Sheriff Lonestar's PPV of the Week; Sayonara Taiyo
Two weeks ago Natsuki☆Taiyo retired and thankfully someone
at Daily motion was speedy enough to capture the broadcast, live
I might add on Samurai TV, featured the Kawasaki high flyer's
last match and a full card of fun and frolics from the Stardom
       crew.
Yoshiko, Act Yasukawa, Kairi Hojo & Koguma vs Alpha Female,
Kyoko Kimura, Tomoka Nakagawa & Danshoku Dino
So the opener is an eight man elimination tag, featuring those
evil Monster Gun Types Alpha Female and Kyoko Kimura teaming up
with Oz Academy and Shimmer regular Tomoka Nakagawa and um well
Japanese wrestling's favourite pervert Danshoku Dino. Dino was
an odd choice seeing as his characters is very gay indeed and
usually out for sexual kicks from the man on man action in DDT.
He is also trying to cut a path in a more serious manner in All
Japan as he and his friends started out in the AJPW dojo and are
now trying to win an AJWP title in a subtle invasion storyline.
His character is a bit, as one of my friends, would call it
“rapey” and while rape jokes are never funny, it does come off
as even weirder when he is facing up against women. Thankfully
he keeps everything in his trunks. On the other side of things,
Yoshiko is well into her face turn now. It was kind of forced
mind, she wrestles heel for every other company in Japan, but
she has become exceptionally popular it is just weird to see her
smiling and not flipping the bird. What is incredible is how she
has developed her character since JD Star were she was a dress
wearing “pretty girl” despite the fact she was twenty pounds
heavier than her contemporaries in the company and was clearly
uncomfortable in that role. Now she is a monster's monster and
can do what she does best. Destroying folks. Speaking of
destroying, Alpha Female is excellent here she has come along so
much in the last year and her Lariat clothesline is now a thing
to behold, nearly taking Hojo's head off. For those of you
disappointed with her short TNA run earlier this year this match
is an abject lesson in why she is better off in Japan (aside
from earning more money, having more creative freedom and having
more direction on her character). If she tried doing half those
things to Velvet Sky she would have got sent home. The Japanese
girls (despite being lighter than the TNA roster) largely say
bring it on. Then again they might be retiring at 30. Life is a
gamble I guess. Koguma is just outstanding, and has had an
incredible rookie year. Her mat work and mix of MMA with
wrestling has really been a bonus meaning she can ground and
pound veterans and look believable. Hojo and Yasukawa do their
thing very well indeed, Hojo being the sweet face high energy
flyer. Act being the largely not quite sober pirate fighter. A
great energetic opener. Nakagawa is the only one who really
doesn't get a clear shot at her thing, but there are plenty of
great matches she's had in Oz Academy this year for you to find
       on youtube.
       STARDOM Championship Match
Hiroyo Matsumoto, Miho Wakizawa & Mayu Iwatani (c) vs Kaori
Yoneyama, Hatsuhinode Kamen & Sayaka Obihiro
Ah, the Stardom Trio's Champions continue on their comedy route
of entertainment by trying to dump as many scrubbing brushes as
possible in the ring as possible and flattening their opponents
into them. While I had my doubts on the legs for this idea, its
been sixth months now and the fans still love it. Kaori
Yoneyama, Hatsuhinode Kamen & Sayaka Obihiro don't really get
going in this one, despite some wonderfully defensive wrestling.
The match is all about the brush, which is cool, but under that
comedy façade lie three great wrestlers. Matsumoto especially
who Alpha Female listed in her top five in the world and has
been a Shimmer Tag team champion. Iwatani is still growing as a
wrestler and with these two veterans looking after her, I see
great things, but I do hope they get serious again soon.
       World of Stardom Championship Match
Io Shirai © vs Takumi Iroha
Shirai is awesome, there are not one word other than that in the
English language to express how good she is right now. She has
had a phenomenal year as champion and I hope she keeps the belt
as long as there are viable challengers from Stardom and from
elsewhere. She is currently my pick for “Best in the World” of
any gender. Iroha is just over one year in the business and she
is getting world title shots, that says it all really. She has
child prodigy written all over her and there hasn't been a
breakthrough wrestler like this in Joshi since her mentor Nanae
Takahashi. Most Joshi wrestlers, like most wrestlers in Japan
spend their first year staring at lights and while she has had
the aid of a thinish Stardom roster to enable her push, she has
performed so strongly elsewhere she is a lock for a major title
run. This match is an a great example, though obviously not as
good as her title defences against mat veterans like Takahashi,
Arisa Nakajimi, Sendai Girls Legend Meiko Satomura, it was still
great and Iroha was by no means carried by the champ. Well worth
       the watch.
       Retirement Bout
       Natsuki☆Taiyo vs Nanae Takahashi
This is Taiyo's swan song and if your gonna go out in style,
there is no better choice than Stardom's Ace. This is a tough as
nails emotional roller coaster ride as Natsuki attempts to take
Nanae's arm home as a retirement present and Takahashi is
equally tenacious about Taiyo's leg. It has everything you
expect from a Joshi classic, mat wrestling, MMA style, brawling
and this being Taiyo lots of flying. Her in ring style has been
high impact and high risk, which is probably the contributing
factor to her retirement at 30. However she lets it all hang out
one last time. In the old school Joshi tradition she finishes
with a song. Its no good being just a great wrestler in Joshi,
if you want to be a star you have to sing as well and the match
ending is as entertaining as the match itself as the Stardom
roster rush the ring and dance along with Taiyo. The ease and
friendship bleeds through in this moment, Stardom are a tight
crew and want nothing more than success for the company. Judging
by the full house and live TV they are doing a great job.
       Natsuki☆Taiyo's Retirement Ceremony
This is pomp an pageantry at its most friendly in Japan. They
all came out for Taiyo, including Manami Toyota and Bison
Kimura, fellow AJW graduates of Taiyo's. The ceremony rounds off
with an emotional speech from Taiyo's original AJW and MMA
trainer Animal Haguchi. Back in the day Taiyo begna her career
as a low centre of gravity shoot specialist, and it gave her a
fearless edge over her opponents as she moved into the high
flying style that would become her trade mark.
This set of videos (sadly Daily Motion will only let me do them
in separate posts) is all the fun of the Joshi fair and is a
wonderfully emotive celebration of a young star's career. I hope
she has a great retirement and enjoys the fruits of her labours.
I know I have for a long time now.
       Enjoy the show.
