Sheriff Lonestar's PPV of the Week; Danny Boy Collins In Profile
By: SheriffLonestar Date: May 24, 2014, 1:18 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
This week as a change of pace after a few weeks of good old
fashioned Joshi violence, but by no means slowing down. Today we
look at one of the best wrestlers on the British scene of the
       1980's; Danny Boy Collins.
Danny emerged onto a crowded lighter men's scene in 1983 and
would have an incredibly active and varied career over the next
thirty years (he retired in 2013). He is perhaps best remembered
by older fans though for his TV run in the lighter divisions on
ITV and its World of Sports programming.
Making his TV début in 1984 he was pushed into a feud with “Cry
Baby” Jim Breaks, no better place to start. As a British heel
Breaks was about perfect, also partly down to his hell
mannerisms that were so incredibly good he gets less play for
his technical wrestling ability which was actually just as spell
binding as his contemporaries; Johnny Saint, Vic Faulkner and
Bert Royal. So really no better place to start. The feud built
around Jim's British Welterweight Title, which Danny would take
in 1984, this is a return bout. This match has some innovative
submission offence. Jim's Back Hammer Cross Face early in the
match being something I've never seen before or since. This
really is Jim Breaks at his unlovable best, but Danny is awesome
too. Showing the fire that would be his hallmark through out his
career, he had chance here to showcase his talent in front of a
national audience at still a very young age. There would be
great things to follow, but when you think about it he was
already at the top of the British tree where could he go next?
Well he could go far, already a main eventer he was only 17
years old. Also when was the last time you saw a ref bump that
       actually made sense?

Look everyone its Dickie Davis' beautiful hair! Those greying
locks greeted us every Saturday for years as World of Sport was
the place to be on Saturday afternoons. This clip lovingly
restored from VHS to youtube wonderment features the classic
British style of match that was the staple of Saturday afternoon
wrestling. Two faces, mat classic, why do you need anything
else? To today's fans it maybe seen a bit underwhelming because
where is the heat? But Steve Grey and Danny Collins are two
master practitioners and to hold the crowd they didn't need
anything else. The crowd itself is typical of the time, sat
quietly in rapt appreciation. They knew their wrestling and they
knew they were seeing two of the very, very best. On Botchamania
a while back there was a clip from a match between “Scrap Iron”
Adam Pearce and Kevin Steen where they actually went and
confronted a fan in the middle of that match who was chanting
“boring” just because they were actually having a wrestling
match, to the wild support of the rest of the crowd who were
actually enjoying it. Thankfully for us in the UK this type of
match is a long way from dead, it still happens at halls up and
down the country because while Americanised and Japanesified as
the product has become, some people still love wrestling for
wrestling's sake, and this is a prime example of why I liked
wrestling back in the day. Quiet tension is no bad thing, a
sporting contest nothing more it is a wonder to watch. Highly
recommended is all I really want to add.

Danny didn't spend his entire career as a face, he turned heel
in the post ITV era. He also travelled a lot, this match where
he teams with Dick Togo, Funaki & Shiryu vs. Super Delfin,
Otsuka, Gran Hamada & Super Astro comes from Michinoku Pro the
highly influential Japanese company that effected everything in
pro wrestling throughout the 1990s and continues to effect
wrestling today. The Japanese Lucha style always had a mix of
British mat wrestling in there, we tend to forget that none of
that high flying would would have meant anything unless they
spent some time on the mat first. Not that Danny was short on
aerials, quite the contrary. He fit into the M-Pro philosophy
perfectly, and as the small company was doing big things so was
he. M-Pro ended up sending wrestlers to NJPW, AJW, ECW and of
course the WWF, Kaientai is still going strong these days as
K-Dojo, Taka Michinku's independent promotion as is of course
M-Pro. TNA's X Division would not exist without the history of
M-Pro impressing that state of the art hybrid style of mat work
and incredible aerials manoeuvres on the world. Due to the
nature of the eight man tag we obviously don't see much of him,
but it does offer his style of the time in short doses. He was
moving away from the British scene a lot in these days. Working
for Otto Wanz's CWA, tagging with Drew MacDonald. He moved on to
WAW, Ricky and Sarya Knight's promotion on Norwich where he was
a regular trainer at their school, home school of course to The
UK Hooligans Roy “Zebra Kid” Knight, Zack Knight and current WWE
Diva's Champion Paige and a school of hard knock's style that
       Danny helped mould.

If you want to find out more about Danny, he is interviewed in
this new documentary; Supermen: a Story of British Wrestling,
which I will include the link for. His career remains,
mercurial, well travelled like his colleagues William Regal,
Robbie Brookside and Doc Dean, while being slightly older giving
him one foot firmly in the World of Sports camp, whil still
making a large impression on today's ever growing wrestling
       scene in the UK.

He now runs his own wrestling school and you can follow him on
twitter @collins_dann, please do his insights and commentary are
       wonderful things.

Thanks 01332Fan. I do do the TNA ones when I can find them,
there aren't many free ones around and that's in the rules it
       has to be free.
I would also say aside from one match this weeks editions is
       entirely British.
