Chat with Daniel Bryan - May RETIRE if Not Cleared
By: ChrissiCalvert Date: October 5, 2015, 4:46 pm

Last week IGN interviewed WWE's Daniel Bryan in conjunction with
WWE 2K16 and asked when he'd be returning to the squared circle.
"So, we don't know," Bryan admitted. "I had a concussion in
April, and obviously they're very hyper-sensitive about
concussion stuff right now."
The former WWE World Heavyweight Champion insists he's feeling
fantastic, but not everyone agrees with that assessment. "One
neurologist who specializes in concussions - who was the
neurologist for the Super Bowl last year - cleared me with no
limitations. All my testing came back excellent. But the WWE's
medical doctor is skeptical, because of my history of
concussions and that sort of thing. So they will not clear me."
It's a bit of a conundrum that has Bryan caught in the middle.
"So now, we have two doctors: one saying no, one saying yes.
They're going to send me to a third doctor at some point in the
near future and that doctor will decide my fate."
Bryan clearly wants to step back in the ring as soon as
possible; wrestling is almost literally all he thinks about. "I
do a lot of gardening," he explained. "As I'm gardening, I'm
thinking about wrestling. I'm thinking about different
[things]-- like, it would be cool if I did this. And I watch
wrestling. And when I'm watching it I'm thinking, 'why didn't
they do this', or--'ooh! That sparked an idea.' Then I'm
thinking about that for a long time."
Alas, there's a possible "no" in Daniel Bryan's future. Which
would be especially tough for Bryan, who hasn't had any other
job since he was 20. "My last job was at a video store slash
tanning salon that is now defunct," he laughed. "But I've mostly
been doing wrestling since I was 18 years-old. It's hard for me
to envision doing something else until I'm ready."
What else is there for him to do, though? He's done it all, no?
"It's not even about being at the top as far as winning the
title, or even main eventing Wrestlemania. It's about are you
satisfied. And that's what we're all kind of searching for.
Like, why did Brett Favre still want to keep playing football
after he'd already won two Super Bowls? Because he loves
football, and he's not satisfied not playing football."
Daniel added, "It's the idea that that's how I express myself
creatively. It's like telling a painter 'you've done it all in
painting.' That's not the point. I like to paint. That's the
part that people don't understand...this is a part of me."
Would the "American Dragon" be willing to return to the indies
if he can't wrestle in the WWE?
"John Cena and I actually had this discussion. He said, 'if
something were to happen to you and the WWE, would you go back
to doing the indies?' Absolutely!"
His first stop? Mexico."I've gotten this sudden fascination with
the lore of lucha," Bryan laughed. The idea of doing a mask vs.
hair match is appealing to him, as is main eventing a CMLL
anniversary show. Still, he realizes that continuing to wrestle
when professionals advise him not to might not be the smartest
idea.
"The WWE doctor Joe Maroon [is] amazing and highly respected in
the concussion field, and if they send me to a third neurologist
who's also highly respected in the concussion field and they say
literally no...well, then is it really smart to go against two
doctors? I get all fired up...and then I'm like, maybe that's
not the best thing for me and my family going forward."
In that case, would he be willing to stay in the WWE in a
managerial or commentary position? "I think I would really enjoy
be a commentator," he told us. "One of the hard things for me
though would be being around it without actually doing it. I
mean, I would be under contract still, so it would be one of
those things where I would do whatever they tell me; I'm a good
employee! But it's one of those things where it's hard for
me...the idea of being around it and seeing people do it and not
being able to do it."
Here's hoping Daniel Bryan hears a big, giant "yes!" from
doctors soon.
