In this game against France, England carried on where they left
off against South Africa. To me it was a disgrace, and if it
wasn't for Jonny May's quick feet England would have been
nilled. Furbank their new Cap at Full Back was well out of his
comfort zone, and Youngs must, surely have played in his last
International.
There was some good play from England, but for most of the game
they were bereft of ideas and seemed unable, or unwilling, to
change tactics. I don't think they had a Plan A, let alone a
Plan B. How many times were the Forwards camped on the French
line and persisted to try to bully their way over. On at least
two occasions they had clear overlaps in the Backs but were
blind to them.
If they carry on playing like this, then the only team they'll
beat is Italy.

I could see great similarities between England and what we have
seen from our team this year. Lots of endeavour but critical
mistakes at vital times. They were also undone by a defence they
couldn’t unlock. They also missed an experienced number 8.

Young’s needs to go
Pick a proper 8
Don’t blood inexperienced newcomers against strong opposition.
Don’t play lock at 6
Don’t play centre on wing
Job sorted.

Farrell had a poor game, by his standards, but to me should play
at 10. Our first choice Centre pairing rely to much on Brute
Force.
Ideally a 12 needs Good Hands, Quick Feet, a Good Eye and a
fast thinking Brain to co-ordinate these attributes. I use to
love watching Jeremy Guscott, who just seemed to 'Ghost' past
his opponent. A 12 who can get past his opponent can create,
not only an overlap, but create more space for the 13. Over
80mins Top skills will outplay Brute Force.
A 13 will be Bigger and Stronger, but should also have the same
attributes as a 12, and occasionally use his weight to burst
through. In bygone times, the 12 and 13 were primarily a link
between the 10 and the Wingers. Of course if the 12 and 13 had
a chance to run through, they took it.
The Norm today is for the 9, 10 or12 to kick the Ball (away).
What a delight it is to see the Ball leave a Line, Scrum, Ruck
or Maul and move through pairs of hands to the Winger, ideally
before his opposite number gets to him. If you watch Rugby for
long enough you will occasionally see this happen. Soon it will
be something to tell your Grandkids about, i.e. the good old
days.
There was a Back who had skills, but also used Magnificent Brute
Force, a delight to watch. He was 6' 6"" and weighed 19st and
played on the Wing. Sadly he passed away a few years ago. Will
Carling, Mike Catt and Tony Underwood probably still have
nightmares about him.
There are some very good Centres ( and other positions ) in the
Premiership, with the above attributes. Maybe it's time to go
back to the England A set up, and Blood some of them. They will
be needed for the next World Cup, as most of the current players
won't be there.

Yes it was lack lustre but maybe they are taking tme to
experiment. The no8 needs to change for a specialist and there
are good ones - Harlequins for instance.

OK Clever Cloggs, but in my post I didn't actuall mention
that he was a 12, you must have assumed that from the position
of the sentence that mentioned him.
P.S. Your right I did get it wrong, I put it down to Old Age
and my 3rd Jamesons.
He was known as the 'Prince of Centres'. In the 1996 5
Nations, he came of the bench against Ireland and Wales and
played on the Wing both times. On the 1997 Lions tour of SA,
he landed the crucial Drop Goal that clinched the Test Series.
A good Centre ------- Secure in Hand, Fleet of Foot, Strong in
the Tackle to keep the Gate shut.

One thing often overlooked is how good a Centre Will Carling
was!
I saw him coming out of the chippy at Wickersley the other week!
