Chat with Batista. Talks Spectre, Acting & more

IT takes a lot to rattle former mixed martial artist and
professional wrestler Dave Bautista, who is 1.98m tall and
weighs in at an impressive 126kg.
But Daniel Craig accomplished it on the set of the new James
       Bond movie Spectre.
“After years of professional wrestling, I don’t need a whole lot
of preparation to go from nice guy to kick-arse guy,’’ Bautista
       says.
“But Daniel does this thing when he gets ready to do a fight
scene. He starts amping himself up. He starts going; ‘argh,
argh, argh’ It sounds a little weird saying this, and it
probably sounds a little weird hearing it, but it’s a bit
       intimidating.”
Bautista plays vertebrae-crushing henchman Mr Hinx to Christoph
Waltz’s mysterious arch villain in Craig’s fourth outing as 007,
which spans Mexico City, Rome, the Austrian Alps and Tangiers.
“I feel like the fan boy who snuck in,” he says, identifying
himself as an enthusiastic supporter of the British actor’s
       franchise-reinvigorating reboot.
“Daniel looks like he has been in a few fights. I like that
about him, because to me that makes him believable.”And in the
case of Mr Craig, appearances are not deceiving"
After spending hours with him in the stunt room, Bautista can
vouch for the actor’s athletic credentials “He’s a rugged guy"
“Sometimes you have to get a little more physical than you would
think (during fight routines) because you want it to come across
on film. So I am up for that. But it’s great to work for
somebody who is up for it as well. “I guess that’s how you
really get to know someone. When you are punching them in the
face — and then hugging them afterwards.”
Since Bautista towers over Craig by an imposing 20cm, he was
always going to have the upper hand in the fight sequences. His
size proved a disadvantage, however, in the high-speed chase
sequences. On location in Rome, the 46-year-old actor admits,
he had some major “compatibility issues” with the slick bronze
Jaguar C-X75 his character drives in the film.
Eagle-eyed observers will note that Mr Hinx is never actually
seen getting in and out of the streamlined sports car.
“God I hope nobody gets mad at me for giving away secrets,’’ he
says“Because it’s such a tight fit, I basically have to point my
bum at the seat and fall back into it. “It’s not a very graceful
       entrance or exit.”
In real life, Bautista has no such problems — since he drives a
Jeep.“I have had fast cars and motorcycles, but I always drive
them pretty slow, like under the speed limit. My friends always
       make fun of me.”
Although he straightened his life out some years ago, Bautista’s
own troubled youth — he was stealing cars at the age of 13 —
means that casting agents have no trouble imagining him as a bad
       guy.
Persuading them of his greater range as actor, he admits, is
more difficult, although rave reviews for his performance as
Drax the Destroyer in last year’s breakout hit Guardians of the
       Galaxy certainly helped.
“This past year was probably the first year I have actually been
able to make a living as an actor,’’ he says.“So it’s still very
surreal to me. It’s a dream come true. I know that sounds like a
       cliché but it really is.”
Although he is keen to stretch himself with comedic roles,
Bautista doesn’t feel he has anything to prove in the action
       arena.
“It’s weird because a lot of actors now are insisting on doing
their own stunts. I am the complete opposite. If I don’t think I
am qualified for a stunt, I will be the first guy to say it.
“And I am lucky enough to have a really great stunt man for this
film. He was my stunt man on Guardians, too. I want them to use
him as much as possible, because he makes me look good.”
