Poor Old Leeds

Leeds players will demand answers from Chairman David Dockray at
a meeting today ( Tuesday ) as fears over the future of the Club
as a viable Championship Club continue to grow.
The board's failure to meet contract renewal deadlines has
caused frustration and uncertainty within the squad and, with
majority shareholder Jon Wright rumoured to have withdrawn his
finantial support, matters have come to a head.
Leeds Board have not been in a position to talk with Players for
next season because they had nothing concrete to offer, leaving
them free to find opportunities elsewhere. Up to 8 players have
already signed for other Clubs. With Leeds seven in-contract
Players taking up much of next season's meagre budget, stringent
cutbacks appear inevitable.
Leeds have been up against it financially since the 10yr,
£1,000,000 a year Carnegie sponsorship deal ended. The picture
looks bleaker than ever, and a move away from Headingley looks a
real possibility as it would save the Club around £400,000 a
season which they currently pay in Rent. If things don't get
better it would almost certainly signal the end of Full-Time
professional Rugby Union in the City.

Sad to hear but not surprising, makes a mockery of the
'Yorkshire Carnegie' tag.

I think they have been boosted to be more than they are. Poor
management by them. In a city with a successful rugby league
team it was never going to work They have allianated many
grass roots rugby fans with the arrogance of calling themselves
Yorkshire

I went to their Prem survival game with my dad and Brother in
Law a few seasons back against Worcester and it was a great
atmosphere. Quite a few there from Roth, Donny etc however that
is the only time there has been any sort of atmosphere at
Headingley. There are a few smaller grounds in and around Leeds
that would be far more suitable for them at this moment in time.
I think they will pull through these struggles however the first
thing I would do is drop the 'Yorkshire' name and re brand as
'Leeds Rugby Union Football Club'. If they do remain at
Headingley I would try somehow to get the students in watching
the games. 1000's of potential paying customers in Headingley
and neighbouring Hyde Park, Burley etc. They have a huge market
to advertise too, far bigger than ours yet still don't manage to
capitalise on it.
I have lived in Leeds for the last 3 years and only been to one
game, Roth away 2 years ago.

At an highly charged meeting, Leeds players called Chairman
David Dockray to step down. They accused him and the Board of
mismanagement after they were advised to look for other Clubs
following the collapse of next season's funding. It's understood
that next season's budget will be £1.3m, around £2m less than
the figure touted at the start of this season when ther was talk
of making a push for Promotion.
With just seven players believed to be under contract for next
season, recruiting a squad worthy of the Clubs standing will be
extremely challenging under such financial constraints. There's
another meeting to be held, on of all days, April 1st.
Unless investors can be found at the eleventh hour, which seems
unlikely given the fruitless search so far, semi-professional
Rugby is a real prospect at Headingley, IF they can afford to
stay there.
In June, Directors can call back loans worth over £1,000,000.
IF that does happen, then administration would seem inevitable.
According to the latest set of accounts published by Companies
House, the Club had accumulated debts of £2.7 m by June 2017
with another £1.7 m deficit forecast for 2017 / 18.
Yesterday Leeds inflicted only the second defeat on London
Irish. Leeds gained 5pts and Irish none, so at least they are
moving away from the bottom of the League.
It's costing £45m to upgrade the whole Headingley Stadium. With
the League team really struggling this season, W 1 L 5, and
the Union team in the mire, It's to be hoped that Yorkshire
Cricket have a fantastic, money making season, or that Money
spent could be a huge burden to repay.
But looking on the bright side, Leeds Volleyball Club are well
in Profit. The only thing that's tight at that club, is the
Girls Shorts.
Don't you just LOVE that Sport.

This is just speculation and I am paraphrasing but Jamie Cooke
mentioned in his pre match video on Facebook that his intention
is to stay in the starting line up for the rest of the season
and hit the ground running next season. Maybe this means he is
going to stay on for another year ?
