Sheriff Lonestar's PPV of the Week; When Reality Meets Storyline

Oz Academy is a largish women's promotion in Japan. Owned and
operated by Mayumi Ozaki. One quarter of the participants in my
       “Greatest Match of All time”;

In fact looking back at that match now, seeing Ozaki as a trend
setter is kind of difficult, she was the least well known of the
four, and if you thought anyone was going to break out from JWP
it would be Dynamite Kansai, who herself has her own promotion.
However back in the nineties when GAEA was making the waves in
women's wrestling Ozaki was the key member of a heel stable
called Oz Academy. So successful was the stable, that it begat a
wrestling school and then some smaller events to give the
trainees a platform. Oz Academy flourished in the GAEA format,
which was storyline heavy for a Japanese promotion (GAEA founder
Chigusa Nagayo was a big fan of Texas wrestling and put more
story lines, partly because she liked them, and partly because
it made old rivalries fresh again).
So when GAEA folded in 2005, it was only a small step for Ozaki
to form her own company, and she had the connections to make it
work. Bringing in Aja Kong and her Jungle Jack stable, born in
All Japan Women and reborn as faces in Oz Academy. They served
as the main opponents for the heel Oz Academy crew. Ozaki's crew
has changed and been renamed down the years but the basic
principal is the same. Ozaki is taking over Oz Academy, can
Jungle Jack or anyone else stop her? Simple clear story telling
that lets the matches do the talking. The matches themselves are
of a different pace to anything else you see in Joshi. There is
the mat, shoot and aerial work that is the hallmark of other
promotions, but you also get the hardcore weapon strewn fights
of Big Japan (without the gore). They do a lot to bring on new
talents and bring a different product to the Joshi market, well
worth a look to see how veterans reinvent themselves.
