Okay cool. And I'm pretty sure the turbo has the internal wg. I
got both it and the manifold off a speed6 (same-ish engine). So
you know if anyone that can make a downpipe? Because that and
engine management is all I have left on the list you stated
previously.

Yeah if it's stock off of the speed3, it will be internal WG'd.
As far as a downpipe, I would try to source a speed3 one if that
will fit in there. If that won't work for oem or aftermarket,
try hitting up a shop, I'm sure they will do it.
Other small things you may to need to reconsider / route
differently are PCV, and maybe EGR and IACV.

My initial advice would be don't, but my only experience comes
from three years of living with a Speed3, a vehicle which I feel
has too many compromises with no reason to have said
compromises. At least your engine won't fall out and your turbo
shouldn't smoke.
That being said, head over to www.dfwmazdas.com or
www.mazdaspeedforums.com and look for Jason Fisher (seniorblanco
on dfwmazdas, I think the same on mazdaspeedforums). He used to
have a 2.3 hatch that he was dead set on turboing, and he had a
decent wealth of knowledge on the topic. He ended up getting a
Speed3 in the end instead of turboing the 3, but if I remember
correctly, it had more to do with issues with his 2.3 that were
to much of a headache to fix.

Luckily, I never suffered from the engine falling out or the
turbo smoking. I did bend a rod somewhere around the 50-55k
mile mark. This was due to carbon build up on the piston, which
according to the Mazda tech was a known issue, and sorta hit and
miss of diagnosing if and when it would happen. The build up is
due to a flaw with the direct injection system Mazda utilizes.
But they did have an issue where the junk motor mounts on the
'07s were breaking off and causing the motor to fall out, and
then on the 2008 and 2008.5s they had a batch of turbos where
the oil seals were failing, allowing oil to get into the turbo
causing it to smoke. Not little puffs of smoke, mind you, but
big clouds that looked like you had seafoamed the car or were
spraying for mosquitoes.
That being said, I did have one mishap involving a ratchet and
the intercooler that I would be glad to talk about off forums,
but it isn't something I talk about on public boards. Not due
to me being embarrassed or anything, but it's complicated.
I just feel in general that there are compromises made on the
Speed3 in the name of "cost" but wouldn't actually increase any
cost at all. For example, the top mount intercooler. I know
they aren't the first to do this, but considering Mazda's
history of it's sports cars over heating and blowing up
(coughrx7cough), you would think they would spend the extra, I
dunno, $100 cost on their side to make it a front mount, or at
least a side mount. Then you have the fact that it is FWD. I
get the fact that they wanted to keep the cost down on the car
when it went to market, but you could pick up a WRX at the same
time for about the same price and get AWD, and you can't tell me
that raiding the Speed6 parts bin to make it AWD would have
priced it up there with Evos and STi(I)s. There was also
something up with the transmission, or at least the shift
linkage and the way it responded to the horrible, horrible motor
mounts they used. Shifting was either vague and soft, or felt
like I was dragging the stick through gravel. Tried a couple
different tricks, but none of them worked. But seriously, the
motor mounts were junk. Go find a stock Mazdaspeed3 on a dyno,
and watch how much the motor twists under hard acceleration.
The interior was like most Japanese cars not wearing a
Lexus/Infiniti/Acura badge: materials felt cheap, but it was
nice and solid for the first 20-30k miles. How ever, after that
it turned into a complete rattle trap. The GPS was also the
worst GPS on the planet. It told me that to get to Addison from
Colleyville, I had to take I30. Ok, a bit out of the way. Oh
wait. I30 WEST BOUND. Then there was the mysterious boost leak
that could never be locked down. I finally solved that one
about two weeks before I sold the car.
On the plus side, it was nice having a back seat, the radio was
pretty good, and you could hide a refugee family in the glove
box.
Simply, I just wasn't happy with it. It was an emotional/stupid
purchase that I'm still kicking myself for. It was great for
the first few months, then it just started becoming a headache.
After three and a half years, I got fed up with it and bought
the Z. Should have held out for an M3 like I kept telling
myself, but that is another story. In defense of the Speed3, I
did buy after a summer spent driving Porsches, various
performance oriented BMWs including a race built E46 M3, a Z06,
and a few other very nice cars. If you haven't driven anything
light years better then it is a pretty good car. But after
driving much better cars, all the flaws are pretty evident.
On the other hand, to the OP, if you like your 3, more power to
you! Enjoy it, love it, have fun with it. [/hijack] Welcome
to the forum!
