Sheriff Lonestar's PPV of the Week; Building a Climax

---------------------------------------------------------
Taking a break from searching for The Best in the World, we are
building towards this years G1 Climax tournament so I have for
your viewing perusal the 2011 edition.
Historically speaking New Japan have worked tournaments
exceptionally well, building to them into their annual programs
so as to peak in the summer. Because it's a tournament you can
have a good idea of where a wrestler is going in the company,
just because it can build a good story based on a wrestlers win
lost record. The format being round robin everyone gets to
wrestle everyone else.
The G1 Climax wasn't always the G1 Climax either. It began in
1974, along with the fledgling company, as The World League. It
built up the company owner Anotino Inoki as an unstoppable
force. He would win the first two tournaments and go on to win 8
more.
The name of the tournament changed to the MSG league between
1978 and 1982, their strong working relationship with the WWF
gave them an idea for the name change. Inoki won all but one of
these the last one being taken by Andre The Giant in 1982.
The name change to the International Wrestling Grand Prix in
1983 brought prestige and controversy. The final featured Hulk
Hogan versus the ever present Inoki who was counted out,
offering a damp squib ending to the tournament. Rumours abound
that it was a botched count to which kind of takes it away a
bit. However this was one of Hogan's first major victories on
his way to world dominance and made him a star in Japan
virtually over night.
Antonio Inoki went on to win all the others (except for 1985
when that pesky Andre picked up another) Before the the next
name change to the simple World Cup Tournament which was won by
Big Van Vader (on his way to a monumental monster push) in 1989.
With Inoki safely pushed into retirement and therefore out of
dominance it was an opportunity to rebuild and find new stars
and so a new name was given to what had become the annual must
see New Japan event; the "G1 Climax tournament" was meant to
build names it did. Looking at the list of winners only one name
stands out as consistent the massively over heel Masa Chono.
Chono, who has gone off the boil in match quality ever since
Steve Austin dropped him on his head one night in Tokyo in the
late ninties, still has the drawing power when it comes to this
tournament and kept winning on and off till 2005. Well past his
prime but still Mr. Reliable at the gate especially when you
consider the other big draws of his era Keiji Mutoh "The Great
Muta" and Shinya Hashimoto went on to different companies and
sadly in Hashimoto's case died.
The current champ is Kazuchika Okada, the uber heel IWGP
champion, so it will be interesting to see who the new stars
will be this year. For now enjoy the 2011 tournament.
