       Chris Myers to retire

       Doc is standing down from touchline duties but is going to
       remain helping out behind the scenes. For those who haven't seen
       it, this is the piece I wrote in the programme for the Preston
       game.
       And all of a sudden, it’s the last home game of the season and
       with it comes a period of reflection. Today it’s time to reflect
       on a time I have known has been coming for some time but have
       not looked forward to. After 32 years, today is the last time
       Doctor Myers, Doc to his friends, will amble along the touchline
       as play goes on. After a very long period as team Doctor, a huge
       number of games covered, an unthinkable number of miles
       travelled with the team, hundreds of players treated, a great
       number of coaches seen come and go and a lot of memories (mainly
       happy ones) my partner in crime for the last 12-13 years has
       decided to make this his last season.
       I suspect his decision has been partly prompted by a
       particularly bad dose of trench foot, the like of which was last
       seen at the Somme, we both suffered (and fortunately recovered
       from) after trudging up and down the touchline at an away game
       against Harrogate last season.
       Following his time as an Officer and Doctor in the Royal Air
       Force Chris came to Rotherham to begin his new role as a GP. A
       chance meeting led to him attending a Rotherham  Rugby Club
       game. A gentle introduction/bout of arm-twisting lead to Chris
       accepting the role of Team Doctor and his journey with the team
       began. He recollects that at the time, the only medical
       equipment at the club was a canvas stretcher of the WW2 variety
       and a bucket with a broken handle, used variously for holding
       ice cold water, a sponge and John Dudley’s bottle of rum for
       half time. Times have changed and we now have a medical facility
       as good as anywhere in the Championship and a set of equipment
       the envy of many.
       Chris retired from General Practice almost 4 years ago. As well
       as working as a GP Chris was involved professionally in a number
       of other roles including the selection and education of
       prospective GPs in Yorkshire and working in the commissioning of
       GP services more locally.
       I didn’t really know Chris prior to commencing at the Rugby
       Club. I am pleased to say that I am now delighted I do and that
       he is a great friend to have. Insightful, wise, witty and a
       pithy retort are all great traits Chris has. We socialize
       together, our wives get along well and even our dogs get on
       well!
       There are many of his witty comments I could report however I
       will mention one……my personal favourite. We were passing through
       the Blackwall Tunnel on the long and tortuous return journey
       from Old Elthamians after our last game of a difficult season
       and a particularly disappointing result. Martin Jenkinson was
       attempting to cheer us up and remove the little black cloud of
       misery hovering over the front end of the team coach where we
       staff sit. ‘Come on, we’re not being miserable all the way back,
       somebody say something positive about the season,’ said Jenks.
       After a prolonged period of silence Doc responded………’The kit has
       held up well!’ we all burst out laughing, alcohol may or may not
       have been consumed and another enjoyable bus ride in the
       presence of a great bunch of men was enjoyed!
       It’s not all bad news, Chris is going to continue helping out
       behind the scenes and keep coming to games and training but will
       watch the games from the warmth of the dugout/presumably soon
       the conservatory!
       For now, though, as it is his last home game on the touchline,
       we should all thank Chris for his service to our great Club. A
       good doctor, a great friend and a legend of the Titans
