CSCA April 2018 Casting Tournament recap
Another spring casting season is in the books. We had a good
turnout and some really good…. Ok GREAT casting!!!
First I want to recognize and thank our Australian guest, Jeremy
Schrader. Jeremy is in the middle of an extended USA vacation
with his wonderful wife Sue and made arrangements to cast with
us this weekend. Jeremy is a friend, a great caster and a gifted
teacher. Thanks Jeremy!!!
Friday was a beautiful day. Sunny, warm and a good stiff SW
wind. Jeremy and I put on a small casting clinic. It was fun and
the participants picked up a LOT of distance quickly. I think we
made a pretty darn good team and made some fishermen very
happy…. 
Saturday;
What a difference a day makes…lol. While Friday was a perfect
casters day, Saturday was brutal. The day started around 50
degrees with light rain. During the second or third round, the
skies darkened the wind and rain picked up and the temperature
dropped quickly to around 40 deg. We cast (bundled up with
layers, rain coats and muckboots) until early afternoon and
called it a day. We were cold wet and tired…
Sunday;
Sunday was a better day. The skies were clear, air was cold
early and we had a decent 10+ mph wind behind us. I was
surprised and happy to see an old friend and longtime casting
rival Larry Brooks walking over to get registered. Larry and I
have competed for close to 20 years but only a few times in the
recent past. Larry is a fine gentleman and (as the results show)
a GREAT caster.
In the 1st round Larry showed he was there to win as he jumped
out to an early lead around 760 feet.
The competition was STRONG. Our newest 800’ man, Mike Langston
was not deterred by Larry’s cast. Mike soon took the lead. Then
our young up and coming star Ryan Lambert bombed one out there
to challenge for the top spot. Angel V and I tried every rod and
reel we owned in vain to catch these guys but it was just not to
be. Then, sometime in the early afternoon, Mr. Brooks crushed a
cast out to 780 feet for the win.
I am very happy for and impressed by Larry. He is 64 years old
and is better now than he has ever been.
CONGRATULATIONS Larry Brooks on an impressive and well-earned
victory!!! We hope to see you back in the fall. I have been
feeling old and slow lately. You sir, have shown me what is
possible and that age truly is just a number. Very well done.
Until September,
