FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Hair Vs Hair

First Impressions - IWA Hair Vs Hair All Japan Women.
Okay, so first off, Hello again! I'm so sorry I haven't done one
of these in a while. I've not exactly been feeling too stellar.
On the upside we should have another one of these coming up
later as I have a 'film' of Wrestling to watch as well. From
then on, I'll be trying to catch up on some TNA stuff.
I'll also hopefully eventually be able to share some of my
thoughts on DVDs I own.
Onto the match then:
This is Manami Toyota vs Toshiyo Yamada.
As per usual I'm skipping all the pre-match interviews so we can
get right into the action (plus, I don't speak Japanese so...
yes).
The opening wrestling looks almost Westernised, I'm not sure if
we took the lead from them or they took the lead from us though?
Anyone who does know is welcome to comment.
Okay, I'm sorry but this just looks like the kind of wrestling I
see on TNA/WWE footage. I'm not saying it's bad... it's just
very typically 'wrestling' style of wrestling.
Like the kind you see when you ask a kid to draw a 'wrestling
hold' sort of thing.
Okay, so... the hold where she hangs the girl from her shoulders
BY A LEG? That just looks... so wrong. Dangerous too.
Also, the girl in the black leotard looks sort of like a
pissed-off gymnast. The girl in purple looks a little more like
I've seen before in Japanese wrestling.
That being said, I am enjoying the outfits.... even if I did
kinda giggle at first. (What? grumpy gymnasts are funny!)
What the hell do they call the move where they stand on the
girls legs and pull their arms up??? That also just looks...
wierd.
I mean, it's impressive... but it just looks really strange.
... Sooo the hair gets taken from whoever loses? Seems legit.

Women's wrestling in Japan was a development of the American
women Mildred Burke and Mae Young who went over in the 30's. It
didn't get into a full on recognizable form until the late 60's.
They training systems have become the standard, The Performance
Centre is basically a Japanese Dojo displaced to Florida.
I find it interesting that you say "its the kind of thing you
would see in WWE". Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer fame was
always high on these two wrestlers and described them as "at
least 15-20 years ahead of their time". I would agree you would
see the style today, Daniel Bryan is very influenced by Yamada.
Except for not many people could keep up this kind of pace for
35 minutes.
Okay, so... the hold where she hangs the girl from her shoulders
BY A LEG? That just looks... so wrong. Dangerous too.
Well not that dangerous or I guess she wouldn't use it. It was
one of her main submission holds.
Also, the girl in the black leotard looks sort of like a
pissed-off gymnast. The girl in purple looks a little more like
I've seen before in Japanese wrestling.
Girl in Purple - Toshiya Yamamda, Girl in Black - Manami Toyota
widely considered to be the greatest in ring performer of all
time, male or female. She is now in her 40s and can still pull a
better match off the top of her head than the TNA roster could
in a month of Sundays. She currently tags with Mike Quackenbush
and Jigsaw (Rubix to TNA fans) in Chikara.
That being said, I am enjoying the outfits.... even if I did
kinda giggle at first. (What? grumpy gymnasts are funny!)

That would be The Surfboard, you don't see it in the mainstream
very often, but on the indies, women's wrestling, Japan and
especially in the UK its considered a big spot move. This is
because mainstream wrestling sucks a lot of the time lol.
... Sooo the hair gets taken from whoever loses? Seems legit.
Its Japan ALL stipulations are adhered to, loser must retire?
Then the loser must retire. That way the fans believe in you
when you try and do something.
