       Ridunculiz 350z build.
By: deedilus Date: March 8, 2012, 12:38 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Here's the stupid long story of my Z, I'll keep updating
whenever something happens. Going to pretty much copy and paste
off my build thread on the Powered by Max forum for the
background of the car then copy most of the rest off of my
my350z build thread because it's better organized than my posts
in the PBM forum... but yeah, gonna copy because I have about 5
different build threads on 5 different forums and that one is
the most thorough. Get your reading glasses on... Eh, well at
least there are pictures to break it up a bit. (You're gonna
regret saying be detailed, Cagle <3)
Hello everyone! My name is Matt, and I'm going to try and keep
this post a bit short because the story of this car literally
goes on forever. I'll start from the top.
I've always been a car fan, never really did any work on them
myself though until this one. Always loved driving, and when I
started working for a Production company in San Antonio TX I
hosted a couple little car things we were tasked with doing. I
always thought drifting was cool and got to drift a couple of my
friends S13's around. But everything was all good, got to drive
a short oval track dealio for one of the videos we did.
Unfortunately our director at the time wasn't prepared and we
didn't get over half of the shots to finish the damn thing, so
we never completed it. Still have all the footage though. Dori'd
the car a bit, owner of it was just a bit livid ;)
  HTML http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/26901_109055912443661_100000177595822_215369_2783601_n.jpg
Anyway, bought the car 2 years ago from a portly man, snagged
some Rota P45 and P45R's for it and some Hotchkis springs.
Junked his cheapo sub box and gave the amp he gave me with the
       car to my friend.
  HTML http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/29909_130115990337653_100000177595822_316608_7800370_n.jpg
Snagged an exhaust, intake, changed out the clutch to an Exedy
and the Flywheel to a 18lber. Was definitely in love with the
car from this point and starting to dori dori dori around
occasionally with it when I could.
  HTML http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/34249_141077305908188_100000177595822_378791_2749285_n.jpg
At this point I was only street drifting. I would go nearly
every night though, it was like a drug. Or a great way to let
off steam and stress, whichever you choose. Then disaster
struck. Didn't really have time to do anything to the car so had
my friend at Mazda do my oil change. Few days later when I was
at a friends noticed that it was leaking oil from the oil pan
and that the drain plug was loose. Tightened it back up and went
home. Next week went to autozone and snagged a bigger oil
cooling core and rigged myself a new power steering cooler since
my old one was wrecked and looked kind of like a limp.. noodle
cake. Went to dori that night.
  HTML http://insertmatthere.com/Pictures/350z/dori.jpg
Only picture I got of any of my drifting back then, I'm always
the one behind the camera haha. Well, that very pass ended up
blowing my motor. Drain plug fell out and, well the rest is a
       bit obvious I think..
Stupidly listened to friends that convinced me to turbo a VH45
and get it fabbed into the car. My friend Chris recommended a
guy in Austin, TX named Craig. He talked big. I stupidly
listened, gave the keys, the car and some money to start over to
him so he could get to work. Little did I know this was the
start of 5-6 months from hell.

Got a bamf CF hood and some other goodies for the car while
awaiting the finish of the VH45 swap.
  HTML http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/65482_165124373503481_100000177595822_536387_2179908_n.jpg
Well, after 4 months of fake finish dates, being fed complete
bull, and him squandering my money, the car was in a state of
near disrepair. Had to borrow a friends SUV and trailer, drive
up myself and grab the car and get it back down here. It looked
like this when I got it back.
  HTML http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/150315_174873809195204_100000177595822_596909_3095954_n.jpg

He had basically taken all of the money I gave him and wasted
it. Gave my motor to one of his friends to put in a mustang or
something, bought a crappy VH45 and never even got it close to
running. Just used it as a grown-up coloring book. Thing wasn't
even mounted, just sitting on the cross member with the tranny
held up with chicken wire. The car sat at my friends house for
about 3 months, with them trying to get around to fixing it but
they never did because they got too busy. My friends hooked me
up with a shop that said they'd give me a good deal if I helped
with the work. I had never really put together anything on a car
       before this. But said yeah.
  HTML http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/164750_190119877670597_100000177595822_714929_6019875_n.jpg
We made her look pretty before her transport to the shop.

