       Dean Malenko Remembers Eddie
By: ChrissiCalvert Date: November 13, 2015, 2:13 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
THREE of Eddie Guerrero’s closest amigos have marked the tenth
anniversary of his death by paying fond tributes to the
       much-loved WWE Hall of Famer.
Former WWE Triple Crown titleholder Guerrero passed away in a
Minneapolis hotel room from heart failure in one of sports
entertainment’s most shocking losses — but it is testament to
wrestling virtuoso’s charisma and athletic excellence that fans
still chant his name at WWE events a decade on.
Pals Chris Jericho, Chavo Guerrero and Dean Malenko explained
they wanted to share stories and memories of the spellbinding
star’s on the latest Talk is Jericho podcast.
And among hilarious tales from their friendships with the fiery,
passionate and loyal Eddie was an anecdote from current WWE
producer Malenko — who battled and teamed with Guerrero in
scintillating contests in Japan, ECW, WCW and WWE — about one
occasion in which ‘Latino Heat’ was unable to steal the show.
Indeed, he had the focus pinched from him by an
       over-enthusiastic fan in the crowd.
Recalling how their personal bond was so tight they would
actually bicker over each insisting to lose to the other during
their extended series of matches, Malenko said he and Eddie were
constantly striving to find new ways to delight the fans.
He said: “Eddie was always very entertaining. One really fun
night was in Rochester, New York and we were working together
       for WCW.
“We’d always try different things every night — see what worked,
what didn’t work. And we fell into something, some kind of move
       - and the place started going crazy.
“I grabbed Eddie in a rear chinlock and he goes: ‘Listen to the
       crowd! They’re going nuts!’
“I looked over my right shoulder into the audience and
everybody’s looking up into the tiered seating. There was a girl
who had lifted her shirt off and was well-endowed and
entertaining the menfolk there in the crowd. So I turned to
Eddie and said: ‘This is what they’re popping on, buddy.’
Malenko continued: “Now he gets hot! I have to hold him down
because he wants to get out of the ring and go to this girl:
‘What are you doing? We’re wrestling!’
“And I had to say: ‘Calm down, Eddie.’ He was so excited that
we’d tried something different and it got a reaction but it
       wasn’t us getting the reaction!”
Elaborating on the trust they had for one another as they put
their safety into each other’s hands, Malenko highlighted how
unconcerned Guerrero and he were about taking plaudits for
victories, preferring to prioritise the match and believing they
could progress further together — even as opponents.
He added: “Bottom line, you both win if you have a good match.
“Even though one guy gets his hand raised and the other guy
doesn’t, both win because at the end of the day when you walk
out of the ring nobody comes up to you and says: ‘Hey Dean, you
had a great match. Eddie you sucked.’
“It is: ‘Hey, you guys had hell of a match.’ And ‘you guys’,
meaning plural — both of you guys worked for the match.”
Malenko’s fondess for his old friend was also evident in his
recollection of a moment at October’s Hell in a Cell event when
Guerrero was recognised by the fans during the course of the WWE
       World Heavyweight championship match.
He said: “Seth [Rollins] had a match with Kane and and he hit a
frog splash off the top. And the crowd responded by chanting
Eddie’s name and it gave me goosebumps.
“Wrestling fans have never forgotten — and will never forget —
       Eddie Guerrero.”
