       I want a toy
By: italynstylion Date: August 2, 2011, 9:32 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Some of you might remember that I finally paid off my truck in
May. I'm really stoked about not having a car payment for the
       time being.
That being said, it's been quite some time since I've owned
anything sporty with a manual transmission and I'm itching to
get myself a toy. I'm not sure when it will happen but next
spring might be a good time. That will give me time to put aside
       a decent amount of money.
Regardless, I'm looking for ideas on what to get. I'm wanting
something fun. I'd define that as something powerful and fast
that will put you back in your seat. I also want it to handle
quite well. I wont be tracking the car more than likely since
track time is retarded expensive but I still want great driving
feel and ability. I also want something that is nice to look at
too. I don't want some beater with rust all over it that looks
like it may die at any moment.
I'm not getting rid of the truck, this car will be an addition.
So considering the truck meets EVERY life need that I have this
second toy can be stupid impractical. Gas mileage isn't a
concern, 2 seater is fine, and reliability doesn't really matter
too much. Front wheel drive need not apply. I'm only looking for
RWD or AWD and the potential for large power numbers or a large
       power to weight ratio.
       What I'm Considering
3rd Generation RX7 has always been on my vehicle bucket list.
I've almost bought one multiple times. I think the best course
of action for this one would be to find a clean chassis that's
well kept but has a blown up engine. Do the LS1 conversion (I
hear it's quite easy) and have a ridiculous vehicle is pretty
       much every aspect.
The Lexus IS300 is one of my top picks as well. I owned one of
these before the truck and it was great. I always wanted to
turbocharge it but never ended up doing it because it was my
only car. The car comes with the non turbo 2jz-ge engine which I
would swap for the GTE turbo engine or just build the stock
block and run a ton of boost. It's a great all around car and
actually extremely practical in pretty much every way. It would
be a 600whp 4 door daily driver. And it would be reliable too.
There's just something appealing about it
Lotus Elise is also something I've been looking at. Used ones
aren't that expensive. The power potential isn't nearly as high
as the other two but the power to weight ratio makes it a mute
point. I'd imagine it's a blast to drive and looking at it would
put a smile on my face every time.
What else should I be looking at? Any suggestions?

when i started reading this, and u were saying what u wanted,
all i could think of was the rx7 and is300 haha and then thats
what u r thinking in getting, by what i read that u want, i
think those are the best choices there are.

There are a few concerns from what I can tell.
       IS300
Stock transmission will need to be replaced. The manual
transmission models are hard to find. The vehicle itself will
likely be more expensive but is likely to be in better
condition. The V160 or V161 transmission will be top of my list
but they are expensive and hard to find. The R154 is a 5speed
but is easier to find. Both are drop in replacements.
I've also pondered getting an automatic IS300 since I'll be
replacing the transmission anyway. The thought process on this
was that it would give me a bigger pool of vehicles to choose
from so I could likely get a nicer overall vehicle with less
miles for less money. That being said, I'll need to swap the
gauge clusters and the center consoles for the corresponding
       parts for the manual vehicle.
       RX7
It's a really old car and will likely need a lot of work unless
I buy one that's in GREAT condition. I'm thinking the vehicle
will be less money but if I get one that's well kept it could
even be MORE. The LS1 engine/transmission swap is stupid easy
and has been perfected already. That much power in a 2800lbs car
would be amazing. My guess is I'll need a repaint and some
suspension/chassis work. This could come out more expensive in
       the long run too.
       Pros of the RX7
       -Better handling
       -Sexy
-You don't see them any more
-Holy shit fast with the V8
       Pros of the IS300
       -More utility
       -Newer
       -I've owned one before
-Holy shit fast....while carrying 4 of your friends

That car really doesn't have much appeal to me. I never
       understood the hype behind it.
I want something a bit ridiculous. I can only justify buying a
second vehicle if it's so absurd it couldn't (or shouldn't) be
       my only vehicle.

Then the lotus is right for you.
The AE86 was from Initial D, basically mainstreamed drifting I
guess. Some japanese dude raced his tofu delivery car against
rx7's and skylines and that sort. Its the original tokyo drift
       kind of.

Yea. Low power but high torque. With a 4g in it and the light
weight of it you can easily break the rear end free.
The IS300 would be nice with a wide bodykit but impractical if
you ever want to drive it on the streets if you build it up.
I would shy away from the RX7. Unless I was doing a v6 or V8
       swap. That's just me.
Datson 300 with 359 swap would be Hella fun also.
But it is not up to us. So just my options and opinion

The Lotus looks like mad fun, but is the top of my price range
for sure. I think the only problems with it are the fact that
I'd always be kicking myself for not getting the Exige and they
don't have a very high power potential. I really need to go
       drive one.

I'm really not interested in breaking the rear end loose though.
In fact, I'd prefer a car that has ridiculous traction.
See I'm thinking the IS300 is likely the MOST practical out of
any of the options. Four doors, leather, trunk...it was my only
car for almost 4 years so I know it's fantastic. With 600WHP it
would be nuts. But then again as long as you stay out of boost
it would be an easy daily driver. I'd even plan to run the OEM
GTE internals. Those are good for 800WHP and I don't really need
       that much power.
I would plan on doing the V8 swap in the RX7. That's the plan. I
love the rotary for it's uniqueness but it really doesn't bring
much to the table that the LS1 can't. What V6 have you seen go
in there? I've never seen a 6 done.

A 305 rebuilt to a 327 but you will need at least a 350 turbo
trans for it or you will tear up the gears. Or even a chevy
351, 379. Might be putting out around 150 hp but tourque is
       around 250. I owned a 78 camaro with 305, after I rebuilt it to
a 327 I burned up the 305 trans and the trans shop burned up a
305 and 2 350's before we found the 350 turbo trans was the only
one that worked. 2 wrecks in that thing at below 50 mph before
I got rid of it. Second camaro was a 79 rs with 350 and a
revers 4 speed. Never got it street legal and when I did drive
it I burnt through every gear. Sorry I still hold a torch for
       the 305, 327 from chevy.

I was thinking more like a T56 transmission for the LS1. It
seems to be the popular option.
I just committed a few sins on AutoTrader and realized that
getting a decent FD might actually be MORE than an IS300. The
average price of an IS300 is actually less than an FD. :o
