My mom and some aunts have traced my family (both sides) back a
LONG way but the kids and I have only gone back 3 or so
generations for school stuff.

I have a 2nd or 3rd cousin on my father’s side who did that. My
mother’s side would be harder because she was an immigrant. A
cousin of hers did the same kind of thing, but assumed that
since she was handicapped she never had children. I don’t think
much of his research techniques.

No. One of my aunts is a professional genealogist, and if I
want to know something about our ancestors, I just ask her. I
am interested in that kind of stuff, but it can be difficult to
get much research done without either spending money or having
professional connections.

My sister does and has uncovered some pretty cool facts about
our history and has reconnected with some distant relatives.