Sold the VH45 to some guy that I never heard back from, dear
god the thing was disgraceful. The guy in Austin's welds looked
like ferret diarrhea. We could break them with our hands. He had
pretty much destroyed my car. I wish I could find the pictures
of the motor from when we took it out so you guys could see his
"headers". Holy crap I don't even know how to weld and could
have done better probably. But anyway... Bought an S13 shell
from a friend to build into a drift car so I could get the Z up
and running with a VQ later on as a daily. Bought an Sr20 from
him. Queue my first time trying to rebuild a motor, with the
help of my friends and some help from the owner of the shop....
  HTML http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/72058_186184681397450_100000177595822_678893_5700582_n.jpg
A picture I snapped of my two friends that helped me after we
       finally assembled the damn thing.
  HTML http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/168971_196471657035419_100000177595822_760455_7114238_n.jpg
Numerous things went wrong during the motor build which made
this last an EXTREMELY LONG TIME. And I still didn't have a car
so we worked every day until about 2AM until we got everything
done. Got the motor and put all of the extra goodies I bought
for it into the car finally, wired everything up and....
  HTML http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/165167_196971476985437_100000177595822_763966_1000603_n.jpg
Motor was blown. Piston #3 cracked in half, Piston #2 put in
backwards, cylinder walls had been overbored and you could see
where the pistons were smacking about inside the cylinders.
       Never got refunded.
Bought another block, which was fine but all of the head bolt
holes were stripped. After putting it all together, cleaning it
and COMPLETELY rebuilding the block, got about 3/4 of the way
through re-drilling the holes anddd I kinda got over it. Plus
more shit was going down on the Z in terms of prepping to get it
rebuilt so I had to stop working on one of them, can't fund two
       projects at once..
  HTML http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/206696_218847421464509_100000177595822_946104_586284_n.jpg

Even completely redid the head. I learned a lot on these
       SR20's..
So after it sitting there for ages and stuff finally looking
up for the Z, I parted the car. After taking these pictures with
       it when I was bored..
  HTML http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/222592_222671261082125_100000177595822_979401_5599006_n.jpg

So I moved back to the Z, I had bought new EVERYTHING for it
pretty much and was thinking the guy at the shop was going to do
it, which was why I was working on the 240 myself. Turns out he
wanted me to do the work on my Z with his guidance.. Again, the
240 was my first ever time putting a car/motor together or even
working on them in general... Well, after months of work from
9-5 and rebuilding the car from 6pm - 2am, we saw that the guy
in Austin's douchebaggery knew no bounds. We were dealing with
his crackhead engineering until the first startup.
Well, here's my first ever motor build by myself. Have no
pictures of when it was just sitting or anything unfortunately:

installed an MREV2 lower plenum. SCORE!!

Moar goodies! I have an Invidia G200 exhaust but the bastard in
       Austin chopped part of it.

Engine was nearly done, was time to start cleaning her up so
she'd look proper for her first start up...

That backfire gave us RIDICULOUS problems. The electrical stuff
before the car finally running also was I listened to the
stephen guy that was telling me not to video tape it cranking
that he had checked all of the plugs and they were all fine.
After buying a new IPDM and BCM we found out the main harness
was just slightly unplugged right inside the dash. Yeaaaah.
Haha. Anyway, the we could not figure out what the backfire was.
We finally got down to thinking it as the timing.
  HTML http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/253713_235146576501260_100000177595822_1082287_6043427_n.jpg
Nope. Retimed it anyway. Turns out, Stephen didn't check the
coil order. I discovered it and fixed it though! I was so proud,
haha. I should have checked it, so it's my fault but whatever.
We got it running and Stephen helped so much it's honestly not
       even a big deal.

That weekend there was a drift event coming up. I was leaving
the next week for location in Virginia to film a movie. I was
determined to make it out there.
  HTML http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/267415_245092652173319_100000177595822_1089438_7362134_n.jpg
My good friend Ryan welding up the new open diff I bought for
it, since that guy in Austin trashed my VLSD.

Was suppose to head out at around 5AM to get there on top the
next morning. Got ditched by a friend so I had to drive over to
Ryans later on and had to take the diff out myself on Ryans
garage floor. I explain it in the video, but it's not a big
deal. I made it there, Ryan is the shit, that is all. :) Woke up
a little later, started the 4 1/2 hour drive.
  HTML http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=245200425495875
       Had an awesome time.
Also got my new steering wheel on!

[More info on the failed VH swap, someone on the PBM forums had
said he wanted to hear more about what happened. So I'll just
       leave this here]
VQ, VH, slapped the person that talked me into it and referred
me to that guy, guy threatened to sue me numerous times for
"slander" because I was just telling my story (this happened
about a year ago), I got a lawyer and went to his house to make
SURE he knew that he had no case against me and that I could sue
the crap out of him if I was smart, then bought the stuff to
rebuild the Z but thought the shop was going to do themselves so
bought a 240 to build into a drift car on the side, got scammed
out of an SR20, got another one but all of the head bolt holes
in the block were stripped, then parted the 240 and rebuilt the
       VQ and Z myself hahaa.
Did a quick little photo sesh the night after the drift event at
       Mineral Wells.

