The Five; Referees

A new occasional series where I will put up five things for
discussion. This is a not a best of list, its just five related
things and is no way borrowed/stolen/plagiarized from The
Guardian's Joy of Six Blog which is awesome;

Ah the ref. The person in stripes, or golf shirt, or bow tie,
depending on the promotion and time. The person who receives the
most ire when it comes to the fans, and in some cases the most
respect. today we highlight five different referees from around
the world.
1. Nikkan Lee
Nikkan Lee is the senior official of Big Japan Pro Wrestling,
the blood and guts group from predictably enough Japan. She is
also very female. When you see Big Japan, which has some of the
most deathly death matches ever, there is a weird balance to it
brought by the graceful, and usually heavily gloved South
Korean. In an alpha male world, Lee has a surprising amount of
respect, she is never intimidated or even touched by the Big
Japan talent her job is to count three, there really aren't many
other rules in Big Japan. Her pre match routine of crossing
herself and saying a prayer matches up with Big Japan's scary
aesthetic as you can see for yourself in the match below. She
has performed at a high level for 17 years now and is the most
high profile female ref in Japan. Arguably the world as no one
else (with the exceptions of Taryn Tyrell and ODB who am damn
skippy won't be refffing a razor board match anytime soon) has
manged to make the simple job of reffing female friendly.

2. Tommy Young
Speaking of well respected referees Tommy Young the NWA senior
official from the Mid Atlantic region. He refereed more world
title matches than anyone else and became. He became an icon and
his joshing with Ric Flair became one of the key elements of the
early success of WCW. Here he explains his career in a long
shoot interview and well worth a listen as to what the referees
job is all about;

3. Sachiko Ito
Most ref's work for one company, with the exception The Hebner
Clan who we shall leave out of this conversation, but Sachiko
Ito is the go to woman when it comes to reffing Joshi in Japan.
Oz Academy, Ice Ribbon and JWP all utilize her talents. Getting
her start in the iconic era of All Japan Women, Ito has been a
mainstay ever since and with so many companies now she is in hot
demand. Here she refs her some Pro Wrestling Wave using her
signature style of getting out of the way and letting people get
on with it. Which is what you really want in a referee;

4. Bryce Remsburg
The northern indies go to guy, senior official for Chikara and
Shimmer, and a damn entertaining guy as showcased here;

5. Bill Alfonso
And some guys start out as referees . . . Bill Alfonso was a
referee in WWE, WCW, ECW, Florida Championship Wrestling pretty
much everywhere. He caught on though as the gapped toothed
manager of champions in ECW. His personal feud with Beulah
McGuilicutty went above and beyond the call of reason and in the
one match they had they split more blood than any ECW performers
ever had (and that is saying something). Just remember he
started as a referee :).
