Sheriff Lonestar's PPV of the Week; Sting in the Tail

       ---------------------------------------------------------
Regular readers of this website will know I am quite the fan of
three women who are prolific in the world of Joshi. They would
be, Kana, Io Shirai and Mio Shirai, The Triple Tails. They have
over the last few years grown to prominence in the field of
women's wrestling through their hard work dedication, love of
angles and super stiff matches that have stolen the show on many
of the cards they have been put on. They now all reside in
different places. Mio Shirai is the World of Stardom Champion
and calls Stardom her home. Io Shirai is well installed as one
of the lead heels of Oz Academy, and Kana has spent the best
part of last year as JWP's Openweight Champion. Every once in a
while though they take a break from working for other people,
call up some friends and run their own shows. They feature some
interesting takes on how Pro Wrestling should be presented, have
some fun along the way and generally do their bit for the
sisterhood. This show comes from more or less a year ago. Do no
adjust your youtube set there is no commentary, what you see is
what you get, and having had to listen to Tenay and Taz last
week I wish TNA would follow suit some times. This is convention
breaking stuff, and is a ton of fun so enjoy.
Mio Shirai & HAYATA vs Onryo & Shinobu
After a nice welcome by our hosts we can move on. As Io is
pretty busy in Stardom these days its just one of the Shirai
sisters on this card and she opens up proceedings teaming with
some of the boys from DDT. HAYATA and Mio take on the former
dark spirit of FMW Shniobu (to be honest I thought he had
retired years ago) and young Onryo. When you have some form of
crazy wrestling project you have dreamed up, you need to call
the boys at DDT. They wrestled in an apartment complex once. The
came up with the Iron Man Openweight Championship, a hardcore
style title that is defended under 24/7 rules that Kana has won
numerous times. So have invisible wrestlers. Their roster has
been filled with guys who are incredibly talented flyers and mat
workers who perhaps where not considered big enough even for the
Junior Heavyweight divisions in the big three of NOAH, NJPW and
AJPW. This match is obviously going to be played for laughs,
with Shinobu involved how could it not? Shirai gives it the
shrieking girl thing, which is kinda annoying but its all fun
and games for a very entertaining match. Which is the kind of
the point of this card, a well placed opener with some great
       wrestling.
Kana & Kama. vs Sakura Hirota & Mame Endo
For something purely comical we move on next to this match which
features a couple of the DDT boys in drag, along side the boss
for the evening Kana who obviously doesn't mind being
impersonated by a guy and Sakura Hirota Pro Wrestling Wave's
stand out flyer and generally adaptable small person alongside
Mame Endo. Starting off as a um straight? Wrestling match, it
boils down to comedy soon enough with analysis from colour
commentator Leon of JWP, Wave and Stardom. Sakura Hirota is a
wrestling comedy genius. A freelancer who has done well to keep
her career going with such a one trick pony attitude, but hey
she gives it her all. They parody some old school All Japan
psychology, jump 'em from the bell and give 'em hell. Only to
get caught out and the whole thing descends into farce not long
after. Leon breaks things up and starts to give a porn inspired
aerobics class which is entertaining in itself before the match
continues. Well worth a watch for the madness that happens
before your very eyes. The usually straight laced and dark stiff
machine Kana laying on the comedy is of course something way
different and she can't help doing it with a glint in her eye.
       Tomoka Nakagawa vs Isami Kodaka
I have been very impressed with Nakagawa's work rate in Oz
Academy. Her tag team with Hiroyo Matsumoto have been great
champions, she has an incredible skill set and resiliency. She
is no stranger to world travel either having held the Shimmer
tag team titles once with Daizee Haze and currently holds them
with Kellie Skater. Isami Kodaka has had a varied career in BJW
where he picked up the name “Death Match Samurai" and in DDT
where he was part of the team that came to the 2009 King of
Trios in Chikara where I first saw him. He was clearly a stand
out worker on that team and he is exceptional here, as is
Nakagawa. This is a wonderful inter gender wrestling match,
proving that when you book them correctly they don't have to be
comedy spotfests, they can be something far more substantial.
They tell a great story and go very hard indeed. Kodaka does not
let up on Nakagawa and it brings a level of believability to the
match, which after all that comedy has to come as a dark relief.

       Tigers Mask vs Miyako Matsumoto
Osaka's Tigers Mask, not to be confused with Tiger Mask, Osaka
has a baseball team called The Tigers you see and, well Osaka
Pro where sensible enough to cash in on the confusion. Tigers is
though an awesome wrestler in his own right, and has had a
storied career on the Japanese indie scene. Miyako Matsumoto
made a name for herself as a bit of a comedy wrestler in her
younger days for the Ice Ribbon promotion. Upon occasion she
would stop in the middle of her matches to have a dance,
intentionally botch spots and generally make herself look goofy.
She also had a penchant for over the top hyperbole, once
declaring herself the Ace of professional wrestling. She
demanded an Icex60 title shot (the top belt in Ice Ribbon),
unsurprisingly she lost. However as her character developed, a
lot of comedy acts in Ice Ribbon sharpen up as they go up the
card, she became a bit of a star player winning every singles
title available in a very short period of time. She occasionally
goes back to her comedy persona for matches such as this one.
Something very different from the previous inter gender singles
match but a fun Wily Coyote of a match.
Kana & Mio Shirai vs Ayako Hamada & Arisa Nakajima
Of course you have to have a big finish. Arisa Nakajima was the
woman Kana took the Openwight title from last year. Ayoko Hamada
is well fucking Ayoko Hamada, Half Mexican, Half Japanese, all
bad ass. They team up to face The Triple Tails themselves and
honestly you are looking four of the finest workers in all of
Joshi right now. This match is breathtakingly good. Kana goes
back to her stiff kicks and submission persona that has made her
name. Mio loses the heel gimick to go back to being a pure
wrestler for the evening and Nakajima and Hamada are just
stunning in this match. On an earlier card Kana had tagged with
Nakajima against Meiko Satomura and Hamada which was equally as
good, if not a tad better, and its clear that the chemistry the
two hold could make for a long running feud in Oz Academy should
they shed themselves of their current arrangements. This match
makes the card, and while I wouldn't watch this whole thing
every week, I would recommend it for some light viewing before
watching something serious. There is a promotion that says
Wrestling is Fun, this card brings that philosophy to Japan. It
should be fun, but we all know you sometimes need some
seriousness to make you appreciate a laugh, and the best bit?
You can make up your own commentary.
       Enjoy the show.
