Hi I'm always hearing about the advantages of low reel casting
but what are the advantages of high reel casting i prefer reel
up multiplier casting for otg and flatter pendulum casts .
Although i prefer reel down for high swing .ive noticed that a
lot of the Argentinian and Italian castwrs cast reel up
especially the lasr few world champions so surely there must be
some positive advantages to reel up

Percy then person who taught me how to pendulum cast uses high
reel only ! And let me tell u he bends any rod wickedly and hes
one of the casters I've ever seen ! He always says what's the
big deal of this modern style low reel stuff as for me i use low
reel but all I can say use high or low reel most importantly
you're comfortable and your style develops and you cast your
best high or low reel !- do what you think is right and go for
       it !
Incidentally Google high Vs low reel casting by John Holden you
will gets lots of info there

Never tried hi reel apart from using fixed spool, but it makes
the rod feel a good bit stiffer. I just prefer the balance of
       low reel.

Bill i used to cast reel down until i started watch a few of the
Italian casters such as Fillippo montepagno ,nicola bonnelli and
really liked what i saw especially the way they finished the
cast so i started playing about reel up and the rod did feel
less balanced at first as Stevie mentioned so i moved the reel
up to 95cm after Filippo suggested i try it higher up at first
until i get used reel up and this wasa revelation and after a
while ive moved the reel lower down by a centimeter every month
now ive got it at 90 cm and now it feels equally as balanced as
95cm im hoping to get it down to 85cm if i can get away with it
. I have always had an impossible to break habit of hitting rods
way too early but since i started casting very long powerful
rods such as t1200,s and gloriosa
strongs ive stopped doing this almost immediately due to the
fact that reel up hitting such rods early resulted in nearly
being snapped in half at least it felt like that have noticed
my weak left arm pull has changed dramatically and now im very
left arm dominant and pull really hard with my left where as it
previously contributed very little to the cast and now i also
cast with a slightly more straightened right arm as previously
it was almost bent like a right angle no matter how much i tried
to keep it straightish .The hardest thing was getting used to
reeling in reel up if im honest but now actually prefer it and i
dont think i will go back to reel down

Percy firstly I must clarify I don cast on the field I'm hardly
a tourney caster I just cast for fun with user friendly rods on
the beach but I take casting very seriously and enjoy it
       thoroughly.
But this I can tell you if you're comfortable with reel up and
it's giving you what you want then what's stopping you ? You
should not follow others follow yourself and if you find that
you can have a better left hand pull and straighter arms etc
with high reel then stick to it.
I've seen many high reel casters that can REALLY CAST ! more
than this please Stevie and other tourney casters here stevie -
he's a superb tourney caster who can advise accordingly.
IMHO - some reasons why i prefer low reel -but this just my
opinion i could be wrong !
1.fantastic grip you can really grip super hard with lower hand
       !
2.better balance and can really feel rod bending in your hands
fantastic sensation ! Also rods become more manageable
3.right hand is free to punch more freedom to really let fly !
Also Google John Holden high reel Vs low reel he's a genius on
casting ! Very practical approach and great info always
By the way those are super powerful rods you're using buddy well
       done !

Yeah Bill i realize your not a competitive caster as ive been
watching your videos from day one and have thoroughly enjoyed
them i also think you have a lovely cast you make it look
effortless the same way mackellow did who i presume influenced
your casting style somewhat as your casts very similar and i
certainly respect your opinion whether you cast competitive or
not.Me personally i tried to teach myself to cast from reading
john holdens articles in sea angler and from watching various
videos but not really knowing what i was doing i developed some
seriously bad habits which seem to be seriously stuck in place ,
watching Stevie's videos has helped enormously and i now have a
much more thorough understanding of what im supposed to be doing
im just struggling to get my body to do what my brains telling
it to do so i thought if i tried reel up casting it may possibly
be like starting from a blank canvas without all the ingrained
bad habits ie bent right arm zero use of left arm and poor use
of weight transfer and im positive moving to reel up casting is
having a marvelous effect .As for john holden hes of the opinion
for out and out distance reel up casting isnt the way to go i
read of him saying that "i would never of made any realy long
casts reel up let alone won any tournament s" i can understand
his opinion as most people seem to gain yards when they change
       to reel down .
