SheriffLonestar's PPV of the week 22 06 13; The most ludicrous c
ard ever. Ever.
By: SheriffLonestar Date: June 22, 2013, 3:18 am
---------------------------------------------------------
And so back into history we dissolve. FMW, you really can't say
enough about this promotion when it comes to putting people in
ludicrous danger. The words "Healthy Working Environment"
clearly where not in their lexicon but by gum the filled
stadiums with a mix of pure wrestling, violent Joshi and the
quiet charisma of Atsushi Ohnita. This youtubeness gives a mix
of what was happening in this territory at the time which makes
it especially whatch worthy.
The opening matches shown in highlight form are listed here;
1. Highlights: Katsutoshi Niiyama, Koji Nakagawa, and Tetsuhiro
Kuroda vs. Battle Ranger, Masato Tanaka, and Gosaku Goshagawara;
Crusher Maedomari, Shark Tsuchiya, and Tsuppari Mack vs. Megumi
Kudo, Miwa Sato, and Nurse Nakamura; Ricky Fuji vs. Mach Hiyato;
Dr. Luther and Dr. Hannibal vs. Great Sasuke and Damien; Mr.
Gannosuke vs. Fumiharu Asako
We start with Combat Toyoda in her imperious phase taking on the
sadly forgotten Yukie Nabeno for the WWA Women's title. This was
really a holding place match, her main rivals having appeared
earlier on the card, and her real rival, for biggest female
draw, Manami Toyota firmly placed in AJW.
Moving on we have the incredible spotfest that is Hayabusa vs
Sabu, two of the most fearless high fliers in pro wrestling
history with the scar tissue to prove it. These guys where the
mainstays of the FMW mid card until Ohnita's retirement and
Sabu's gainful employment first by ECW and then NJPW. Well worth
a watch for the early Sabu who really was a human highlight real
at the time.
We then move on to what really you watch FMW for, Matsunaga vs
Mr. Pogo Barb wire baseball bat rules. These two could shift
tickets, but what you need to remember is they knew how to work
long before they started applying appalling tools of destruction
to each other. This is high drama from two of the best in this
style of wrestling. Moving on, and in a similar vein, we next
have Tarzan Goto and Hisakatsu Oya attempting to bludgeon each
other with a hammer. A real one. 19 years before Aces and 8's
rubber mallet Thursdays.
Then the real lunacy begins; Atsushi Onita vs. Masaji Aoyagi in
a Electrified Explosive Barbed Wire Barricade Double Death
Match. Remember this was a house show, nothing that special, but
that was the FMW way find a guy who could draw against Ohnita,
put in some mindless stipulations and watch everyone turn up.
The matches aren't as lively as you would expect, because
obviously one big bump and something goes bang, but it is kind
of mesmeric to watch them pace out their moves and build the
tension.
We are then back to more of the same, the girls give it plenty
in the six man tag. A different kind of brutality that starts
the Big Titan/Mike Awesome tag team/feud/tag team, they where on
an off for a while. Watching big Mike now really makes me miss
him, it was so sad that he took his own life, though I don't
agree with his business practices at times, he was an excellent
worker, pulling off moves guys half his size couldn't do.
Back to a straight wrestling match with Tarzan Goto and
Hisakatsu Oya vs. Mitsuhiro Matsunaga and Yukihiro Kanemura,
well as straight as FMW ever played it. Before the ropes come
down and the barb wire goes up. Atsushi Onita vs. Mr. Pogo, No
Rope Barbed Wire Double Barricade Death Match, again this is a
HOUSE SHOW. Mr. Pogo was getting to be a big draw and it wasn't
long before he was hopping the fence to join Cactus Jack and
Tarzan Goto in the IWA. Ohnita though was his ideal opponent,
they didn't need actual skill, just a lack of self preservation
and a knowing grimace from Ohnita.
Finally we head off to the swimming pool arena for Tarzan Goto
and Hisakatsu Oya vs. Mitsuhiro Matsunaga and Yukihiro Kanemura,
a fairly standard match with some nice storyline developments
but its not what people came to see.
What you came to see was of course; Atsushi Onita, Katsutoshi
Niiyama, and Mr. Gannosuke vs. Mr. Pogo, Gladiator Mike Awesome,
and Hideki Hosaka, Barbed Wire Electrified Dynamite Pool Double
Hell Death Match. Anything with Double Hell Death meant this was
going to be something special. This time it wasn't Ohnita being
the draw but the actual match itself. Here are the rules; six
man elimination tag. You eliminate your opponents by throwing
them into the pool. Oh, when they hit the water a round of C4
goes off, and as it says on the tin the barb wire replacing the
ropes is electrified. As usual its a bit slow, but things pick
up towards the end. Specifically when someone hits the water,
with a boom.
What is remarkable is how popular it was at the time, and how no
one has tried it since. The barbarity is still there in CZW, IWA
Mid South and Big Japan. However no one pushed the boundaries
like FMW.
Enjoy.

Thank you sir. I may be wrong on thinking that this was the most
ludicrous stipulation match ever, because I know Matsunaga
wrestled a VERY doped up alligator at one time. However, for
human on human stupidity this about takes the biscuit.

The trouble is, and FMW is the key factor, when violence becomes
the new normal where do you go from there? It happened because
they had the personnel willing to do it who people cared about
most importantly. All those guys, heels and faces, where
massively over, Ohnita especially, but you don't care about the
outcome of any match unless you care about the workers first,
thats what made it dramatic. But once you've blown Ohnita up
four or five times, what do you do then?

violences is how to get over.

Well you either retire, which Ohnita did. Or you keep going till
no one cares, what the rest of the roster did. Ohinta came back
to, to lesser and lesser success. He is known as Mr. Liar in
Japan where if you retire your supposed to stay retired, which
is why Terry Funk lost some popularity after retiring the first
time. I do see parallels with the Rock Cena Wrestlemanias, they
where built as the ultimate match. So if you've given us
everything how can you give us more? And once you've done it
once why are you doing it again?
