Sheriff Lonestar's PPV of the Week; The Rise of A Double
By: SheriffLonestar Date: June 7, 2014, 12:59 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Do you remember the last time TNA really clicked? The last time
it really had a card that made you think yes they are going to
be great? When they really turned heads with the crowd chanting
continuously through the whole card? I do and that is today's
subject for PPV of the week.
The Destination X PPV has celebrated the X Division for years
now the 2011 edition being no different. The fact that this was
the last one that truly showcased everything the division has to
offer is a sign of how far its star has fallen in the company.
They couldn't run this show now without help from the
Heavyweight and Women's division. However this card was as hot
as it gets and they literally haven't produced anything as good
since. The storyline going into the card was Hulk Hogan and Eric
Bischoff's decision to destroy the X Division in a storyline
sense as heel authority figures, sending Abyss after the X
Division title and renaming it the Xtreme Title. Having changed
the six sided ring some months before and suffered a fan revolt
of the highest order, they realised that maybe their best bet
was to go after everything TNA fans held dear which was a
sensible narrative decision in the long run, but meant them
running down half their roster in the short run. The Hogan
Bischoff era was full of these step backs and steps forward on
and off throughout the whole Hogan Bischoff Era. For once though
it produced a card of aesthetic beauty.
       Kazarian vs Samoa Joe
The show opened with two stalwarts of the X Division and two of
its highest profile champions. The match is a great opener and
explosive in power. It shows that when Joe is motivated he can
go with the best of them and that Kazarian, his long recent
comedy run not withstanding is such a good mat and aerial
wrestler. Kazarian certainly didn't do anything as good as this
in the rest of his run with the company. A great match with a
great finish building momentum for the card well.
       Doug Williams vs Mark Haskins
Haskins should have been on an up hill struggle here. However
his natural charm and work ethic stood him in good stead. When
your wrestling a guy who even as a heel is as respected and
loved like Doug Williams, you an in serious danger of being shut
out by the crowd when you haven't had enough exposure, however
Haskins held in there and produced a great match with a lot of
old school British mat work. Doug was Doug, his usual excellent
self. If there is such a thing as The British Arn Anderson, Doug
Williams is it. Methodical but interesting and logical and
spectacular when he needed to be. It was a good idea giving
Haskins his first PPV match with someone he knew so well, and it
showed. Haskins is a way better prospect now than he was then
and it is a shame that TNA never saw the potential in him that
he had, but that's the story of the Hogan Bischoff Era. They
didn't tend the garden of what they had preferring the field
       over the horizon.
Generation Me (The Young Bucks) vs Eric Young and Shark Boy
What have we learned since this bout? Well The Bucks have gone
on to be arguably the best Tag Team in the world and EY has
become a World's Heavyweight Champion in a game of title pass
the parcel as the company steadily spins into oblivion behind
him. Shark Boy is still Shark Boy and had some nice outings on
One Night Only, but that's about been his highlight reel. This
is the usual level of EY inspired lunacy, good but not great.
This was really a waste of The Bucks time and its nice they have
gone on to bigger and better things if this is all anyone could
come up with for them. The only dud match on the card is made
memorable by The Bucks natural work aesthetic.
       Ultimate X
Amazing Red, Robbie E, Shannon Moore and Alex Shelley
This is a lot more like it. The signature match of the X
division which was as innovative as ever. Even Robbie E whose
great strength is putting other people over was on top form here
this night. Full of everything you would expect, it didn't flow
like some of these matches have. Amazing Red is, well Amazing.
He is the high wire lynch pin of the match, while Shelley tells
the story. Moore too has some great things to offer. It builds
up nicely for what happens next on the card.
Jerry Lynn vs Rob Van Damn
The build of this match of course centered around the matches
this pair had in ECW in 1999, was it as good? No of course not.
The story telling may have been better, but both had lost a step
by this point and clearly were nowhere near as motivated as they
were when they were trying to break the main event ceiling in
ECW. Like I said though the better pacing of this match than
their earlier encounters does mean there is a story here unlike
back in the day when they tried to cram every spot they could
into twenty minutes. The popular opinion is that RVD phoned it
in his TNA run, however much like times of old when Jerry Lynn
was in there with him he truly did rise to the occasion.
Jack Evans, Austin Aries, Zema Ion, Low Ki - Four Way Match
If you like spots, and you like action this match is for you. In
fact you would be hard pressed to find anything better. Four
guys looking to get over and put each other over in search of a
contract and it worked for at least two of them in this match.
Low Ki and Jack Evans didn't get signed as we know but they did
go on to bigger and better things; Low Ki got signed with NJPW
and became their Junior Heavyweight Champion, Evans went back to
AAA and Dragon Gate where he is still a mainstay. This match
though features what now seems to be the inevitable rise of A
Double. This was the perfect platform for him to shine not that
anyone else took their foot off the gas. The crowd are so hot
for this as well, just what they came to see and these four
       stole the show.
       Abyss © vs Brian Kendrick
This was the key storyline match, and while it wasn't a great
showcase for Kendrick, it told the story and got the job done. A
reminder of how effective Abyss can be as a monster heel when
used properly. Also before he started slowing down because of
his age, a move to the X Division meant he could leave the
barbwire behind for a while but this is an ugly match for a card
that was supposed to feature full on wrestling nirvana.
       AJ Styles vs Christopher Daniels
A signature card needs a signature feud and its interesting that
this was the main event. It topped Abyss Kendrick for a draw for
sure, but its what TNA has been about for a long time. As the
highlight package proved, who was the bigger of the two? An
intriguing selling point and back then it was still something to
       look forward too.
All in all a great card, a few misses, but hey this is TNA
folks, but much more to shout about than to decry. Unfortunately
this card is incomplete on youtube so I have added the missing
       matches form Daily Motion.
       Enjoy the show.

Its all a bit relative though, sometimes they don't want to be
signed. Jack would possibly have received more exposure in
Dragon Gate and AAA and definitely more money.

That is true some guys are happen to work the Indys because they
have control over their own bookings and they can make More
money . Very good read and this was one of the top ppvs of that
year tbh AA was not that good at the event but he has showed the
world that he can be a main event player
