To care about and help other people, to love animals, good
manners are some of the valuable life lessons mom taught me

Be kind. Listen to others and your own inner voice. Be of
service whenever you can. Family is important even if you aren't
getting along 100%.

Mother taught me I was always wrong. Never speak back to a
parent. Eye contact equals getting hit. She never told me she
loved me but I was always "the mistake". And never ever raise
your voice.
I taught DD to question everything. Speak to us on an topic she
wants. Always make eye contact & if she's mad about something -
say something. I tell DD I love her throughout the day.

unfortunately my mama passed away but my sister taught me
courage;strength and that she will always have my back

She taught me good manners and how to dress well. She pushed me
to be smart, to always be curious, to be outgoing and make
things happen. She taught me to be caring towards others. And
what it means to love unconditionally.
She also taught me to get help for my emotional problems. She
keeps her heartaches to herself, refuses to see a therapist, and
suffers a lot. She tells me what's going on, but she needs more
help and support than that (plus it stresses me out). So her not
doing taught me to do.

My Mom was a "feminist" long before it was fashionable. She was
the only daughter of Italian immigrants, and had 4 brothers.
Mom could cook, wash, iron, and clean like a pro. She could
also do math in her head and balance her checkbook in like 15
minutes. She could also fix anything with anything - wrench,
screwdriver, paperclips, hairpins. For over 25 years she worked
full time as a buyer for an electronics firm. She knew, and
taught me, how to be a "lady" in a man's world. She kept an
immaculate home, loved my Dad and my brother & me more than
anything. She was strong in the face of just about anything,
including breast cancer, the premature deaths of her brother and
my Dad's brother, my Dad's poor health (he died at 64 of lung
cancer), and her own final illness. Her chicken soup could cure
a rainy day. When DS went on his first deployment to Iraq as a
Marine, her words resonated then (as they still do - he's a
police officer now). She said, "you have to trust that Frank
can take care of himself." She's gone 10 years and I miss her
every day.

I didn't so much get taught by her as I learned the hard way.
While you need to care for yourself you need to be there for
your family. As much as I admired her drive to go back to
university and get her BSN so she could get a better job she
neglected our family in a big way when my siblings and I were at
ages where we needed her the most. Playing favorites really
really can't happen, no matter how perfect one child is in your
eyes! And it's important to support your kids in everything they
chose to do, even if you don't agree with it.
