This is the promo who sets a light under ECW and burns their
bridge with the NWA. This promo, deserves some background. In
1994 Dennis Corluzo who was a promoter in New York got on the
board of the NWA and began petitioning the board for their
champion (then WCW's Ric Flair) to make title defenses against
competition outside of WCW. It was quite the legal coup, but WCW
was not about to let its champion go and work for anyone. The
easiest thing to do to save face was to drop out of the NWA
(Flair then became the International Heavyweight Champion and
unified it with the WCW world title later in the year). Fellow
board members New Japan Pro Wrestling also left the NWA in
Protest. Corluzo, having masterminded a coup in the NWA set
about remaking it as an Indie strong hold. He planned to work
with other promoters to develop a network around the world like
back in the old days. With NJPW and WCW gone ECW became the name
player in the organisation. There where two people ECW Corluzo
had pissed off. Paul Heyman, lead booker and Shane Douglas who
Corluzo had accused on a national radio program of no showing
dates (he hadn't by the way). With the agreement in place that
the winner of the NWA title tournament would be an ECW wrestler.
Paul made sure that Shane got to pull the biggest double cross
in ECW history and this is what happened.
