Chat with Ambrose. Talks 12 Rounds 3 & More
By: ChrissiCalvert Date: September 12, 2015, 2:55 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
When millions of pro wrestling fans watch Dean Ambrose on WWE
programming, what they see is an unpredictable anti-hero.
But there is no question that Ambrose is the hero as the star of
"12 Rounds 3: Lockdown", which will hit select theaters and be
       available on video-on-demand Friday.
The action flick sees Ambrose play the role of police detective
Shaw, who returns to active duty after the death of his partner.
He then becomes the target of crooked cops at his precinct when
he uncovers evidence implicating them in a murder.
“It’s really about as fast-paced as a movie can go without being
too much,” explains the 29-year-old Ambrose. “I don’t think it’s
over the top but it’s non-stop motion for the entire time. From
the second the movie starts, you’re right in the business. It
hits the ground running and doesn’t slow down. That’s definitely
my vibe, any time you see Dean Ambrose on any kind of screen
you’re in for a lot of unpredictability and a lot of action.”
The Lionsgate and WWE Studios production thriller is the third
installment in the Lockdown franchise. The other featured WWE
superstars: John Cena starred in 2009’s "12 Rounds" and Randy
Orton was the lead in the 2013 release "12 Rounds 2: Reloaded".
Ambrose (real name Jonathan Good) admits that he leaned on his
fellow actors since this was his debut on the big screen. And he
gives a lot of credit to director Stephen Reynolds for being
able to make a big, action packed movie despite not having a
       huge budget.
“You can really see how much his expertise paid off in the movie
because it looks so cool,” says Ambrose. “It doesn’t look like
an old, cheesy action movie where they’re relying on big stunts
and exploding helicopters and car chases. The whole movie is
contained in one building, a big, giant police station. So it’s
not unlike 'Die Hard' and you’ll get that comparison.”
Ambrose definitely has a wild side, especially when it comes to
his in-ring “Lunatic Fringe” character, which he admits is an
amped of version of who he really is. That side wasn’t going to
let him slow down when it came to the stunts and fights on the
       movie set.
“I had so much fun doing the fight scenes and as much as they
would let me do because I wanted to do everything,” admits
Ambrose. “Obviously, they wanted the stunt guy to do the more
dangerous stuff. I’m so used to doing so much worse things in
one take on WWE television. I was like, ‘I can do that. I can
jump off this and jump over an exploding table.’"
Ambrose was definitely surprised when he was approached about
       being in a movie.
“I immediately said yes, I am interested,” recalls Ambrose. “Of
course. I was like f*** yeah! It took me a second and they said
yeah, we have this project with ’12 Rounds’ which has been a
great franchise for us. I was like wait, you want me to be in a
movie? Yeah I’ll do that! Are you kidding me? No further
       questions. Sign me up.”
He admits that the opportunity wasn’t on his radar and his focus
was on the day-to-day task of being a WWE superstar.
“When you’re on the road with the WWE, you’re so wrapped up in
this whirlwind of making 300 towns a year and wrestling every
night that I wasn’t looking too far into the future,” he
explains. “But if the opportunity was in front of me, I was
definitely going to take it. If I got hit by a bus tomorrow, I
get to say I was in a movie. I had a sense they thought it would
be something I would be good at and maybe it’s another avenue to
       pursue after my career.”
Even more surprising was that he wasn’t going to just appear in
the movie, but would be front and center as the central figure.
“I didn’t realize I would be in the lead role until a little
later and I got more information,” Ambrose remembers. “That’s
when I realized oh, I’m not just going to be in the background
or some cameo just to have a WWE guy in there. I knew this was a
       big challenge.”
Ambrose took some acting classes in Los Angeles as he prepared
for the role, but he quickly realized that he was more ready
than he thought since “WWE is like showbiz boot camp”.
“We learn a little bit of everything behind and in front of the
camera,” he explains. “We do our own stunts. I’m doing some more
dangerous stuff on a weekly basis than professional stunt men
are doing. I found that I was unique prepared. You’ll find that
all WWE performers when they go on to any television show or set
of any kind, we’re more prepared that we get credit for. We
       don’t get enough credit.”
Now, Ambrose is fully focused on the WWE and will team with
Roman Reigns and a mystery partner against The Wyatt Family at
the "Night of Champions" event which will air live on the WWE
       Network Sept. 20.
The Cincinnati native is thrilled to be a part of the current
generation of WWE talent that is being showcased on a weekly
       basis.
“There’s so much excitement with guys trying to get on 'Monday
Night Raw'. There’s a lot of excitement with the NXT brand and
there’s just so much young talent. Our whole generation has come
up and taken over the spots like myself, Roman Reigns, Seth
Rollins, Bray Wyatt, Cesaro, Luke Harper. We’re main-eventing
every night in all these towns 300 nights a year. The bigger
stars only come in for the bigger shows and so forth. People
always want to know when Sting is coming back? When’s the Rock
coming back? Brock Lesnar only works a select amount of dates.
“We’re out there carrying the load 300 days a year. It’s really
exciting for that group of guys, for us to have taken over the
helm of the company. There’s a lot of energy there. There’s a
work ethic there and we’re putting on incredible performances
everywhere we go. There’s definitely a lot of excitement right
       now.”
