Sheriff Lonestar's PPV of the Week; The Best of Times
By: SheriffLonestar Date: December 7, 2013, 2:52 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Here at PPV we have visited ECW a few times in the past, at its
birth, at its rebirth but the time has come to celebrate the
middle. I have chosen one of my favourite ECW PPV's that has
been in my disc library for many year and is well worn, because
it is so perfectly put together. It celebrates perhaps ECW's
most perfect era, the balance was right between home grown
talent, international stars, pure wrestling, brawling and story
telling. It also had a few surprises along the way.
The show opens in the Hara Arena in Dayton Ohio (formerly a WCW
hunting ground, Paulie learnt a lot in Atlanta) in front of 4000
rabid fans. It also showed how far they had come from the Bingo
Hall. The opening contest between Justin Credible and Jerry Lynn
was exactly what you would expect from two ring veterans and
followed the tenants of the opening match to the letter, leave
them wanting more. Lynn and Credible where perfect together, not
as jaw droppingly good as RVD and Jerry Lynn but still
excellent. Credible's then entourage of Chastity, Nicole Bass
and Jason adding to proceedings in the land of heeldom. Chris
Candido and Lance Storm then proceed to up the ante just
slightly, this was a blow off match on their feud, excellently
explained by video package, that made Candido a mid card face
but an upper card heel, and showed how complex the story telling
could get in ECW. This was before The Impact Players, but just
after Candido and Storm's tag title run. Candido had been on
fire since returning to the indie ranks not long before Storm
made his ECW debut, the addition of Tammy Sytch (Sunny to you
folks) added a much needed spurt of intrigue into the match, and
showed how much sway Sunny had in the WWE. She only had to say a
word and she could go and work for another company on an off
night on a PPV no less.
Next is a serious feud of epic proportions that in ECW was only
just getting started but had been on going for years in FMW.
Masato Tanaka and Mike Awesome. Awesome is perhaps the most
underrated big man ever in pro wrestling, as agile as junior
heavyweight and as big as The Undertaker. Tanaka was, and to be
fair, still is double tough and shows incredible poise in the
ring. Considering what they had done to each other in Japan they
only had to go half as far in ECW and the fans would be
impressed. Neither being ones for half measures they gave it
their all, and it shows. Next up is a high spot classic with
four guys who really developed the genre to respectable levels,
and who some have idolised a little to much down the years. Rob
Van Dam and Sabu (with Bill Alfonso) put their ECW World Tag
Team Titles on the line against FMW's Hayabusa and Jinsei
Shinzaki. Shinzaki was fresh off of a run in the WWF as Hakushi
was well known to the ECW faithful but Hayabusa was a tape
traders dream back in the day and was well know to. This was not
a classic match of psychology, with four aerial guys trying to
“get their shit in” as Stone Cold would say it never was going
to be, but as a career highlight reel all four could do worse.
It was a match in some senses that was meaningless from a story
telling point of view, which meant all four could get on an
enjoy themselves, and frankly they looked like they where having
       the time of their lives.
Taz, remember him, sawn off monster? Yeah that guy. Here he
defends his unofficial FTW World's Heavyweight Title against the
man who pinned him for his TV Title a few months before Bam Bam
Bigelow. If you look at these two wrestlers on paper you would
think that a competitive match was impossible. Taz is just too
short, but such was his aura at the time, built up to be an
unstoppable wrestling machine, Bam Bam came over as the
underdog. Their TV title bout in New Jersey had people buzzing
for years, and Taz has listed it as one of his all time
favourites. This one while not quite as good, with not REAL
title on the line was still and excellent bookend to that match.
The pinfalls count anywhere stipulation bringing in the
opportunity to turn it up another notch as well. Then on to the
main event. Tommy Dreamer, The Sandman and Spike Dudley against
The Dudley Boyz. That this match only went for fourteen minutes
is incredible because the Dudley's intro took at least ten. Then
in the height of their heel pomp, they would enter with no music
and late the hatred seep through the crowd. Anyone who has
wondered at Bully Ray's heat getting capabilities the last year
in his role as the leader of Aces and 8s, he learned it and
first put it into practice in a much more liberal environment.
Where bad language was not just tolerated it was encouraged. The
match itself was a bit of a mess, but well liked by anyone who
appreciates an entertaining brawl, and these six had many in the
       time they where married together.
Overall this card shows what ECW was capable of, and really begs
the question why didn't the grow further. I have talked a lot
about that in other places so I won't repeat myself. However,
from an all round stand point this card was an epic, and well
       worth your time.
       Enjoy the show;

       I covered that particular debacle here;

You are right though, it was a good idea badly executed, but it
looked so cool for one night.
