        Ealing the next London Welsh
   DIR By: Winger14

As far has I can see, upto now, Ealing have re-signed 11 of
       this season's squad, PLUS
       Guy Armitage Wasps
       Tom Denton Gloucester
       Sam Olver Worcester
       Ben Betts Leicester
       Harry Sloan Harlequins
       Matt Beesley Northampton
       Jordan Onojaife Northampton
       Jack O'Connell Bristol
       Laurence May Pirates
       George Edgson Bedford
       Howard Packman Bedford
       Ben West Leeds
       That's 23/25 players, they've talked of having a Squad of 40.
That's going to be one he'll of a wage bill.
It's reported that they are also interested in signing Joe
Simpson and Paul Doran Jones, both Wasps.
I really would like to see another team make it to the
Premiership, but if they don't make it next season, the money
they spend trying to get there could knock their development
       back a long way.
If they do make it, then building a Squad to not only compete,
but to avoid relegation, could break them, even with a Money
Bags at the helm. If they don't make it next season, then it
will have been a waste of money, because the Premiership will
be Ringfenced for the following season.
If with Ringfencing they increase the Prem to 14 teams, they May
get up. Even with no relegation, would they, or any other
current Championship team, survive. Currently Ealing are
averaging less than 600 thro the gate for Home games. With all
the team's in and around London, would they be able to raise
their Fanbase to a level that would enable them to survive in
       the top league.
       I doubt it.

Not exactly a level playing field.

Not bad on gates of less than 700.

Ealing sign 4 more from the Premiership and 1 from Munster.
It's rumoured that Ealing are trying to sign up 600 of the best
supporters in the Championship to help boost their Home gates,
and apparently they all come from Rotherham.

Ultimately doomed to failure I’m afraid.

They have also signed USA international back row Andrew Durutulo
from Worcester who can't of been cheap. They have a real shot at
making promotion next year but if they don't or they make
promotion but get immediately relegated they could be in serious
trouble with that amount of spending as we know all too well.
Bristol spend a massive amount of money but have 10x the support
and a big financial structure behind them. Ealing look in a very
similar position to us in 2003 and Welsh not all that long ago.
I hope they manage to stay up and build on their ground and fan
base but they really should be doing that for a number of years
before i.e. Exeter Chiefs, surely as a business the Exeter model
is the one to follow ? Multiple income streams, building a solid
team with elite editions and developing local talent for the
       years to come.
I wish Ealing all the best but they need to be seriously
careful. Its a high risk game they are playing with no obvious
signs of sustainability unless their backer has unlimited funds.

Could their backer be the guy who owns Trailfinders Travel? Just
a guess based on the name. If so, he is reportedly worth about
       £200 million personally.

That's the guy 80 years plus so who knows how long that money
       will be around.
