Will TNA DO a positive gay Storyline?
By: Mr Invincible UK Date: June 17, 2014, 6:57 pm

Hey guys,
I know the latest TNA storyline may start to smack of a "Trish
Stratus / Mickie james 'Psycho' Storyline" on WWE many years
before (the company famously dubbed as 'over there' by Mr
Kennedy) But I REALLY would like to see a genuinely positive gay
female storyline (And not done as some tacky porno either)
between Brittany & Maddison Rayne,
I know Wrestling Promotions have their gay audiences watching
too. I've not seen a decent female love story without it
looking creepy or giving lesbianism a bad name, and maybe
perhaps TNA is being taped in mostly bible belt venues that may
see it as a threat. But, as British folk go, or others around
the world, how do we care?
I see it as harmless and TNA have an opportunity to show a
storyline that doesn't have to end up looking 'wrong'..there's
nothing weird, or creepy in being gay or Bi, or whatever you
want in a day and age where sexuality labels are now blurred.
I originally thought that the TNA brand were for the over 18's,
while WWE were marketed towards the younger age spectrum…I'm not
even sure myself where TNA want to be right now, which
demographic they are aiming for..
But still I think TNA could do a female love storyline without
offending everyone.

Sadly [member=556]Mr Invincible UK[/member] I doubt that will
happen. TNA has an odd relationship to women; women can't
possible have a match that lasts longer than 8 minutes. They can
only win by roll ups. They can not possibly have a better match
than anyone else on the card. So having an LBGT storyline that
makes sense is logical and not there for titillation just isn't
going to happen.
As we have moved from what appears to be one stalker storyline
to another, which I am glad to see they have calmed down
somewhat, they really don't have the writing talent or the time.
Pro Wrestling is a blunt instrument in story telling at the best
of times and when you get to sensitive subjects there are just
to many people to offend. While I agree with you it would make
sense to appeal to every demographic, looking back at the
history of wrestling promotion says; don't trust 'em as far as
you can throw them.

I guess it depends on the storyline. One would argue why any of
the talent would need to have their sexual orientation be the
subject of a feud, but then again, Adrian Street showed one way
it could be done. Then again, different times.

Interesting interview with Adrian Street.

As much as I think Adrian Street was a true innovator, and a
great man, I do think his act wouldn't swing in this day and age
because it is clearly offensive to many people. I was so pleased
that they cut and run on the lesbian angle and have turned it
into something more palatable. It's just not sensible to run a
story based on sexual orientation at the moment.
TNAFan was right, the OVW one was really well done. However OVW
are more beholden to sponsors and its the South they really
can't go to far. They used those boundaries well and pushed the
envelope at the right time. It also helped that the women in OVW
at the time were the key draw for the company.
To me wrestling is to much of a blunt instrument to tell those
stories. Especially when TNA are so blunt, especially when it
comes to women.

TNA going lesbian would be... really bad. I mean, they managed
to make the whole Beautiful People thing subtexty, ditto for the
Brooke/Tara thing but... anything none subtext done by TNA,
especially at the moment would rankle.
I mean, okay, I'd love to see it because hello? out and proud
over here but not yet and not with those writers. Hell, I don't
even trust my own team to work it, I sure don't trust TNA.