Before I left for VA to do stunts for a movie I ordered some
Powered by Max coilovers. Easy installation, things feel
AMAZING. Wrote up a quick "first impressions" review on my350z
       and on the PBM forums.
Long overdue.... Powered by MAX Pro series coilovers. One of my
cats had to check out the fat lewtz to be had.

I had left town by now, and now it was time to get nastaaaay.
Buddy dropped the car off at UpRev in Austin.

Snagged a Cobra Imola race seat with Cobra side rails, as well

       Drift spares... 6 XXR 521's 18x10 +25 for the rear. Love XXR's,
cheap and I've seen them withstand hell. Sorry, but not spending
       $2000+ on wheels. I'm a nub.

       Christmas shakedown of the car!
  HTML http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zq8POJi1VD4
Was an awesome day out and was super pleased with the car. Even
though I was running a 265/40 in the rear I was still able to
hang it out sideways; only problem was a little bit too much
grip for my taste. Had to fully floor it the entire time (felt a
       lot like a KA24 S13), after this I've gone down to a 245/40.

First, painted my cage Bahama Blue. My buddy nick got some

Alternator and power steering pump, AND starter all went out one
day and got stuck in the middle of the street. Fun day. Had to

New exhaust + dyno + moar suspension time!
Be sure to check out SPL suspension, they've taken care of me
constantly and are some GREAT guys. Did I mention they make
       badass parts too?
  HTML http://insertmatthere.com/Pictures/350z/dyno/bushings.jpg
ExoticSpeed R1-T exhaust. This thing sounds absolutely MENTAL.
Sounds completely different at idle than under low throttle, and
completely different at mid and full throttle than any of the
other types of throttle. I love it.
  HTML http://insertmatthere.com/Pictures/350z/dyno/exoticspeed.jpg
So nice not having any more stupid exhaust leaks anymore...

Not too shabby for full bolt ons + tune... Pre-tune it was at
216 with not a full dyno pull, pull stopped at around 4.5k
because it was running so lean it scared the guy tuning it.
       Thanks UpRev!
Painted some of my drift spares bahama blue as well.

And that's pretty much where the car is at right now. I'm in
California at the moment finishing up getting some information
for a website I'm making for an upcoming film, as well as to see
the first directors cut of the movie I did stunts in, I start
driving back home Friday actually... Then it's time to get the
car prepped for Round 1 of Lonestar Drift on the 17th! Can't
wait for some tandem action, got to drift my S13 that I bought
out here at Willow Springs, so I got a little of my drift fix
since I've been out here. When I get back I have to:
       1. Get my new tires mounted on my drift spares
       2. Finish painting all my drift spares blue
       3. Install my new tein inner tie rods for moar angle
       4. Install my SPL bushings
       5. Install my new ASD hydro ebrake.
       6. Install all of my stainless steel brake lines.
Lot to do, can't wait to get back!

Unfortunately I didn't get to take any legal action against the
guy who conned me. He had given me a false name and afterwards I
guess he booked it to Arizona or something, last I heard. Oh
well though, cars doing fine now!
Went to Round 1 of the Lonestar Drift series and had an absolute
blast! Was an awesome day out, went with all of my drift buddies
here in San Antonio that are OG's in the Texas event drift
scene, was a fun drive up and super fun while we were there.
Drove the car up, drifted it all day long and then drove it back
       that night. Gotta love Z's.
Stayed up until 4AM the night before drinking at the hotel and
just having a damn good time. I've learned a lot from my good
friends Tyler Greene and Charles Clark, treat events as a FUN
party, not super serious. The whole point of drifting is to have
fun, yeah it gets intense and upsetting but you have to have fun
with it. Otherwise, it's just a giant waste of money. I wish I
had a picture of how many beers were on the table before we
cleaned up haha. But here are some pics from the event!

Painted some of my drift spares for the event. These are just
some random Konig's I bought off a friend who is an assistant
manager at Discount Tire, got 4 for $200. This paint OWNS!

Car performed like a boss all day, still got a lot to practice
and do, but for the most car it's pretty damn solid. Decided to
compete after I had lunch and qualified 16th, went up against
the 1st place qualifier Fielding Shredder and after going one
more time he pulled out the victory, but had a blast nonetheless
and can't wait for the next event. I just want to tandem more,
during practice my friend Mario and I were starting to get

       Thanks man, dooo it!
Messed with the Z a bit this weekend. Didn't get everything I
wanted to get done, but knocked out a big chunk so I'm happy.
Next weekend gonna drop the subframe and the diff and replace
all of my diff/subframe bushings. Then all shall be bueno.
Anyway, on with z pictures. Haha, I saw what I did just there.
       Rad.
Friday evening first order of business, carpets out so I can
start getting sound deadening out and get ready to repaint the
cage and paint the rest of the interior white. Started by taking
out the giant stupid heavy stock passenger seat. Dear lord it's
       heavy.

