early afternoon the wind died away to nothing and the rain eased
so we played around with the 18g plugs, but the humidity went
through the roof and the temperature rose sharply killing any
fun we were having. Of course the wind and rain returned
shortly after but by that stage we'd had enough and packed up.
It was a hard day.
There were only four members who turned up today.
MC = 125g /198y
Benny = 125g / 200y, 1oz/ 142y
Sean = 18g /120y
Stevie = 18g / 99y (PB)

We had a late start to the day. After setting up the court and
getting the gear set up we were asked if we could hold off for
an hour. There were sheep dogs up for sale and they were to be
put through trials first. It took nearly 2hours but was
entertaining to watch.
We were in the third field today but for safety reasons we had
to set the court up with the wind blowing directly across court.
A bit of an annoyance as it was blowing around 20mph gusting to
30+. It had been decided that today would be the clubs 125g day
as we had a better turn out, a bit of a rarity these days. The
position of the oche meant that any attempt to gain height would
have the belly of the line blow across the hedges along the
right side of the court. As a result magnets weren’t backed of
as quickly to try and keep the line inside the field we were in.
We managed the dizzy heights of 7 members today and a future
member in the making - that’s a big day for the UCC these days!
Well done all for making a day of it.

Today was a non specific day so we could use whatever weight
sizes we wanted. So for those who turned up it was a day to
play and experiment. The forecast of big winds never made it -
as expected, but we did have a gusty breeze blowing from right
to left but mainly blowing along the court. That's better than
mose of our events so we were happy with it. The showers we
could have done without though. We also had to use the sloping
field as it had the least amount of livestock in it.
Congratulations must go to Benny for raising the 1oz fixed spool
club record by a substantial 10 yards! It now stands at
151-2-11, well done! It looks like Tommy will have his work cut
out to try and regain it. We look forward to the challenge!
Both Bobby and MC stuck with the 100g for most of the day as the
clubs 100g day is only two events away so the chance to practice
was welcomed. Neither managed any huge casts but coping with
the conditions and the slope of the field meant their results
were most welcomed.
Unfortunately Sean's shoulder problems from the last event
haven't healed and that stopped him from casting "real" weights.
Instead he had a few painful goes with the 18g plastic plug -
something he'll regret in the morning probably. But he did
manage a cast of 148yards with the plug before proceedings
ended. Unfortunately it won't be counted as a club record as
the wind was gusting over the maximum permitted speed for plug
casting. A great cast all the same.
Results for 23-09-2018 -
MC - 125g= 208y
Bobby -100g/176y
Benny - 1oz / 151-2-11 (New UCC 1oz Fixed Spool record)
Sean - 18g / 148yards

Today was the club's 100g Event day. Injuries and such kept one
or two away but there were 5 club members in attendance with 4
entering the 100g event. We managed to get the use of field
No.3 which is flat, of course the crosswind was a bit of a
problem but at least the rain soon fizzled out.
The event consisted of 12 rounds of casts with a fairly close
competition between the two front runners but in the end MC
managed to pull out the longest cast of the day that landed in
court. Well done MC.
Also the 1oz multiplier club record was raised a little to the
dizzying heights of 202yards 1foot 7inches. It was the last
cast of the day and the only 1oz cast of the day. There was
also a PB of 153yards today with the 18g plug made while testing
a new rod. The cast was "wind assisted" so won't be classed as
a club record.
100g Event Results
MC = 229y
Stevie =227y
Tommy =196y
Benny =195y
Sean = 18g / 153y pb
1oz / 202-1-7 Ulster and club record

