Save to do wheels and suspension at the same time, as it's best
to match them.
Tint, if your car's factory tint inst very good. Saves you in
the Texas heat, saves your interior.
Clear Bra, biggest investment into preserving the resale of your
car other than good maintenance.
You can do quite a lot to the look of your car, especially the
interior, to make it unique with some sand paper and spray paint
or plasti-dip.
I haven't put an aftermarket stereo in a car since I was in high
school, so I guess I can't recommend anything there.
IMO a small speaker upgrade is much better than all the horribly
installed, giant subs I see.
On certain cars, something like an AccessPort can add quite a
bit of fun, for a very small price, and for many people this
will provide the extra oomph to hold off the mod bug for quite
awhile.
After these few things, ask yourself the following questions.
- "Do I plan on ever selling this car to try and get anything
out of it?" If your answer is "YES" STOP HERE and don't do any
more mods.
- "Is this my only car? Do I rely on it as my only way to get to
work?" If your answer is "YES" STOP HERE and don't do any more
mods.
- "Is there someone local who can fix the car when something
goes wrong that you don't have the knowledge or skills, or tools
to fix?" If your answer is "NO" STOP HERE and don't do any more
mods.
If you get past those, decide what your goal for the car is.
Starting a project with a clear idea of where you want to end up
can save you a TON of money in the end.
Once you have a goal, start to research what budget you will
need to complete that goal, take that number and multiply it by
2.
In general for whatever major mod (turbo/sc, engine build/swap,
nitrous, etc) will cost you almost double by the time you finish
with the supporting mods necessary.
For example on my M3, to do the HPF kit, I also needed to
replace my stock ignition coils, motor mounts, fan clutch, put
in a stage 2 clutch, exhaust, reinforce the rear subframe by
dropping the entire rear suspension and welding in plates on
every weak point. In order to put power to the ground you NEED a
wheel and tire upgrade. Not to mention having the car down for
the several weeks this could all take to get done. Doing a
project halfassed, and half thought out is the best way to end
up with a car that never works, blows up, or kills you.
Also keep in mind that many items that were not, have just
become wear items. Spark plugs that used to last 80,000 miles
are now replaced every 3rd oil change. Your oil changes that
used to be every 7,000 miles are now done every 3,000. Ignition
coils go, charge pipes need new clamps, your tires last half as
long... heheh. Things like checking your oil levels, topping off
coolant, keeping your air filter clean, checking hoses and
belts, and maintaining tire pressure, become jobs you do every
time you fill up, not things you do when you feel like it.

holy crap that is so much work! im so glad im not into the
modding thing, im more into what people see, the exterior,
interior, and sound system! i dont wanna spend so much money on
a car that i wont be able to drive like i should be driving it
cuz ill get pulled over or killed haha. my car still got the
stock 1988 powertrain which is that V8 302 5.0 EFI, besides that
nothing elses is stock! not the interior, not the exterior,
wheels, or sound system. well one thing that i think is
considered powertrain is the exhaust, which thats not stock
either.