Shit gets hot. That's staying in there...
  HTML http://insertmatthere.com/Pictures/350z/3.31.12weekend/floor_heat_insulation.jpg
Surprisingly there aren't as many wires runnin around under the
carpet as I thought there would be. Although I found a lot of
       trash and shit floating around.

  HTML http://insertmatthere.com/Pictures/350z/3.31.12weekend/dirtyfloor3.jpg
Vacuumed that crap up, seat back in so I can drive around until
I strip the rest for paint. Don't have a pic of the entire
center console and waterfall back in, interior looks super rad
       without the carpet.
  HTML http://insertmatthere.com/Pictures/350z/3.31.12weekend/carpetless_seat.jpg
Saturday morning put my Grids back on the front finally! I
missed these wheels sooo much, look 20x better with 20x better
fitment and they're the wheels I used to get aligned as opposed
to the ones I was using before while these were out that are an
inch less wide. Also snagged some of my spacers off of my S13
coupe and plopped them on the back for a bit better fitment back
       there.
  HTML http://insertmatthere.com/Pictures/350z/3.31.12weekend/flushness.jpg
Got to Smoke 'Em, got the car on jackstands in the front and
made a shanty town to protect us from the sun.
  HTML http://insertmatthere.com/Pictures/350z/3.31.12weekend/shantytown.jpg
Took my compression rod off for it's new SPL bushings.

Put my Tein inner tie rods on with angle spacers. Ground the
steering stops until at full lock there was a cunt hair gap
between the hub and the steering stop.

Buddy Jeremy decided to snap a picture of me looking like I just
crawled out from living in a box. Hobo status: maximum.
  HTML http://insertmatthere.com/Pictures/350z/3.31.12weekend/hobo.jpg
Started taking the front lower control arm off, found out my
driver side coilover bolt was stripped as FUCK, and not
tightened down all the way. Well, guess I pinpointed the noise
of something slamming forward under braking and acceleration.
Could move the coilover back and forth with your hand, and we
had to sawzall the bolt off. Found temp bolt, got the car back
down and drove it home that night. The fronts were toed in so
bad it was legitimately frightening. Whenever I took a turn the
wheel wouldn't start correcting itself as the car moved forward,
it would just stick that way. Over bumps and such it would
nearly kick the arse end out, every two seconds it was wanting
to twitch towards the curb, etc. Stopped at a taco truck to get
a burrito and contemplate how brown I had made my pants on the
drive home. Backfired and shot a flame like a boss when I turned
the car on, drove home. 8)
Sunday, finish the front suspension and hopefully start working
       on the rear.

Front lower control arms off. The bushings were royally screwed.

Pressed that shit out and the new ones in.

Shanty fell on my car. All is well though.

Found a legit bolt for my coilover, bolted lower control arms
       back up.

Also checked my coilovers and lowered the fronts a wee bit, as
well as made sure they are the exact same height. When I checked
on Friday they were all different. :-[
Did my front ARP extended studs as well.

Check out how beast these are compared to the stocks.

Plopped the front back down, Ryan and I realigned the front toe
using our eyeballs and an extension cord. Just wanted to get it
streetable, actually got it pretty damn close to perfect. Got
the arse end up on jackstands to poke around the back and see
what we'd have to take off to do the bushings for the diff.
Yeah, not happening tonight. Started doing the extended studs in
the rear. Got everything off, couldn't find a way to get the
extended studs through the holes. Gave up so I could get home
and sleep so I could go to work the next day, read online you
have to remove the ebrake cable and bracket then you have enough
room to plop the studs through. I'll do that sometime soon.
Car feels great! Even with the eyeballed alignment there
definitely is a major difference, feels so much tighter and sexy
now. My steering wheel is also finally centered again!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! The extra angle is also pretty rad, kicked it
sideways on the way home once and it felt great. Although it
didn't last long because I quickly remembered I had a jack
sitting in the hatch as well as a creeper when I heard both of
them smack the side with brute force.
Successful weekend nonetheless, Ryan and I mocked up where my
hydro's going to go and I'm going to start reading up on the
different ways to run the lines in Z's. Probably going to get
the hydro in the car in the next couple days, depends how busy
ryan is with seam welding his engine compartment in pinkie.
Moar updates latuh, playas. And also, I'm notoriously bad at
talking to girls and getting phone numbers. My friend has gotten
more phone numbers with my car than I have. So my goal is to get
at least one girls phone number before IFO and Round 2. I'll
       keep you guys updated.
