       Injury Report v Moseley 2020
Good afternoon and welcome back to Clifton Lane for our second
home game of 2020. Well, 2020 has seen a bit of an upturn in our
fortunes. Performances on the pitch have started to improve AND
       so has our injury predicament.
As many of you will have seen, Dan Leake scored a typical Dan
Leake try in the game against Plymouth, catch the high ball from
a ‘kick to compete’ and race in for 40m (Leaky claims it was
further!). Sadly later in the half he pulled up lame with a
strained hamstring and had to be removed from the field. Dan
hasn’t trained since but is following our guidance with regard
to the early management of his problem and is progressing in the
       right direction.
After the team had been announced for the Cambridge game and
training had been completed last Thursday evening, One or two of
the boys were doing some ‘extras’. Unfortunately Conor Field,
who had been selected to replace the injured Dan Leake, went
over on his ankle which began to swell at a very impressive
rate. He was sent for an X-Ray immediately and fortunately no
fracture was seen. We will reassess him at training this week
before we make any predictions as to how many games he will
       miss.
Our only issue in the game on Saturday was that we had to remove
DPR from the field after suffering a knock to his head. He was
fine immediately after the game but is following the return to
play protocol and if things go well should be available for
       selection for todays game.
You may well be getting as fed up of reading about Rikki as I am
of writing about him but you may be pleased to read that he
undertook his introduction back into scrummaging last Thursday
and completed some 8v8 live scrums. I’m still unsure who had the
bigger grin after it, him or me!
Reece Ward went to see the knee specialist and is now waiting
for an MRI to confirm all our suspicions that his ACL is
       ruptured.
In terms of injuries that’s where we are as of Monday lunchtime
and whilst it can change as the week progresses we are currently
in as good a position as we have been for what feels like
       months! Let’s hope it continues!
I previously mentioned the backroom staffs’ ritual of a pork pie
on away trips. As the future Mrs Swift and I have recently moved
to Tickhill and we were travelling along the A1 to Cambridge I
negotiated a pick up in Tickhill by the team coach last
Saturday. As a penance for dragging the coach 0.4 miles further
on it’s route to Blyth Roundabout and the A1, I said I would get
another pork pie from Fenton’s. When I went to collect my order
at 9.10 on Saturday morning the very kind butcher said that a
fan had taken a copy of the programme when I mentioned their
pork pies into the shop. As a consequence he donated an extra
pork pie. When I got on the bus at the Buttercross the smell of
the warm pork pies generated such an interest amongst the staff.
This group of hardy individuals and pork pie aficionados had
consumed the two large pork pies by the time we hit the A1!
Normally they are not even touched before 10.30…….Top Marks
       again to Fenton’s!
       Enjoy the game
       David and Doc

       Injury Report v Hull 2019/20
Welcome to today’s game against our near neighbours Hull
       Ionians.
The last couple of weeks have been less busy than normal for Doc
and I in terms of new injuries to contend with…..thankfully! As
regular readers will now it’s been a busy place in the medical
department this season but it seems the rate of injury is
       slowing down at last.
Before we go on to discuss the injured players, I thought you
would like an update on the important matter of the pork pies!
As you will know the large pork pie is a feature of the backroom
staffs’ morning on away trips. Usually, at 10.30 on the motorway
the pork pie is unveiled and served to the assembled pork pie
aficionados with a warm beverage. This season, this small but
important away day ritual has featured guest pies alongside our
regular pie. Trips are now being designated as two or three pie
trips depending upon the distance being travelled.
To date we have had 5 different pies in total to sample. In the
lead up to last weeks trip a big build up had been given to the
guest pie that had been very kindly donated by an anonymous
donor. With the due reverence the pork pie ceremony deserves,
the guest pie was unveiled and inspected. Thereafter it was
divided into the requisite pieces by the senior pie cutterupper.
In fairness, this individual is not normally allowed anything
sharp, so it came as little surprise to us that he bent the
knife whilst attempting to cut up the pie.
It would be fair to say that this pie made it in to the top 5
pies we have sampled this season however it would also be fair
to say Fenton’s warm pork pie remains top of the pile of the
       guest pies!
Enough of this nonsense, on with the injuries! First of all, and
for the final time (hopefully) this season I have to say what a
great pleasure it has been to see Rikki Stout back on the pitch
following his ACL reconstruction. He has now played in our last
two games which is ahead of the schedule we had discussed.
Our other two long term injuries at this stage are Reece Ward
who has also ruptured his ACL and will be having a
reconstruction in the near future so should be available by the
start of next season and Gus Defillito who dislocated his
shoulder in training .. Gus is making great strides with his
recovery and should be back in full training in the next 10 days
       or so.
In the medium-term bracket are Conor Field (high ankle sprain),
Dan Leake (hamstring strain) and Alfie North (concussion). All
of them are progressing well and should be back in training in
       the next month.
Keifer Laxton suffered a severe ‘dead leg’ (haematoma for the
more medically minded) and had a reasonable amount of fluid
drained from his thigh to help speed up his recovery. He should
be commencing running in the next week and we expect him to be
available in the next few weeks.
Toby Williams suffered a mild knee injury in the game against
Darlington but should be back in training in the next week. Sam
Hollingsworth twisted his knee in training last week but again
we do not expect too long a lay off for Sam.
Beyond that there is little to report. Hopefully the game today
will produce a positive result in relation to the score and lack
       of injuries!
       Enjoy the game
       David and Doc

