Sheriff Lonestar's PPV of the Week; Over The Top

I have been quite vocal recently about TNA's lack of discipline
when it comes to Gimmick Matches, there are a few reasons for
this. One it devalues gimmick matches and makes them not special
and this don't mean anything. Two, its a danger to the talent
and their long term health, and three they just can't do it
properly any more. Aside from Gunner and James Storm the gimmick
matches in TNA haven't really brought any more light on the
company than they would have done if they had been regular
bouts. But one of the biggest reasons is I have seen it all
before. TNA's watered down hardcore heritage doesn't reflect its
roots, and where it all comes from are two companies ECW and
FMW, both notably no longer with us. I have talked at length
about ECW and FMW before but this week's PPV of the week
highlights the length FMW would go to in making matches that
where awesome in their ludicrosity. The video, which will be
linked at the bottom of this article as always, is “FMW World of
FMW Vol. 4 Street Fight Tag Team Tournament 1992” right at the
very beginning of FMW's experimentation of with ludicrous
stipulations, none more so that the opener. You've heard of
straight to video films right? Well this was a straight to video
wrestling match. Tiger Jeet Sing vs Atushi Ohnita in their
“Jungle Exploding Barbed wire Death Match”, there was no live
audience for this show, it was taken out on to an island set up
for the cameras only and actually the stipulations for FMW were
quite tame. Just exploding barb wire, I guess the fact its in a
jungle makes it more dangerous, but yeah it makes for
interesting viewing and pays homage to Terry Funk (one of
Ohnita's heroes and mentors) and Jerry Lawler's empty arena
match in the Memphis Coliseum. The match is what it is, but if
your squeamish its going to get a lot worse before this video is
through so you may want to fast forward to Combat Toyoda vs
Megumi Kudo which is quite the pure wrestling match. The women
of FMW where often the saving grace of their cards given that
they could wrestle a pure match and make things go in street
fights. They brought light relief from the blood loss. This is
the opening of the card that featured for Ohnita vs Singh with
tag partners Sambo Asako and Singh Junior respectively and shows
how they ramped up the violence from match to match until the
blow off which appears later on this highlight volume. Other
notable wrestlers on this card include Gregory Veritchev, a
Russian martial arts expert who began working pro matches in
this era as the Iron Curtain well and truly came down.
Moving onto the next highlighted card, this time headlined by
Ohnita and Singh in an actual stadium setting with actual people
there. Its a rematch of their original, but what is happening
further down the card is interesting too. The six man features
Horace boulder (Hulk Hogan's nephew), Rick Bogner (who played
the Hall of Fame bound Razor Ramon in its “fake” Jim Ross
inspired character development that not one misses in the WWE)
and Mike “Gladiator” Awesome latterly of ECW,WCW and WWE fame,
this is where he got his big break. The best match on the card
though is Megumi Kudo and Combat Toyoda vs Bull Nakano and Akira
Hokuto, four of the toughest women who ever lived in one match,
it will get your attention for sure. No trimmings either just
double tough bragging rights contest. Then we have the blow off
between Sing and Ohnita, which quite frankly is the most selfish
performance by any wrestler ever from Singh, who no sells
everything, and then takes a bump into the exploding barb wire,
a DDT AND a Powerbomb and kicks out on 3. Yes Tiger. When I read
Mick Foley's biography and he described Tiger as “getting over
by taking” and didn't really fully understand it till that
moment. Worth a watch for that alone.
The final portion of the video is the Street Fight Tag Team
Tournament which ends with a “Barbed wire Double Hell Death
Match Street Fight” Final. As is usual I will refrain from
giving away the results of the tournament matches, they are all
street fights hence the cowboy boots and jeans rather than
wrestling attire. Yes when you see the exploding double hell
death matches they actually have DQ rules in place.
So really this is the reason why I don't like gimmick matches
any more. I've seen them all, and now a days I can sit back and
enjoy a pure athletic contest much better just because I know
what everyone’s capable of and I like the fact people don't have
to literally kill themselves to get over. There is also the
point, no wrestling company will ever get away with any of this
ever again, ever.
