Hacked off....

Over the last few weeks, I have seen regular updates from the
Titans on social media about new signings, and a little about
other goings-on at the club. With the changes at Clifton Lane,
and for the season ahead, there should be plenty to tell.
However, bugger all appears in The Advertiser.
Is that the fault of the newspaper showing little interest, or
that, as a club, we don't get on their backs to give us some
space in the paper?
I have been a Millers supporter since pre-school, so I won't
complain about their coverage, and I appreciate that the rugby
club will never compete for column inches, even though we are
now playing at level 2 and they are at level 4. But each week
you see around 7 or 8 pages of Millers news. This week, with the
new season upon them, they have 15 pages with the additional
centre-spread. For the last few weeks, there has been a lot of
repetition in the Millers stories, and this week, we even have a
half-pager about the 'upcoming' West Brom game, which, you may
already know, was played last Saturday!
What do we need to do to get news from the club out there?

It has to be a coordinated campaign; social media, youTube
channel, Linkedin etc etc. Alledgedly videos count more than
articles. I have always thought that Rugby is kept niche by a
lack of interest from the conventional media. Dinnington RUFC
always seemd to get good coverage in the local rag there, but
perhaps Dinno was always more of a rugby town than Football
(certainly when I was there). Rotherham rugby deserves more
local attention and noise but I guess we just have to keep
liking and commenting on posts etc to build some momentum. I do
think the web site needs more connection with the fan and club
posts like other rugby websites, perhaps that might help in a
more joined-up approach. Hopefully when the Champ starts, there
will be a bit more exposure.

New website on the way - please be patient as it’s a big job
especially with Club Shop etc to add to it.
Since Dave Beddows moved from Tiser, there’s no one there really
into rugby. There was a piece by Nick Westby in Yorkshire Post
this week. Can’t find the link.

Feel your pain Steve.
Not impressed with the Tizer and have asked them what their
strategy is going forward.
The following, for what it is worth is my view:
The massive disparity in coverage you are experiencing
highlights exactly why corporate buyouts of local newsrooms
provoke such fierce debate.
Letting a dedicated rugby reporter go and devoting 14 pages to
football while giving next to zero coverage to the Rotherham
Titans is a direct byproduct of a centralized "clicks and scale"
business model.
Corporate owners allocate dwindling staff resources strictly to
what their national algorithms dictate will generate maximum
programmatic digital ad revenue. In South Yorkshire, that means
heavy, automated prioritization of football (Rotherham United)
over rugby, regardless of the Titans' rich community standing or
recent achievements—such as their hard-fought promotion back
into Champ Rugby.
As it seems that local rags will no longer provide proactive
sports journalism for rugby, clubs have had to shift from
expecting coverage to actively forcing its way onto their
platforms using their own automated tools and alternative
channels, which is what they are doing. The work the club are
doing on Instagram and other platforms is great. In fact the
work the club is doing to get the Mighty Roth out there is
phenomenal and dare I say (well yes I can because it is just my
opinion) more professional than the football club, although
latterly they are trying.
Some clubs are doing a blogging service. Personally I have been
a a long advocate of extolling the brilliance of the Mighty Roth
via www.leaguerugby.co.uk but that suffers from another issue
which frankly makes it, how can I put this ? Oh yes, too bloody
slow.
Fans are the essence of any club and the whole of club has a
bond with the supporters, unlike most clubs but to expect
someone probably working remote from the action, sat in a head
office in Leeds for example, they will put any effort into the
captive market, which is football.
I always regarded the Titans as “The greatest story never told”
so I think if we are expecting a local rag, most likely with a
low workforce, and being remote with no allegiance whatsoever,
to lead the way, we will be waiting a long time.
Fortunately the Titans are proactive and should be
congratulated.

The online shop is a major step forward and I have already
utilised its services (top arrives tomorrow). This is a big step
in the right direction. I think Rotherham have such a great
ethos and buzz about them that it should be easy to grow the
fold. Hopefully, the exposure that the champ gets will garner
some interest from local papers in time. A new website, I think
is needed, although the current one has served us well. Activity
on the socials including this chat room suggests that fans want
to take part and add their 2 penneth. Whilst tempering my
expectations of results this season, I think I have never been
so pumped about the start of the season. The shop, website and
socials are a means of really staying connected with my rugby
roots whilst living afar.

Not just the 'Tizer; BBC local TV News gives lots of time to
Footy obviously, but also to Rugby League. Almost never a
mention of Union since Leeds fall from the big time.
BBC Sport website virtually never mentions any which is not
international or Prem related.

The club need to sell it to the media. Its also a sad reflection
on the bias to footy and the poor promotion of 2nd tier rugby by
the rfu. Prem prem prem is their direction.

Thanks for the update about Dave, it does say a lot.
Can the club not contact them and say that we will provide them
with all the details, so all they need to do is find space?
