The Five; Hanging on the Barbwire

A new occasional series where I will put up five things for
discussion. This is a not a best of list, its just five related
things and is no way borrowed/stolen/plagiarized from The
Guardian's Joy of Six Blog which is awesome;

The first five, barb wire mayhem from around the world.
1. Sabu and Abyss take things to the mainstream
No Rope Barbwire matches have never really caught on in the US
mainstream because quite frankly they are a bit dangerous and
tend to end up with at least one person in hospital. Sometimes
you just need someone with a certain mind set. Or no common
sense. Please be standing for messers Abyss and Sabu who where
daft enough to try it on PPV;

2. Megumi Kudo versus Mayumi Ozaki
Ozaki used to be one of the worlds top five female workers back
in the early nineties but by turning heel and turning to
violence she was able to extend her career to this day by taking
drama over punishment. Megumi Kudo by this point was an old hand
at the death match having ended Combat Toyoda's career in the
first female Double Hell Death Exploding Barb Wire match. Here
she puts that experience to good use. One thing about the barb's
they are an equal opportunity skin shredder.

3. Jerry Lawler and Dutch Mantell
The King wasn't adverse to getting down and dirty back in the
day and a guarantee of popping the house at the Memphis Coliseum
was offering something special. So here we have the awesome
Dutch Mantel better known now as Zeb Colter the Southern
Heavyweight Champion defending against the home town hero. Not
as bloody as future bouts, but still hard work.

4. Steve Corino and Terry Funk
I couldn't possible do this list without Terry Funk here in MLW
with Joey Styles on commentary we have the two masters of old
school tear it down and shred some skin cells.

5. Akebono and Atsushi Ohnita
As much as I couldn't leave out Terry Funk it would be churlish
to miss out Ohnita either, the man who popularized explosions,
blood guts and wire. Here he faces the current Triple Crown
Champion Akebono who back then was seasoning his pro grappling
career in Zero-1. The Ohnita turned up with and explosives
license and you have a former Sumo Grand Champion about to do
battle with a C4 laden ring. Funny how things work our eh?

The way I look at them matches is like this... It is all about
shocking the fans , and makings everyone think that one of them
are going to die or get hurt bad .. It does the job , it brings
fans in just to see the blood and things..

Japan in the 90's which is really where this kind of thing
exploded (see Ohnita and Kudo) it really became almost cult like
in its devotion. Some people didn't believe people where
legitimate till they got a lot of scar tissue.

. Yer it was to do with 'fake' wrestling and thinking it was all
'fake' so people had to see it understand it was not 'fake' init

It is a bizzare world we live in dude. I like these matches in
some senses, in others I am glad they don't happen (relatively
speaking) anymore. There is nothing like those old FMW shows for
shear spectacle, but equally you have to stop somewhere.

That's the point when do you stop ? Because a lot of the fans
love to see it but if they keep seeing it then they are going to
want more and when do they say we can not do anything more
BLOODLY , crazy than this type of match if you get me.

People love dangerous matches that's the point I guess, it
brings in a lot of money to .

It does for some companies for sure, for some its a way of life
and as much as I defend the right of people to have the matches
they want, I am glad they are not every day occurrences.

That is what they should be. They are called gimmick matches for
a reason. Wrestle Talk TV's site had a good article on why the
TNA Title tournament shouldn't be all gimmick bouts this week.
