Leicester Lions report on the game
DIR By: Rucko

An honest report from Leicester Lions
Lions 25 Rotherham 41
Rotherham won the toss and elected to play against the wind, but
were the first on the scoreboard when winger James Norman went
over out wide (0-5).
The Lions responded well though, and took the lead when Cam De
Beer sliced through the Titans defence to race over. Bouchier
converted and then added a penalty shortly after for a 10-7
lead.
A second for James Norman, and a score from scrum half Simon
Broad, pushed the visitors back ahead but the Lions took a
slender lead in to the interval through a Joey Patrick score and
another Bouchier penalty just before the break (20-17).
Now playing with wind at their backs, Rotherham had all the
territory but the Lions defended their line resolutely for 15
minutes before finally conceding when Broad dived over from
close range for his second (20-24).
Once again the Lions responded straight away tand re-took the
lead through a close range try of their own when debutant prop
Bronson Mellowes burrowed over.
The Titans scrum had proved a problem for the Lions all
afternoon and a series of scrum penalties lead to two quick
scores for the visitors, firstly back row Harry Newborn went
over from close range before hooker Morgan Veness finished off a
maul try. (25-34).
The Lions looked to have secured a deserved bonus point try, and
moved to within 7 points, when Patrick crossed the line again
following some flowing attack, but this time the winger dropped
the ball as he went to put it down. To make matters worse for
the Lions a late try from Jackson Barling completed the scoring
for the Titans who have now won 5 from 5 with a maximum points.
For the Lions it was another step in the right direction and
definitely their best performance of the season. Head coach
Gareth Collins commented: ''Obviously we're frustrated at the
result, especially as if Joey puts that ball down its 30 or
32-34 and it's game on. Having said that we have to look at the
bigger picture and take the positives from this afternoon. We've
gone toe-to-toe with one of the strongest sides in the league
and actually out played them in many respects

Interesting that Lions report said Patrick dropped the ball when
trying to put the ball down for what would have been their bonus
point try (at 25-36 down) which would have made it a 4 or 6
point game going into the last few minutes.
However the Rotherham version report reads :
“Late on Lions looked to have secured a try bonus point when
winger Joey Patrick crossed the line, however, before he could
score Travis Gordon knocked the ball out of his hand”.
I watched the incident in the far corner and I saw a Roth player
attempting the tackle but it was so far away I couldn’t see it
clearly. If Travis Gordon did get back or whether it panicked
Patrick to drop the ball, this clearly was a match defining
moment so well done Travis.
A couple of minutes later we put the icing on the cake with a
quick step for Jackson Barling on the wing and a run in into the
corner. How he kept his feet in play I don’t know but it was a
sublime moment.

Travis did brilliantly to get back and knock the ball from the
wingers grip but only because the winger clearly heard a cry
from his team mates to cut in and score under the posts. Stood
behind the posts for the incident and was very surprised that
the Lions gave Travis a 'dick of the day' award for celebrating
the successful tackle back. He took it in good heart but
deserves much credit from us for his total commitment to get
back.
That said I thought Lions deserved to take a point but never
felt we in trouble despite the fluctuating score line. I think
Lions will surprise a few teams this year much to our advantage.

Thanks very much for clearing that up southergit. I do hope that
anyone who reads this post in isolation hopes I am not using
abusive language. 😂😂
