Sheriff Lonestar's PPV of the Week; Changing Faces

---------------------------------------------------------
We have looked at company direction changes before in PPV of the
week and it proves a popular subject. So moving on from last
weeks examination of sexism and bad pushes I should tell you
what happened next in ARSION. As I said the company really was
Aja Kong's creative baby, but after a business separation, Joshi
Lioness Asuka was brought in as chief booker and the companies
direction change was complete. From an all round wrestling
perspective to a more mat based realistic approach.
The one person who embodied that aesthetic was Mariko Yoshida.
She debuted for AJW in 1988. A year after the incredible Class
of '87 that included Akira Hokuto, Manami Toyota and Toshiyo
Yamada. In this company, as good as she was, she was somewhat
over shadowed. When things got really hot in AJW, around 1993,
she had failed to get out of the starting blocks because of a
neck injury that kept her out of the ring for two years. He
highest profile match came while tagging with Toyota against
Bull Nakano and Akira Hokuto at the Wrestling Peace Festival in
North Korea in front of the biggest wrestling crowd of all time.
When ARSION needed a new face, Hamada as discussed last week
hightailed it to AJW and GAEA as soon as she saw the writing on
the wall, Yoshida was well placed to take up the mantle of
leader. She had the Joshi legend background (even if not quite
as legendary as others), what was more important she had the
sense of style and a willingness to portray herself differently.
As Steve Austin will tell you a neck injury can make you
reevaluate your game. Yoshida was no different coming up with a
very realistic looking mat based style which featured a lot of
submission, stiff strikes and less time on the ropes. Not that
she wouldn't go there, but choke holds and arm bars where her
main form of attack. The result was compelling story telling.
Today's videos Air Raid Crash I & II highlight her evolution to
the main event, including her match with the aforementioned
Lioness Asuka. This video features tag matches two. Teaming with
and against AKINO in two exceptional performances.
The other matches are as stiff as they come. The only comparable
person I can think of in style is Samoa Joe, she certainly
echoes his style, or rather she being older, he echoes her. The
name of these compilations by the way; Air Raid Crash, comes
from her reverse back drop driver finisher that has been made
popular in TNA by Gail Kim and adapted by Dave Finlay as the
Celtic Cross. However Yoshida invented the move.
There is four hours of entertainment so I hope you enjoy :).
