Ah the Battle Royal, so simple and yet so entertaining. So full
of opportunity and excitement and yet so often a big bag of
rumbling tosh. Time to have a look at how things are done in
Battle Royals all over the world.
What inspired this little junket down memory lane was one of
Japan's Stirling new traditions. Every New Year's Eve Kaientai
(TAKA Michinoku's promotion), K-Dojo (His other promotion)
Michinoku Pro (His first promotion he worked for) comedy and
aerial experts DDT, hardcore warriors Big Japan Pro Wrestling,
Freedoms and a few other independent companies have their annual
New Year's Eve show at Korkuean Hall. In 2010 looking to give
the fans something special they offered up this 108 entrant
Battle Royal. I say entrant because its not 108 guys, but 108
characters. So long they had to have the referees change in
shifts from each company, the entrants come down in intervals of
30 seconds because obviously you couldn't fit 108 guys into the
ring at the same time. Pat Patterson has a lot to answer for. So
does Keiji Mutoh whose Great Muta character has been such a hit
now many wrestlers have multiple personalities. So in this match
you get to see the many faces of some of them. You also get to
see battling robots, non wrestling women, referees, hardcore
legends, even DDT's super over Hulk Hogan-a-like blow up doll
and the best Shawn Michaels impression ever. As a not you should
remember that Japanese Battle Royal rules mean that pin falls
also count. It is of course insanity from start to finish. Guys
having to wear two outfits in case they get called for matches
after eliminations, non wrestling valets carrying whips with
them, the countdown to midnight interrupting the match. Its just
some old school comedy fun and while I wouldn't say it packs 'em
in, its a nice antidote to the seriousness Japan takes its
wrestling. They do want to be entertained after all.

This is is how we used to do it in the old days. This is a bit
weird, a time limit? In a Battle Royal? Are you on Drugs? It does
speed up the pace mind. And nice perms on the ladies in the
front row clearly taking a break from Woman's Realm. Safe to say
that Danny Collins is the only one anybody was to hear of in the
future of British Wrestling, now offering seminars on the World
of Sports style. Sadly none of the others where world shakers,
but it does have the worst finish to any battle royal ever.
       Ever.

When Shimmer first started back in 2005 they used to do their
tapings over a weekend and still do it in the same place some 8
years later. They of course had a ring and they used the same
crew as Ring of Honor for their tapings as they where
financially linked with the company. Of course you have to test
everything to make sure things work. So as a treat with the Ring
of Honor crew who happened to be near by kicking around reading
to watch the show, hey why not? So one of the best rosters in
indie wrestling at the time had some fun. Mat Sydal (Evan Bourne
in WWE), Alex Shelley, Delirious (ROH's current lead booker),
Austin Aries, Claudio Casitgnoli (Antonio Cesaro) all having
some fun on a weekend off which must be the best dark match
       ever.

No coverage of battle royals would be complete without Giant
Haystacks who patented the “stand still and let the fools hit
me” approach to the whole set of shenanigans. Worth its purely
for the wonderment of how they managed to get millions of
viewers with this every week; Battle Royals that last ten
minutes! Large sweaty men who do nothing whatsoever! Standing
still brought to an art form! Thrilling stuff. While I do love
old school British wrestling there was always this sense they
weren't trying hard enough. This is it. Some of these guys can
actually go but are quite frankly wasted here. One guy has the
ring name Pratt. Need I say more? Sadly he did not get his own
       action figure.

GAEA Japan was one of the most realistic and popular promotions
in Joshi history. Even they couldn't resist a comedy battle
royal though. Here some of the greatest wrestlers of all time,
have a laugh. Worth pointing out at least three of these women
had five star matches in their careers. As you can see there is
only one face and its on an SSU show; Lioness Asuka's own shows
featuring her heel stable Super Stars Unit.

So there you go a flick around some of the best and worst battle
royals in history and from all over the world. The match is now
seen more as a comedy aside rather than something meaty, maybe
the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal will change that at
Wrestlemania and bring it back to prominence as a more often
used tool. Not to often mind, we already have the Royal Rumble.
Speaking of Andre, we can't do Battle Royal's without Andre so
here is the set up for Wrestlemania 3 and the first meeting
between Hulk Hogan and Andre The Giant since Andre's heel turn.
This folks is how you use the Battle Royal properly, proving
some superiority while still offering some doubts to supremacy.
The first of great performance of Andre's last year of great
       performances.

Hope you enjoy the matches have fun till next week.
