Doncaster

Had a birthday this morning so did not have chance to go to
Cinderford. So Chris and me made the trip to Doncaster - our
nearest rugby club. Here are my thoughts.
Docaster and Scottish are two fairly ordinary championship sides
and so this could be used to benchmark National 1 and the
chances of Elthamians, or Rosslyn or Ampthill.
Pace and power of both teams was well in advance of either of
the three above. Both Chris and myself felt both teams would
have easily put 50 or more past them. There is a massive gulf.
Defence was way above with hardly any tackles (if any) missed
and ferocious collisions. You quickly forget the difference.
Size of the packs well beyond those in National 1 but more than
this it was the fitness and power.
Backs much much quicker with well worked out moves. (Jack
scored) They would leave all of the above 3 teams in their wake.
So all in all I cannot see any of the above 3 coming anywhere
near championship survival unless they can come up above either
Richmond or Hartpury next season. Tall order I think unless they
recruit significantly and well. (I am not comparing to us as
that would not be fair as we are not pushing for promotion for a
few seasons.)
Matchday experience was excellent. (£28 for both of us). Would
have been £23 (11.50 each) if I had booked in advanced. Pie and
chips, unfortunately we have fallen behind there both in quality
and quantity. I almost couldnt eat it all due to the size of the
pie portion and quantity of chips. This has not been an issue at
the lane for a long time after the portion size reductions,
quality of meat reductions and number of chips reductions (one
week I got 12 and another 13)
Downside. Cup of tea was £1.40 so no where near the quality of
the half time cuppa from the cricket club for 50p. So we have
them blown away with the value in the cricket club. Consequently
there are some roses.
Seriously if we are looking at where we are in relation to all
of this - we have a lot to do to come anywhere near meeting the
experience and value for money of today. Think we need to
consolidate for a couple of years.

Jim, having watched Donnie yesterday, Who do you think from our
current squad are better than the players You saw and would be
likely to be on Donnies radar for next season?

Looking to the future I would think Seb would be a good
replacement for Micky Hills

Seb of course. Dever maybe to develop. Centres maybe, ball. But
majority would go as development I think. I think the forwards
have a taller order. They had a big mobile pack compared to us.
Calla and Toby didn't figure. So on a bright note we may be able
to hang on to quite a few for another season. I do think whoever
goes up will really struggle without big change.

After watching the game I believe Seb would fit right in at
Flanker for Doncaster, Cooke / Abrahams could do a job in the
centre and like my dad said, Dever after a few games of getting
up to speed. Maybe a few others. We have a long way to go to get
up to champ quality however I have enjoyed this season and I
think we need to re group for a few seasons at the top end of
national 1 before making an assault on the Championship again.
The last 2 / 3 seasons were pretty soul destroying particularly
after our success with Lee Blackett. If we can build and keep a
core team for a number of seasons then we have a chance.
There were loads of ex Roth players at donny, I saw Rory Pitman
knocking about in a Donny polo shirt so along with Stedman,
Burrows, Pitman, Willie Ryan and Josh Tyrell they have some big
ball carriers in their back row to choose from.
I make it 13 ex Roth players there, maybe a couple more not
listed on their site.
If Williams, Ryan and Calla are struggling to break into the
team then I would not be disappointed if they made the short
journey back down the M18 to the promised land that is Rotherham
for next season ;D