The forecast for today was for a near southerly wind with no
rain covering the time we would be there, and it actually
happened! Of course the wind faded away as the day went on to
practically no wind at the close of play, but at least we didn't
get wet - for once. We also had less cloud cover than was
forecast so we enjoyed the sun for longer than expected. Just
the thing for Benny as he was celebrating his birthday today
with the first cast of his new rod - happy birthday, Benny!
This was not a specific event day so we were free to cast
whatever weights we wanted to so the gambit ran from 18g plugs
up to 175gs. Of course not everything went our way as we had to
use the top sloping field and casting accross that is never
straightforward. We also had to share it with quite a lot of
sheep although they caused us little trouble - apart from all
the nice little presents they left all over the place.
Casting accross the slop can be tricky so usually distances
aren't the best when using that field. In fact it can be
considered a good day if you get through the day without hitting
the ground as you cast. Thankfully there were few deckings
today. We did see the 18g club record raised when the wind died
away towards the end of the day to virtually nothing plus a wind
assisted personal best for the same person!
Stevie = 150g / 255y
M.C. = 175g / 222y, 150g /219y, 125g /214y, 100g /221y
Tommy =100g/ 214
Benny = 18g / ncr, 1oz / 156y multiplier 147y fixed spool
Scrab =ncr
Sean = 18g / 131-1-1 New UCC Club Record ,wind was less than

Today's event and the next one on the 2nd December are practice
days for the upcoming "secret pairs" event on the 16th december.
In the secret pairs event each caster is free to use whichever
weight or weights they wish to achieve their longest cast. At
the end of the event everyones name will be put into a hat to be
drawn out and paired with another. Their longest casts will
then be added together for their overall score. The longest
overall combined distance wins. So, with this in mind some of
todays casters chose to run through their more favourite weights
whilst others were more deliberate in their choice.
We had a lovely day out with sun all day long. As usual the
wind didn't have the strength forecast but it did blow straight
across the field for most of the day. On the plus side we did
get to use the flat field below the sloping field. It has more
width than the other fields so allowed us to angle the court a
little so the breeze wasn't blowing straight across the court.
Even with the sun though it was a cold day if you weren't
actively casting and the high air pressure added another hurdle
to work with.
Five casters took part today but with the conditions in place
and with the pairs comp coming up practice and tuning was more
important than all out competition. The results are as follows
:-
Results for 18th-11-2018
M.C. = 50g /ncr , 100g / 213 y, 125g /212y, 150g/213y, 175g
/210
Tommy = 18g /94y, 1oz /125g/201y,
Benny = 18g /100y, 1oz /157y, 50g/158y
Bobby = 50g /143y,
Scrab = NCR

Today was the last chance for those entering the secret pairs
competition to get some final practice in before the day itself.
Well, it would have been if anybody had bothered to turn up.
Fair enough, work and car problems counted two members out but
for the rest - what happened? Did you all think you'd desolve
in the rain..?
Whatever. Seeing as only two members made it today there wasn't
enough members to run a competition (minimum meeded is 3
members) so we used the oportunity to sort out our gear and do
some fine tuning to our casts. We had the chance to use the top
field to the right today in the hope that the forecast wind
would arrive and we could have taken advantage of it for once.
But for the majority of the time we were there the wind wasn't.
A light breeze started to blow about 20 minutes before we called
it quits as the rain had gotten heavier. But even when it
gusted it barely made 8mph and we'd had enough by that stage
anyway.
The only casts measured today were for the 18g plug.
Unfortunately the only measuring device we had was a laser
rangefinder and we don't use that to measure possible club
records, we use a proper tape measure, which we didn't have with
us. That was a pity as one cast - 132y, was the equal of the
club record or slighty further done in flat calm conditions. A
few casts later and a cast of 136y was made followed by a 138y
cast. By that time a slight breeze had come up but it barely
broke 5mph. We finished off the day with a pair of 141y casts
as the breeze strengthened slightly in the rain. The wind was
accurately measured by Benny's anomometer with the last two
casts done with the wind gusts touching 8mph. In the end the
rain called time and the breeze was blowing straight across the
court so we packed up and headed home.
The next event is on the 16th dec and is the scheduled secret
pairs event. Good luck to those thinking of entering...
