How did Coventry recruit very good players (some who we would
gladly see back at the lane) to play in that league?

Coventry have been pumping money in to their club and it shows.
Our only hope is if the RFU rumours for the last couple of
seasons come true and increase the championship from 12 to 14 in
which case Roth would stay up and Cov and Darlington would come
up. Some have said they also want more northern clubs in the
championship so Cov and Darlington would tick that box.
With the English team's latest failings there may be more hope
of this happening, supposedly providing a larger feeder pool for
the English prem and ultimately the national team.
As far as I'm concerned its pie in the sky though.

The problem is that to do that would need the agreement of the
other Championship clubs and so reducing their share of the
funding pot?

A bigger championship makes sound sense for a whole series of
reasons. Sadly I can’t see it happening for next season - but we
can hope. Problem would be surviving in a 14 team championship
without serious rebuilding. I understand most players have
already gone
