birthday parties? Both of my kids' bdays are in the summer. I
always worry their friends can't come because they will be on
vacation. Do you guys worry their friends won't come or did you
(if your kids are grown now)? I don't want to stress over it
because there is nothing i can do about it, but i still worry
because i want my kids to have a good party with their friends.

That's what we are doing... a pool party. I just hope at least a
few friends can make it.

Dd and ds aren't both summer babies but they both have had party
issues because they do sometimes fall on, or near, a holiday.
Before they started school we kept the parties to just adults
that are special to them and any family friends with kids. Those
were usually well attended and lots of fun. However once they
started school I had to be a little more careful about when the
parties fell to ensure we had a decent turn out.
Dd's birthday is Aug 4 so we're almost always dealing with the
Aug long weekend. At first we just invited all the girls in her
class and some friends and cousins from outside of school. After
a couple of years I saw a pattern of who could be counted on to
attend or not, and how each family responded to the invites. We
tried to keep the party the weekend of her birthday or the one
after and made sure we invited the girls who we knew we'd get a
response from and who always came. Some of the other girls still
got invites but we knew better than stress over if they would
come or not. As the girls got older we started having smaller
parties but for her 11th birthday we were able to have the
biggest group in a while. I think it had a lot to do with the
theme, that it was a sleepover, and the fact that I put in a
little more effort than usual to get the invites out shortly
after school ended and put the rsvp date several weeks later.
Her 12th birthday will be the smallest yet (just her 2 besties)
and that's by her choice. The parties will start to be less
organized for a while too. 13 will be spent in Denmark with dh's
family, and then 16 and 18 will be the other birthdays that I
will allow to be a big deal.
Ds's birthday is Apr 8 and can land him on or very near Easter.
We've only had problems getting a good turn out the last couple
of years, and as much as it upset him he ended up enjoying the
smaller groups more than the bigger. I try not to let the what
ifs worry me when it comes to his parties because I know that if
it's on or near the holiday or the school break we probably
won't have that great a response. Like with his sister we know
who we'll typically see and just invite them and keep the party
ideas small and special. For his 10th birthday (this year) he
and dh spent the night in one of the nicer hotels in town and
his bestfriends and sister joined him for some fun in the pool
and then pizza and cupcakes in their room.
The less you allow yourself to worry about the size of the group
the easier (and more fun) it'll be to plan and actually enjoy
their special days. Let the kids chose who to invite and plan
the parties. Let their excitement be yours [emoji4][emoji320]