       David
You are probably to young to remember but in my opinion the best
pork pies were from Coopers pork butchers at the bottom of
       Westgate Rotherham.
       (Alas no longer there.)
When I was an apprentice one of my jobs was to go round every
lunch time to take orders then across the road to fetch hot pork
pies straight from the oven my mouths watering now thinking
       about it.

I have to agree with you, Coppers pies are definitely the best I
have had. From about a Month before Christmas, long queues
formed outside the Shop, just to put in their Pie and Meat Joint
       orders.

You are correct I am far too young to be able to remember
Coopers! However I’m sure Fozzy will be able to tell us about
them on our next away trip! However it’s probably fair to say
that one of the ‘guest pies’ earlier in the season was from
       Coopers left over stock!

       Injury report v Bishops 2020
Welcome to our game against Bishops Stortford, it’s good to be
back at Clifton Lane and hopefully the weather will be kind to
us today. Up until 8.00am last Saturday we didn’t know if we
were travelling down to Reading or not due to the effects of
Storm Jorge however the volunteers at Rams managed to get the
pitch playable and off we went! No guest pork pies were to be
reviewed however the 10.30 slot on the team coach has been
elevated to a higher plane thanks to the provision (by an
anonymous donor) of a selection of custard tarts and vanilla
slices! These were well received by the backroom staff and it is
safe to say a very positive review followed the rigorous
       sampling procedure!
In my last report I commented that hopefully it was the last
time I mentioned Rikki Stout in the injury report for this
season…….it appears I spoke too soon! Rikki has had an
unfortunate season and sadly his misfortune continues. Following
some consultations with our foot and ankle specialist, Mark
Davies over at the Claremont, Rikki had an MRI scan on his foot
and he has suffered a tear of his plantar fascia. In my 35 years
of practicing (I know, some of you will say I should be better
at it if I’ve been practicing that long!!) I’ve only ever seen
two of this type of injury before and I’m sure some of the
devoted readers of this column will recall that they both
occurred in the same player, a certain Lewis Thiede who managed
to tear one of his plantar fasciae in a pre-season friendly
against Northampton Saints some years ago. Having recovered from
this he tore the other side a few weeks later. Fortunately he
made a full recovery and continues to play in the
premiership…….another of the those players who has progressed
from Championship rugby into the premiership!
The diagram shows the underneath of the foot and illustrates
the location of the plantar fascia and a tear in the fascia
(connective tissue) near to the ‘front edge’ of the heel bone
       (calcaneus).
Initially Rikki will have a few weeks in a boot before being
reintroduced into a progressive rehabilitation programme to
allow him to return to rugby. Normally the recovery period is
6-8 weeks so keep your fingers crossed for Rikki!
During our game against Rams Ben Waddington came on as a
replacement for Tony Maka (apparently that’s how Maka is known
in the south!). He had no sooner come on to the pitch than he
had to removed as he was the recipient of a no-arms tackle and
as a consequence he now has a poorly shoulder! We placed him in
a sling having dressed him after the game and he attended A&E
for an X-Ray on our return up north. Fortunately he has not
broken his collar bone. He will be reviewed later in the week to
allow us to determine how long he is likely to be unavailable
       for.
Tom Bullough and Jamie Cooke have made good recoveries from
their recent injuries and were both involved in the squad who
       travelled to Reading.
Conor Field has done a good amount of running/rehab following
his high ankle sprain and hopefully will be available for
       selection this week.
Dan Leake is progressing well following his hamstring strain and
may be available for selection this week. If not, he will be
ready by the time our next game comes around!
I did have a minor panic last Friday night when we received the
news that the game was subject to a pitch inspection. My worry
being that the next free weekend is when 18 good and hardy souls
travel to the west of Ireland to prepare me for the impending
nuptials! I’m sure the 17 others could have managed a ‘stag do’
without a stag however my fears were rapidly allayed by TJ who
pointed out that Rams already had a fixture re-arranged for that
       weekend.
Enjoy todays game, hopefully it will be injury free and
providing I make it back from the West of Ireland unscathed I
shall report further at our next home game!
