Sheriff Lonestar's PPV of the Week; Starcade 1987

So I am taking a break from the timeline this week because well
I miss typed 1997 as 1987 and found this. I also feel that I
have been quite harsh on WCW in recent weeks, with good reason I
might add, so this is something to redress the balance.
This was essentially WCW before it all went wrong. They where
riding high, The 4 Horsemen where in their pomp, Sting was on
the slow build to super stardom, and this is really the start of
the Monday night wars so historically important to.
The first thing you notice is that this is still and NWA event,
not a WCW event. World Championship Wrestling had been around as
a name since the Atlanta TV show of the early eighties and the
brand extension was brought up as the NWA was phased out. Really
the title was still the NWA championship and was defended in the
territories at this point but the number of NWA affiliates was
dwindling. A case in point was the UWF Bill Watt's wonderful
promotion which was the biggest company in the south for a long
time. At this point the UWF had been sold by Watts to WCW as the
Oklahoma oil boom dried up. This card has Terry Taylor UWF TV
champ challenging Nikita Kollof for the NWA TV title in a
unification match.
For those of you who like Gimmick matches this is one for you, a
Scaffold match between the two masters of the genre The Rock 'n'
Roll Express and The Midnight Express, a thoughtful reminder of
how great and fearless Bobby Eaton was. Jamie Dundee told me
over twitter this week that Bobby is seriously ill in Hospital
so our thoughts go with him and you can watch him in his prime
here. Some of WCW's classic feuds are here to, The Road Warrios
vs The Horsemen. Dusty Rhodes trying to make Lex Luger in a cage
and of course the oddity main event of Ronnie Garvin (then NWA
champ for a very short time) and Nature Boy Ric Flair, styling
and profiling and at the height of his powers. This show was
WCW's first run on PPV and it did very well enough for them to
go on and bring in the 12 PPV's per year format that was the
staple of Pro Wrestling for years.
So this is where the Grand Daddy of them all grew up. Enjoy the
show, I have to go back to being a music promoter today so I
shall give you the long and extended reviews and analysis in
next week's card. This one is a sit back, relax and enjoy.
