Interesting Article. Always thought that to have a sustainable
business model you need a suitably sized market place and a
sutiably sized share of that market place. Rugby union is still
a niche sport, that still favours the private school pathways
(despite development leagues etc) and is probably run by people
with more interest in commerce than in Rugby. To expand the
market place rugby has to be accessible and the 6N is probably
one of very few free to air windows for rugby fans and potential
rugby fans. Where I live now the nearest N1 clubs are Plymouth,
Clifton and Dings. The nearest Prem team is Exeter and closely
followed by either Bath or Bristol. For a Prem match you are
lookig at between £25-£80 for a normal ticket and much more for
a corporate type ticket. Hospitatility at HQ is around £1200 per
head and normal ticket £90-£130. Its a little excessive for the
size of the sport (although Twickers usually sells out). I agree
with Harvey in that there has to be a meritocracy and a sense
of earning a place and also risking a place to keep the sporting
element intact. I suspect that TNT will end up with the 6N in 2
years and then it will be a closed shop. Perhaps grass roots
clubs will attract a few more to their clubs as a result, in
that respect but I sense it is a looming decline. I dont have
much opportunity to watch Rotherham, especially at Clifton lane
now, but I love following them and watching the highlights.
Managed to get to Plymouth and despite the result it was good to
watch them. However their future is now limited by this change
but hopefully the Champ can give the players what they deserve
if they finish the job this season.
