       Threat from the Premiership
   DIR By: Winger14

       ---------------------------------------------------------
       From the Rugby Paper
We understand that Premiership Clubs wish to retain Promotion
and Relegation but are ready to play hardball with the RFU and
the Championship over their desire to expand to 13 Clubs from
       2020 / 2021 with a Promotion / Relegation Play-Off thereafter.
Premiership Rugby contributes £1,700,000 annually to the
Championship Clubs ( £147,000 each ), but with the Second-Tiers
current deal with the PRL and RFU expiring next year, that money
will be withdrawn if Championship sides insist on automatic
       promotion.
The Premiership Clubs want an option where there's Promotion and
       Relegation as long as there's a Play-Off.
A 13 team Premiership with a play-Off will keep the dream alive.
But if the Championship Clubs try to drum up something that
doesn't work for the Premiership, they're not going to continue
       the £1,7m funding.
If I run a Championship Club, I'd accept that, it's probably
the best offer they'll get. Could any of them afford to lose
       the £147,000.

It’s basically blackmail and they should be told exactly where
       to stuff it.

I agree with what you say, BUT, it's plain to see that the RFU
haven't got the ' bottle ' to take the Premiership Clubs on.
The Premiership will eventually get just what they want and if
the Championship want to take them on over automatic promotion,
then as sad has it will be, they will lose. There are players
in the Premiership who are on a yearly salary that is not much
less than the yearly budget of a entire squad at the vast
       majority of Championship Clubs.
I hope I'm wrong, but if the PLR don't get their way, I can see
London Irish being promoted and then the League will be
       Ring-Fenced.
The PLR will be signing the new £200,000,000 sponsorship deal
on offer from next season, so there will be no problem for them
       to carry another team.
Whatever happens, the Championship will have to make a tough
decision, and the consequences of getting it wrong could be
tragic for most Clubs. If they take the PLR on and lose, they
could lose Promotion, possibly for ever, and all clubs will lose
the £147,000 they currently each receive each season from the
top league. If they do lose that money, then there's more
chance of Tony Foster getting a round in, than the RFU making
       good this loss.
There used to be a Play-Off between the Bottom of the top tier
and the Top of the second tier. The first time we were promoted
to the top tier, it was through a two-leg Play-Off with Bedford.
We beat them at Home 40 - 20, and lost away 0 - 14. So we
were Promoted on a points difference of +6.
That season we Won 24 and Lost 2. 1045 pts for and 267 ags.
Off the team's in our league then, currently 2 are in the
Prem, Exeter and Worcester, 2 are in the Champ, Coventry and
Leeds, and 2 are in Nat 1, Rotherham and Mosley. The other 8
       are in the Wilderness.
I've always believed in Promotion and Relegation, and still do,
but if a play-Off is the best offer on the table, then a far
reaching decision is going to have to be made. It will be
passed by a majority vote, as most Clubs in the Championship
know that they have NO chance of ever playing in the Premiership
and the ambition is probably not there anyway.

Very well articulated winger. The step up in standard is almost
ring fencing the premier anyway. If a club frelegated hits
       massive financial
Crisis they may not yoyo. But in general that now seems to be
       the pattern.

For next season the RFU are carrying on paying the Premiership
Clubs £28m, and the Championship Clubs £6m.
       Community Rugby Budget
In a letter to clubs, seen by the Rugby Paper, the RFU have laid
out thier intention to reduce Community game spending from £38m
to under £30m for 2019 / 2020. Match official funding at
levels Three to Five will be slashed by 35 per cent, and travel
funding by a Third from £1.55m to £1.05m in the next financial
       year.
County Championship funding is being reduced by 40 per cent.
In the Premiership only Exeter made a profit, all the other
Clubs lost millions, which basically says that they are Crap at
Financial Business Management, but they keep thier full funding
from the RFU, plus around £15m each from the Company that has
just bought a 27 per cent share in Premiership Rugby. The
Championship is in total limbo, and can't make up its mind
wether it's a Professional or Semi-Professional League, and
basically is going nowhere, but they keep thier full funding
       from the RFU.
But clubs at Levels Three to Five who are run by People of good
intentions, putting in Thousands of Pounds of there own money
each season, are going to get what meagre amount of help they
get from the RFU, greatly SLASHED. It's a cruel World.
John Allanson, facilities Director at Bishops Stortford, says
---- The RFU have committed themselves to huge annual pay-ours
to the Premiership and Championship and have got into a
financial mess, so they've now nowhere to go other than the
       Community game.
We have to try and get through to the People at the top of the
RFU that thier dream of having a Championship that is closer to
the Premiership is just that, a dream. It can't happen, they
can't fund it properly and they should be downgrading the
       Championship.
The Championship should become the pinnacle of Rugby below the
Premiership and thier £6m funding should be utilised elsewhere
because 99 per cent of of Clubs cannot realistically sustain the
dream of playing in the Premiership.
I wonder what's going through the minds of our Board, with a
Third less funding on the horizon.
It's sad to contemplate this, but I can see the cost of the Pie
and Chips going up next season.

That's a big loss of funding at our level although all clubs
will be hit by it, sad situation when you look at the huge
amounts of cash ploughed in to the Premiership.
