/>of my weekly visit to wrestling history land I talked about
Dream Slam I, the first of two events in 1993 that celebrated
Joshi, Japanese Women's Wrestling. After Slammiversary this week
where many are calling Taryn Tyrell vs Gail Kim women's match of
the year. I thought it was relevant to head back to Dream Slam
II, the show with the greatest women's match ever on it. Though
I would say this wasn't just the greatest women's match. Quite
simply, the greatest match of all time.
This show was hosted by JWP, of the trifecta of promotions
putting this show together, the second largest group. It still
had additions from both All Japan Women and FMW bolstering the
card to another 5 hour epic. The actual show took a lot longer
this is just the matches with some linking material. The depth
of this card was just as strong as Dream Slam I, however all
eyes should be on the main event.
The Champs, Toshiyo Yamada & Manami Toyota, having disposed of
Combat Toyoda and Magumi Kudo in Dream Slam I's main event, took
the open challenge of Dynamite Kansai & Mayumi Ozaki from JWP.
Toshiyo Yamada & Manami Toyota had been feuding while still tag
team champions which led to an unfortunate haircut for Toshiyo
Yamada in a Hair vs Hair match for the IWA Women's title earlier
in the year. By now both Yamada and Toyota had been cemented as
the must see tag team in Japan, Hase and Sasake where good, but
they couldn't do what Yamada and Toyota could, which was fast
paced technical and demandingly tough matches that lasted a very
long time indeed. You are going to want to buckle up for this
one, the main event is 45 minutes long. What strikes me most is
how perfectly matched the two teams are and what influence
they've had on all of wrestling today. Kansai kicks harder than
anyone I have ever seen male or female. Yamada, who is clearly a
strong influence on Daniel Bryan, isn't far behind either, add
in Ozaki and Toyota's aerial and mat work and you are going to
have fireworks. This was the Wrestling Observer match of the
year, Dave Meltzer wanted to give it 6 our of 5, he was there.
The rest of the card a mix of toughness, comedy and aerials that
you don't see that often anymore. This card also has the era
defining passing of the torch match between Chigusa Nagayo vs.
Bull Nakano, where Nagayo approaching 26 and therefore mandatory
retirement age (for AJW at the time) wanted to go out with the
biggest bang possible. She gave her all in this match. Speaking
of giving their all, Aja Kong & Akira Hokuto vs. Shinobu Kandori
& Eagle Sawai, gave us the gutsiest performance of Akira
Hokuto's career just 9 days after being pile driven onto that
table by the former Olympic Judo Bronze Medalist Shinobu Kandori
. This match is as hard as nails, but then considering the
combatants how could it not be?
So sit down relax, and let five hours fly by. This is women's
pro wrestling at its very, very best, and no one has got near
yet. It happened 20 years ago, think about that folks and enjoy.
